This chapter has covered the detailed profile of sample units containing name,
year of establishment, constitution, gross turnover, product produced,
esteemed clients, computerization of working, initial cost of project and capital
employed at present, which helps to understand status of the sample units
considered for the present study.
3.1 Introduction

increasing cane production pushed up the demand for agricultural machinery and oil
engines. The skilled labour then began to make spare parts for imported machinery
and subsequently, simple agricultural implements, oil engines soon became the
mainstay of industrial activity in Kolhapur. As industrial activity grew, Shivaji
Udyamnagar was established and given land for promoting industrial activity. At this
time, Kolhapur Engineering Association was allotted land and the industrial base of
Kolhapur came up through a co-operative effort. The growth of the local agricultural
machinery and oil engines industry created the need for locally available castings.
This led to the emergence of the foundry industry in Kolhapur. The post independence
period saw continued growth of the oil engine industry which required cast
components and several foundries started after 1960. Today, Kolhapur is an
established foundry cluster, renowned for manufacturing quality castings in India. In
fact, some large corporate including Reliance Industries has invested in foundry
industries of Kolhapur.1
In this present phase the researcher has covered the different types of
company’s i.e. sole proprietorship, partnership firm, PVT. Ltd. firms for the study.
While presenting the company profile the researcher has considered the variables like
name of the firm, address, year of establishment, constitution, gross turnover, net
profit, accounting system, audit conducted, initial cost of the project and capital
employed at present. It was found that it is very lengthy to express these variables for
each and every sample units in descriptive form. For that purpose the researcher has
presented the profile of the sample units in the tabular form for easy reference by
using less space. Also the researcher has covered special important types of
productions, varieties of production, market area and special features of the firm
below the table in short. This is done by the researcher to maintain the uniformity in
the presentation of company profile. In the present study the researcher has covered
the four industrial estates for the study; these industrial estates are Shivaji
Udyamnagar, Shiroli MIDC, Gokul Shirgaon MIDC and Kagal Five Star MIDC.
Among these four industrial estates researcher has selected 15 manufacturing units
from one industrial estate, here the brief profile of all 60 sample manufacturing units
are given below.

World War outbreak in 1939 and disturbed the routine supply of the steel crusher
hence skilled persons then began to make first spare parts for imported machinery. As
the production of sugar cane goes on increases the demand for oil engines came in
light. With this industrial activity Shivaji Udyamnagar was established in the year
1947 and given land for promoting industrial activity. The fourth and fifth decades of
the 20th century saw several progressive entrepreneurs including S. Yashwant, Y.P.
Powar, Mirasaheb Hudli, Gadre, Samani and C. Menon emerge and ensure rapid
growth of the Kolhapur engineering and foundry industry. In Shivaji Udyamnagar as
the foundry business was grown up there is need occurs for machine and fabrication
industries. Now the machine and fabrication industries were also developed in last
three decade. Now Shivaji Udyamnagar is come in the centre of the city and
surrounding area is blocked by residential people and there is no scope of expansion
for any business.
3.2.1 : M. G. Industries
The firm is registered under Small Scale Industries (SSI). It has well equipped
workshop with skilled workers and engineers for complete the work as per
requirement. It has deep experience of many years in offering gun metal, phosphorus
bronze castings, leaded bronze castings, C. I. castings, top roller bearings, bottom half
bearings, mill bearings, gun metal bushes and wear plates etc. These are manufactured
using quality raw material such as Copper Ingot and Scrap and Gun Metal Scrap
procured from reliable and well known vendors. Efficient marketing strategy and
quality range of Sugar & Cement Mill machines and spares helps them in catering to
the needs of clients across the country. Some of the major clients are Walchandnagar
Industries Ltd. Pune, Krupp Industries Ltd. (B/W) Pune, The KCP Ltd. Chennai, S. S.
Engineers Pune, Surendra Engineering Corporation (Export Division) Mumbai and

