TEXTO

Anthropologists study all aspects of human development, including physical characteristics, languages and cultures
that evolve over time. Some anthropologists focus on modern indigenous populations and the effects of the outside
world on their civilizations. Paleoanthropologists (also spelled Palaeoanthropologists, also calledHuman
Paleontologists), however, choose to study prehistoric humans or human relatives called hominids.
Most paleoanthropologists spend a great deal of team conducting field research. This typically involves working at an
excavation site -- or dig -- where bones, artwork, footprints or artifacts have been discovered. Some of these sites are
in remote locations, requiring the paleoanthropologists to forgo modern comforts. Once the fossils or artifacts have
been carefully documented and photographed, the paleoanthropologist may supervise their removal and arrange
transport to a laboratory where a detailed analysis can be performed. When warranted, paleoanthropologists write
reports on their finds and submit them for publication. Some paleoanthropologists also teach classes at universities or
colleges.

Archaeologists primarily work with human artifacts — objects that have been made by humans — and
with human remains. Anthropologists work with humans — theircultures, societies, languages, and ways
of life, in addition to their bones and artifacts. Some paleontologists study the fossil record of humans
and their relatives. However, paleontology as a whole encompasses all life, from bacteria to whales.
Paleontology does not usually deal with artifacts made by humans.
However, archaeologists and paleontologists might work together. For instance, a paleontologist might
identify fossil animal bones or plant pollen associated with an archaeological site, to find out what the
people who lived there ate; or a paleontologist might be called on to analyze the climate at the time a
particular archaeological site was inhabited.

11,000 pints of beer: Museum launches appeal to save thousands of coins from
political upheaval of 4th century
By Culture24 Reporter | 25 July 2016
An appeal which needs to raise more than £44,000 in four months has been launched by
the Yorkshire Museum, aimed at saving a hoard of 1,857 Roman coins on the 1,710th
anniversary of the death of Constantius, the Roman Emperor who is depicted on them
alongside Constantine, the son he visualised as his successor in his dying wish.
Metal detectorist David Blakey discovered the largest hoard of its kind ever found in the
north of England near the East Yorkshire village of Wold Newton in 2014. Insect remains
are stuck to some of the coins, which were immediately reported and filmed by Blakey,
whose decision not to empty the hoard allowed archaeologists to excavate the vessel in
different layers.
Dating from 307 – a period of turbulence and uncertainty locally and in the Roman Empire – the hoard has “huge
potential” for understanding the motives behind its burial, according to Andrew Woods, the curator of numismatics at
the museum."This is an absolutely stunning find with a strong connection to one of the most significant periods in
York's Roman history,” he says. “No hoard of this size from this period has ever been discovered in the north of
England before. “It contains coins from the time of Constantius, who died in the city, and then the first to feature
Constantine, rising to power.“This was a pivotal moment in York’s history but also the history of the western world.“It
was also a time of great uncertainty in the empire, as different Roman powers looked to challenge Constantine's claim
as emperor.
"We hope to now save the hoard to make sure it stays in Yorkshire for the public to enjoy, but also so we can learn
more about this fascinating period as well as why it was buried and to whom it might have belonged."The hoard was
worth a legionary’s annual salary when it was buried. It would have paid a carpenter for three years or a farm labourer
for six, and was enough to buy 700 chickens, 2,000 of the finest fish or 11,000 pints of beer. Each nummi coin is
around 3cm in size. The only larger hoard ever found in the UK is the Fyfield Hoard, uncovered in 1944 and now kept
at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
“The coins illustrate several co-emperors all jockeying for ultimate power,” says Richard Abdy, the British Museum’s
Curator of Roman Coins.“The Wold Newton hoard represents an evocative illustration of the power politics at the time
York was an imperial capital of the Roman World.“York’s local team consisted of father and son Constantius I and
Constantine I the Great. Constantius was based in the city while dealing with the unruly Picts north of Hadrian’s Wall,
whereupon his death Constantine was declared emperor by the army of Britain.“AD 306 was a turning point in world
history as Constantine was to become the first Christian emperor.”

