Organizations of Interest Worksheet

What type of organizations do you want to choose: public sector (health,

education, military, criminal justice, child welfare) or private sector? Why?

I am interested in exploring the public sector, specifically the education and child/
social welfare divisions. My personal experiences, past work history, and career have
afforded me many opportunities throughout my life, to liaison, work in, or access
services in these sectors in various capacities and for a myriad of reasons. Throughout
my life I have been very close to member of my family who lives with a mental
handicap. While growing up I didn’t understand all the services my family accessed or
understood the frustrations they experienced but knew it impacted our lives. Now
that I am directly involved with my uncle’s care I am learning of the benefits and
challenges but hope to gain more insight. When I worked in the group home setting, I
was called upon to liaison with many other professionals in the social services field
and I often wondered how the structures of those organizations functioned and
interacted…or didn’t. My present employment in the capacity of teacher in the
Learning Support Department and most recently, English Language Learners
Department Head has afforded me the opportunity to work with families of students
with mental, physical, learning challenges, and immigrant families which also requires
working with many professionals from the social services field. I am interested in how
large entities such as these organizations are structured and how each level of the
structure flow. Are their policies and structure conducive to working efficiently and
effectively with other sectors? Is there continuity between the sectors to provide “all
encompassing” services to it’s clients? Where are the challenges within each, and how
do these challenges affect service or care of clients?

What do you want to learn about these organizations?

As mentioned above, I hope to gain a greater understanding of the complexities of
these organizations. How did they come about? What were the historical
developments and evolutions of the sectors and models of structure? What are
challenges within each and how these challenges affect the flow of care or delivery of
service to their clients. Is there a way to improve problem areas? Is the structure or
model of the organization still a fit or a reality for present day consumer needs? Are
there other models that have been adopted elsewhere that prove more successful?
Although, a much broader (and perhaps too broad of a topic to incorporate) I wonder
how public and private sectors are similar/different and are the advantages of each,
areas that might be adopted by the other to better serve the clients? Perhaps through
the group work project I may gain a better understanding of public versus private and
this might help me answer or at least provoke more thought on the subject.
