section of Automotive Industry Action Group’s
(AIAG) new quality standard.
TS16949:2002 “Suppliers who design the
activity should be qualified in the skill of
Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing as
appropriate.”
Benefits of GD&T
GD&T can save considerable time, money and
resources by having clear, con-cise and consistent
communications throughout the entire product life-
cycle cycle processes, by getting every personnel
involve from product and process designs,
prototyping, production, inspector, gage and tool
make to “read from the same page”. GD&T ensures
that there is only one interpretation to any drawing
as intended by the designer.
GD&T Facilitates an efficient means to communicate
specific datum’s on a part.
It allows the use of round tolerance zones as opposed
to square or rectangular tolerance zones are given by
limit tolerancing methods for cylindrical features.
GD&T uses functional gages to determine part
acceptance, which can in many cases reduce
inspection time and reliance on highly skilled
inspectors.
GD&T develops multiple sources of supply by
providing a complete product definition with a single
dimensional interpretation.