“Who benefits?” That’s the question critical sociologists such as Karl Marx, C. Wright Mills and more recentlyWilliam Domhoff have
explored. Instead of just observing the social world, critical sociologists evaluate society and work to create social change. Let’s
take a look how critical sociologists apply the “who benefits question” to contemporary immigration detention in the US.
Immigration Detention
Immigration enforcement has become a top priority in the US. When non-citizens, including legal and undocumented immigrants
(adults, families, and children) are picked up, they are placed in confinement until the US determines what will happen to them (i.e.,
deportation, asylum, etc.). Like the prison system, the US is also number one in immigration detention, detaining nearly half a
million individuals each year. In the US alone, it costs around 2 billion per year to detain immigrants and people seeking asylum.
With the military build-up during the Cold War, the ‘others’ were communists. With the prison expansion of the 1990s, the ‘others’
were criminals (often racialized and gendered as black men). With the expansion of the immigration industrial complex, the ‘others’
are ‘illegals’ (racialized as Mexicans).
Sociologists, Martinez and Slack (2013: 15) also take note of the similarities of the “mass incarceration of African Americans and
the criminalization of largely brown Mestizo and indigenous undocumented migrants from Latin America. “Juan Crow” appears to
be riding in on the tail feathers of Jim Crow.”
Immigration detention has become a profitable business trend around the world. CCA, for example, has made record revenues in
recent years and plays an active role in lobbying Congress for policies that maintain the for-profit detention industry.
Supporters of privatizing detention facilities suggest that this approach saves taxpayers money. However, opponents of
privatization argue this is a way for private corporations and local governments to profit. The private industry has also been said to
cut corners to maximize earnings. For example, numerous reports have documented poor care and human rights abuses to both
adults and children in these facilities. California has recently proposed legislation that would create restrictions for private
immigration detention centers.
Public safety is also cited as a reason to support the immigration industrial complex. However, the majority of detainees have not
been convicted of a crime; their offenses are immigration infractions, which are civil violations. An Amnesty International
report (2008: 6) explains:
The US criminal justice system provides individuals detained and charged with criminal offenses with the opportunity to challenge
their detention before a court and provides legal counsel for individuals who cannot afford to pay themselves. However, individuals
detained on the basis of civil immigration violations are not provided with such safeguards.
For more information, check out this report comparing the US criminal justice system and the US immigration justice system.
Perhaps the most important question is, who doesn’t benefit from the immigration industrial complex? I agree with Golash-Boza
(2009: 306) who explains “Marginalized groups have paid the heaviest price for the enrichment of the powerful and well connected.
This is the essence of an industrial complex.”
With that, I’ll leave you with some words from Catalina Nieto with the Detention Watch Network. She describes the human cost of
the immigration industrial complex.

VERBOS

By Danny Lewis
Since divers discovered the remains of the historic shipwreck of the Swedish
royal vessel Kronan in 1980, the ship has been a veritable treasure trove of
archaeological finds. From gold coins and pharmaceuticals to brain tissue
belonging to members of the ship’s doomed crew, underwater archaeologists
have found some stunning stuff in the shipwreck. But recently, divers announced
that they may have made their stinkiest discovery yet: a hunk of what they A tin jar containing what may be 340-year-old

"It's a pretty good guess that it's some kind of dairy product, and we think it is Museum)
cheese," Kalmar County Museum researcher Lars Einarsson tells Emma Löfgren
for The Local.
The Kronanhas sat at the bottom of the Baltic Sea off Sweden’s southeast coast since 1676, when the warship was sunk during a
battle against Denmark and the Netherlands. In the decades since the ship was rediscovered, archaeologists have uncovered
tens of thousands of 17th-century artifacts, and to this day, continue to dig up new tidbits. Einarsson and his colleagues were
diving through the wreckage earlier this month on an excavation trip when they stumbled across a black tin jar buried in clay on
the seafloor, Sarah Laskow writes for Atlas Obscura. When they brought it back to the surface, the change in pressure caused
some of its contents leak out through the lid.
“That’s when the smell hit us,” Einarsson tells MatiasRankinen for Kvällsposten. “I certainly don’t recommend tasting it. It’s a
mass of bacteria.”
Einarsson compared its scent to a mixture of yeast and a type of unpasteurized cheese called Roquefort, Jon Henley writes
for The Guardian. Although it is remarkable that the jar preserved the gooey stuff inside for so long, Einarsson says he certainly
wouldn’t consider sneaking a taste.
“It's been in the mud, so it's reasonably well preserved, but at the same time it has been at the bottom of the sea for 340
years—we're not talking Tutankhamun's burial chamber," Einarsson tells Löfgren.
Einarsson might have his misgivings about tasting this cheese, but occasionally others have been a bit braver when they come
across food findings. In 2014, an Irish chef sampled a taste of an ancient lump of “bog butter” found preserved in peat for
thousands of years, and just last year a group of polar scientists working in northern Greenland came across a still-edible cache
of military rations from an expedition 60 years earlier. Meanwhile, the cheese from the Kronan is being kept at low
temperatures to keep it from rapidly decaying while researchers study it to see what it was made from and what the 17th
century sailors aboard the ship may have eaten.
"I think it smells quite nice, because I like exotic food,” Einarsson tells Löfgren. “But I would not want to taste it."

