V SEMESTER
STEEL STRUCTURES-I
(Effective from the admitted batch 2012–13)
Ti me: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------
Instructions: Each Un it carries 12 marks.
Answer all units choosing one question from each unit.
All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only.
Figures in the right hand marg in indicate marks allotted.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------

UNIT-I
1. a) Mention different types of rolled steel sections available.
Which sections are efficient for the following structural
members? Explain why?
i) Compression member carrying only axial load
ii) Flexural member 6
b) What is limit state of serviceability? Explain. Write different
load combinations of it 6
OR
2. Two plates of 8mm thick are to be joined by a double cover butt
joint. Design the joint using bolts of 4.6 grade so as to transmit a
factored load of 200KN. Assume Fe410 grade steel. Assume
suitable data if necessary. Give the detailing 12
UNIT-II
3. Design a fillet weld to join a tension member of two ISA
90x90x8 mm to a 12 mm thick gusset plate. The factored tensile
load is 400kN. Use Fe 410 grade steel. The welding is done at
shop 12
OR
4. An ISA 125x75x8 mm is welded with flange of a column of ISHB
300 (flange width 250 mm). The bracket carries a factored load of
75 kN at a distance of 38 mm as shown in fig. Determine size of
weld. Use Fe410 grade steel 12

UNIT-III
5. A lap joint is used to connect two flat plates of size 300x10 mm
using bolts (M18) of hole diameter 20 mm as shown in figure 2.
Determine the design tensile strength of plate. Use Fe410 grade
steel 12

OR
6. Design a suitable section for a tension member to carry a factored
load of 250kN. The two angles placed back to back are desirable.
The length of the member is 2m 12
UNIT-IV
7. Design a column of 7m long which is effectively held in position
and restrained against rotation at both ends in order to carry a
factored load of 800kN 12
OR
8. Design a builtup column with two channels back to back having
an effective length of 6m and carrying a load of 1100kN. Also
design the lacings 12
UNIT-V
9. Design a laterally restrained simply supported beam of span 4m
carrying load of 20kN/m and a dead load of 15kN/m. Use Fe410
grade steel 12
OR
10. Design a laterally unrestrained beam to carry a uniformly distributed
load of 40kN/m. The beam is unsupported for a length of 3.5m and
simply placed on longitudinal beams at ends 12
