Lesson Idea Name: Life Cycle of a Frog

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd grade
Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of
different living organisms.
a. Ask questions to determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a
mammal such as a cat, dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a
frog, and an insect such as a butterfly.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1b. Students build networks and customize their learning environments in
ways that support the learning process.

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Movie (list application): iMovie

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson supports auditory and visual learners through the use of the
introductory video.

Lesson idea implementation: For this lesson, I will use the iMovie I created to introduce the life cycle of a
frog. After watching the video, I will review with the class the different stages in the life cycle of a frog, then
the students will be tasked with illustrating it. I will give the students a Green strip of paper and four white
circles. The students will glue the circles across the paper strip, then will illustrate a stage of the life cycle on
each circle. This is a great activity to follow a lesson on the life cycle of a frog because it provides students
with a visual to look back at later. This will help in remembering each of the stages.
Importance of technology: Technology is important to this lesson because the video shows the students each
stage in the life cycle of a frog with real pictures. This helps give students a visual when first introduced to the
life cycle of a frog. I feel that having a visual will allow the students to comprehend and remember better.

Inspiration (optional): For this my iMovie I used a Sid the Science Kid video I found on
discoveryeducation.com I love the video because it is from the kids point of view and is easier for the
students to connect with and understand.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Internet safety is always a concern when students are on the computer.
However, for this lesson, I will be the only one using a computer, then students will be completing their
activity using pencil and paper. This will eliminate internet safety risks.

Reflective Practice: I feel that this lesson and activity will have a great impact on student learning. The use of
the video allows students to visualize the life cycle of the frog, then having the students draw the life cycle of
the frog with solidify their understanding. This activity could be enhanced by making a 3D model of the life
cycle of a frog, but I feel that for such a simple lesson, having the students draw it is perfect.