Ejemplos: New York is bigger than Los Angeles.
2. Comparativos de inferioridad. Para formar este tipo de comparación podemos usar las conjunciones “NOT AS…AS”o “LESS…THAN”.
Ejemplos: Los Angeles is not as big as New York.
Ejemplos: Juan is a lot fasterthan Mark. (Juan corre mucho más rápido que Mark.)
I am a little taller than Beth. (Soy un poco más alta que Beth.)
GRADO SUPERLATIVO
superlativa
Ejemplos: New York is the biggest city in the United States.
cualidades no tienen forma comparativa o superlativa.

What is Anthropology?
Study of Humankind
The word anthropology itself tells the basic story. From the Greek anthropos (“human”) andlogia (“study”), it is the study of
humankind, from its beginnings millions of years ago to the present day.
Nothing human is alien to anthropology. Indeed, of the many disciplines that study our species, Homo sapiens, only
anthropology seeks to understand the whole panorama—in geographic space and evolutionary time—of human existence.
Though easy to define, anthropology is difficult to describe. Its subject matter is both exotic (e.g., star lore of the Australian
aborigines) and commonplace (anatomy of the foot). And its focus is both sweeping (the evolution of language) and microscopic
(the use-wear of obsidian tools). Anthropologists may study ancient Mayan hieroglyphics, the music of African Pygmies, and the
corporate culture of a U.S. car manufacturer.
But always, the common goal links these vastly different projects: to advance knowledge of who we are, how we came to be
that way—and where we may go in the future.
Comparative Method.
As a discipline, anthropology begins with a simple yet powerful idea: Any detail of our behavior can be understood better when
it is seen against the backdrop of the full range of human behavior. This, the comparative method, attempts to explain
similarities and differences among people holistically, in the context of humanity as a whole.
Anthropology seeks to uncover principles of behavior that apply to all human communities. To an anthropologist, diversity
itself—seen in body shapes and sizes, customs, clothing, speech, religion, and worldview—provides a frame of reference for
understanding any single aspect of life in any given community.
(…)
E VOLUTIONARY P ERSPECTIVE
As a field, anthropology brings an explicit, evolutionary approach to the study of human behavior. Each of anthropology’s four
main subfields—sociocultural, biological, archaeology, linguistic anthropology—acknowledges that Homo has a long
evolutionary history that must be studied if one is to know what it means to be a human being.
Cultural Anthropology
In North America, the discipline’s largest branch, cultural anthropology, applies the comparative method and evolutionary
perspective to human culture. Culture represents the entire database of knowledge, values, and traditional ways of viewing the
world, which have been transmitted from one generation ahead to the next—nongenetically, apart from DNA—through words,
concepts, and symbols.
Cultural anthropologists study humans through a descriptive lens called the ethnographic method, based on participant
observation in tandem with face-to-face interviews, normally conducted in the native tongue. Ethnographers compare what
they see and hear themselves with the observations and findings of studies conducted in other societies. Originally,
anthropologists pieced together a complete way of life for a culture, viewed as a whole. Today, the more likely focus is on a
narrower aspect of cultural life, such as economics, politics, religion, or art.
Cultural anthropologists seek to understand the internal logic of another society. It helps outsiders make sense of behaviors that,
like face painting or scarification, may seem bizarre or senseless. Through the comparative method, an anthropologist learns to
avoid “ethnocentrism,” the tendency to interpret strange customs on the basis of preconceptions derived from one’s own
cultural background. Moreover, this same process helps us see our own society—the color “red” again—through fresh eyes.
We can turn the principle around and see our everyday surroundings in a new light, with the same sense of wonder and
discovery anthropologists experience when studying life in a Brazilian rain-forest tribe. Though many picture cultural
anthropologists thousands of miles from home residing in thatched huts amid wicker fences, growing numbers now study U.S.
groups instead, applying anthropological perspectives to their own culture and society.
Linguistic Anthropology
One aspect of culture holds a special fascination for most anthropologists: language, hallmark of the human species. The
organization of systems of sound into language has enabled Homo sapiens to transcend the limits of individual memory. Speech
is the most efficient medium of communication since DNA for transmitting information across generations. It is upon language
that culture itself depends—and within language that humanity’s knowledge resides.
(…)
Linguistic anthropologists, representing one of the discipline’s traditional branches, look at the history, evolution, and internal
structure of human languages. They study prehistoric links between different societies, and explore the use and meaning of
verbal concepts with which humans communicate and reason. Linguistic anthropologists seek to explain the very nature of
language itself, including hidden connections among language, brain, and behavior.
Language is the hallmark of our species. It is upon language that human culture itself depends.
Linguistic anthropologists, of course, are not the only ones who study historical dimensions of culture. Anthropologists recognize
that, in seeking to understand today’s society, they should not confine attention only to present-day groups. They also need
information about what came before. But how can they trace the long-ago prehistory, reaching far back into the millennia, of
societies that left no written record?
Archaeology
Fortunately, the human record is written not only in alphabets and books, but is preserved in other kinds of material remains—
in cave paintings, pictographs, discarded stone tools, earthenware vessels, religious figurines, abandoned baskets—which is to
say, in tattered shreds and patches of ancient societies. Archaeologists interpret this often fragmentary but fascinating record to
reassemble long-ago cultures and forgotten ways of life.
Archaeologists, long interested in the classical societies of Greece, Rome, and Egypt, have extended their studies in two
directions—backward some 3 million years to the bones and stone tools of our protohuman ancestors, and forward to the
reconstruction of lifeways and communities of 19th-century America. Regarding the latter, many archaeologists work in the
growing field of cultural resource management, to help federal, state, and local governments preserve our nation’s architectural,
historical, and cultural heritage.
Biological Anthropology
But human history begins in a different place further back in time. It starts about 8 million years ago, when a population of
apelike creatures from eastern Africa turned onto a unique evolutionary road. Thus, the anthropologist’s comparative
perspective must be expanded to include more than prehistoric human societies, for behavior has primate roots as well. To fully
understand humankind we must learn more about its place in the natural habitat of living things.
Biological (or physical) anthropology looks at Homo sapiens as a genus and species, tracing their biological origins, evolutionary
development, and genetic diversity. Biological anthropologists study the biocultural prehistory of Homo to understand human
nature and, ultimately, the evolution of the brain and nervous system itself.
These, then, are the four main branches that make anthropology whole: cultural, linguistic, archaeology, and biological
anthropology. Anthropology asks a most difficult and most important question: What does it mean to be human? While the
question may never be fully answered, the study of anthropology—what the noted anthropologist Loren Eiseley has called the
“immense journey”—has attracted some of the world’s greatest thinkers, whose discoveries forever changed our understanding
of ourselves.