M.K. Iron Foundry is a manufacturer of cast iron components and
subassemblies, supplying to the engineering industries in India. The researcher has
considered work centre, age of manufacturing unit, annual turnover and financial
position, location, size of the firm and variety of product as a parameters to select a
sample unit. This foundry manufactures C. I. Castings and SG Iron Castings. It also
provides in house heat treatment. Due to the non availability of sufficient place for
machine shop the M.K. Iron Foundry cannot provide machining facility to the
products. Annual capacity of melting and molding of this unit is 400 mt. The
minimum casting size is 0.5 kg to 45 kg per piece. It produces Ruto, Fly Wheels,

Nagesh Iron Industries started a foundry with a capital of Rs. 5400/- in 1982.

During the tenure of business, the performance of IEW products gained the
customer confidence. IEW developed around 30 verities of product during this period
with its own technology and supplied most of them to repeated automobile
manufacturers as O.E. as well as replacement market. Company manufactures Spring
Type Shock Absorbers, Hydraulic Shock Absorbers, Dampers, Gas filled shock
absorbers and Gas Springs. For the quality work company got an ISO 9001-2000

3.2.12 : Kawade Iron Works
Kawade Iron Works is started in the year 1981 in the Shivaji Udyambagar,
Kolhapur. In this unit it produces the Cast Iron casting, which is used in the
Automobile sectors and General Engineering Machinery. The researcher has

capacity of this unit is molding and melting 270 Tons per year. Casting ranges from

. The annual capacity of production is 400 ton casting. The capacity of components
produces ranges from 40 gram to 3 kg. UDREJ Engineers Pvt. Ltd. produces shafts,
plates and covers of automobile and other industrial product. It provides in house heat
treatment along with fully automated machine shop containing VMC, CMC and
GPMs and vertical drilling machines.

growth of the Kolhapur industrial sector was goes on rapidly but again the problem of
availability of land comes into existent. Because Shiroli MIDC was surrounded by
many small villages and the two rivers that is Panchaganga and Warana pass in
between them. The people in these villages are not ready to spare much more land for
the industrial purpose because due to the availability of adequate facility of the water
there is large production of cash crop that is sugar cane. Simultaneously the farmers
can cultivate vegetables because the rapid growth of Kolhapur city there is heavy
demand for vegetables. Hence there is need to another place for the expansion of the
Kolhapur industries and Gokulshirgaon MIDC(GOSHIMA) came into existence.

as Castwel Metal Industries a foundry was involved in grey iron casting
manufacturing. Mr. A. C. Rathod qualified as a metallurgist had a self experience of

3.6. Conclusion
In this chapter researcher explains the profile of the sample units considered
under the present study. In the profile of the each sample unit the researcher has made
an efforts to include all information regarding that particular manufacturing unit like
name of the unit, year of establishment, nature of production, nature of ownership,
gross turnover, net profit, initial cost of the project, capital employed at present. Also
the researcher has mentioned the products produced by the unit and market where the
unit serves their product. Along with this the researcher has mentioned some
esteemed customer of the manufacturing unit. This information makes clear the exact
status of the manufacturing organization. The researcher has covered four industrial
estates with 15 samples each, with a statistical parameter and presented company
profile in tabular form with special characteristics of respective company. In the
present study the researcher has found that sample units covered having no separate
costing department even in large scale manufacturing organization. The researcher
has covered the small as well as mid size and large manufacturing organizations by
turnover mentioned in the profile of that firms. The researcher has mentioned in short
special product produced by the each sample units, also the researcher has covered the
special characteristics like export orientation, firm supplying their product to the
government like Indian Navy, and also the firms producing to serve specific business
like automobile sector or construction sector. With the help of the constitution the
researcher has classified the firm in Sole proprietorship, Partnership firm and Pvt. Ltd.
Companies and further it is explained that the firm is either foundry industry, machine