From http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/mummy-hair-points-to-a-low-stress-life-in-ancient-south-
Several anthropological studies show that, just like other pre-Hispanic natives, those
who inhabited the desert in northern Chile faced periods of food shortages, severe
weather conditions, crippling diseases and violence. However, a new analysis of a
stress hormone in hair samples from 19 mummies of people who lived between 500
and 1,500 years ago suggests that perhaps not all of them had as stressful an
existence as previously thought.
This interpretation “is different from what had been assumed so far,” says Hermann Niemeyer, head of the Laboratory of
Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Chile, and one of the authors of the study. Niemeyer and his
colleagues took hair samples from 19 mummies of San Pedro de Atacama, five of them from the Middle Period (400 to 1000 AD)
and the rest from the Late Intermediate Period (1000 to 1400 AD), and measured the capillary concentration of cortisol, a
hormone released in response to real or perceived threats.
Because hair grows on average one centimetre per month, the analysis functions as an indicator of the stress experienced during
the natives’ last months of life—and may be an invaluable window into the emotional life of the remote past. Although it is
impossible to rule out some degree of degradation caused by decomposition, Niemeyer says the mummies’ hair and other
organic remains are extremely well preserved because of the arid San Pedro de Atacama atmosphere. “And cortisol itself is a
fairly stable molecule,” he adds.
Researchers also measured the concentration of cortisol in the hair of 19 healthy, non-obese living residents of Santiago de
Chile, ranging from 23 to 55 years old. The results were surprising: Cortisol levels proved to be similar in modern and in
prehistoric samples. “While the environmental, technological and health conditions in ancient times could be considered
restrictive in relation to the conditions of life today, apparently they did not alter the levels of systemic stress of these
populations,” the authors wrote in Chungará, a Chilean anthropology magazine. Details of the new work were also presented in
April at the 85th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists in Atlanta.
The finding contradicts previous studies. Applying a similar methodology in 2009, a team of researchers led by Emily Webb, then
at the University of Western Ontario, found that mummies from different places in Peru presented very high stress levels. The
team attributed this to food shortages, droughts, interpersonal conflicts and other threats to life. Researchers now assume
that—despite all odds—the ancient inhabitants of the Atacama were well adapted to the conditions of the local environment,
since human occupation in the area went on for thousands of years.
But this assumption of a low-stress life for the remote Atacama people should not necessarily be extrapolated to the experience
of other pre-Hispanic natives. "The diversity of environments and cultural processes along the Andes is so heterogeneous that
we must be cautious in expanding our findings to other prehistoric societies in our continent,” warns the study’s lead author,
physical anthropologist Rocio Lopez Barrales from the University of Chile. She is currently researching at the Department of
Anthropology at Ohio State University.
The application of new techniques, such as the measurement of cortisol in mummies’ hair, "is interesting for providing
information on specific aspects,” says Lourdes Marquez Morfin, a bioarchaeologist at the National School of Anthropology and
(ENAH) in Mexico, who specializes in society and health in ancient populations and was not involved in the new research.
However, she adds that the interpretation in the Atacama study could have been more solid if it had considered a larger number
of variables and health indicators.

My sister lost the keys.
