1. PERIODICAL CHECK

1. 1 Checking Procedures

1. 1.1 Connected status check

1.1.1.1 Checking the antenna system

(1) Make sure that the antenna is normal. ,

(2) Check that the antenna—mounting insulators are free from damage, such as
cracking, and that the thimbles, the shackles, the clips, and other fixtures
do not have loose small fittings such as nuts.

1.1.1.2 Checking the mounted status

(1) Check that the antenna connector, the unit cable connectors, the controller

connector, the data terminal equipment connector, the printer connector, and
the handset connector are all mounted both correctly and securely.

(2) Check that the setscrews, the panel—mounting screws, and other small fittings
are tightened both correctly and securely. _

(3) Ensure that the grounding bolts and nuts are securely tightened and that the
grounding copper plating is free from corrosion.

1.1.1.3 Checking the display units and other hardware units


(1) Display units
1) Press the ”PWR(RX)” switch on the NCH—700 MF/HF controller panel and make
sure that the green ”PWR(RX)” switch LED lights.

2) With the above-mentioned ”PWR(RX)” switch LED remaining lit, press the ”TX”
switch on the MF/HF controller panel and check that the red ”TX” switch LED
lights.
3) With the above-mentioned ”PWR(RX)” switch LED remaining lit, make sure that
the liquid-crystal display unist of both the controller panel and the NWZ-700
data terminal equipment make a normal display and that the displayed
characters are readily legible. Refer to the relevant operating
manuals to check details of the display. .

4) Check that the characters inscribed and/or printed on various push-button


switches are correct.

5) Set the DSC WKR to its full-wave scanning status, and check that all green
LEDs of the DSC frequency selector push-button switches on the
controller panel turn on.

6) Ensure that pressing and holding down the ”DIM” push-button switch causes
the brightness level of display to repeat gradual increasing and decreasing.
(2) Alarm unit
1) Check that when the DSC WKR receives a message, an alarm buzzer will sound.

1.1.1.4 Checking the switches and other controls


(1) Check that there are no missing switches or control knobs.
(2) Check that when the push-button switches in the COMMUNICATION MODE, FREQUENCY &
FUNCTION, TRANSMITTER, and RECEIVER sections of the MF/HF controller panel are
operated, ITU channel/user channel call, communications mode setting, and
transmitting/receiving frequency setting will occur.
Also, check that respective data is correctly displayed.
(3) Make sure that various frequencies can be selected using the DSC frequency

selector push-button switches arranged vertically on the MF/HF controller panel.


(4) Ensure that after a DSC message has been received from a remote office,
pressing the ”PRESET” push-button switch in the CALLING RECEPT section turns
off the corresponding alarm buzzer.
1.1.1.5 Checking the power units

(1) Main power


1) Using the check meter provided on the JSS-720 unit, make sure that the supply
voltage stays within the specifications.
2) Press the ”PWR(RX)” switch on the MF/HF controller panel and make sure that
the green ”PWR(RX)” switch LED lights and that a display is made on the
liquid—crystal display unit of the controller panel.
(2) Alternative power (Auxiliary power)
1) Check that when power feeding from the main power unit is stopped, the green
LEDs of the DC OPERATION ”ME/HF” and ”SES” switches on the MF/HF controller
panel will light, and check that when the ”MF/HF” switch is subsequently
pressed, the green ”MF/HF” switch LED will also light. Next, press the
”PWR(RX)” switch and check that the green ”PWR(RX)” switch LED lights and
that a display is made on the liquid-crystal display unit of the controller
panel.
Note: The ”AC” and ”DC” switches on the JSS-720 unit must be set to ON.

1.1.2 Operating status check

1.1.2.1 Checking the transmitter


(1) Frequency deviations
After selecting any two frequencies (one, MF band, and one, HF band), measure
these two frequencies at the output terminals of an exciter (ONO-251 FREQUENCY
CONVERTER) and make sure that both stay within their respective ratings.
(2) Antenna output power
Using the check meter provided in the main unit of the JSS—720 MF/HF radio

equipment, measure the PA voltages and currents corresponding to the previously


selected frequencies. Next, calculate the corresponding antenna power data
from the expression of [ Voltage(E)>< Current(l)>< Efficiency Power ], and ==

check that the calculated data stays within the specifications.


Note: Use the efficiency data keyed to the selected frequencies listed in the
relevant Factory Test Report.
(3) Communication with the party stated in the License
Actually communicate with the party stated in the License and check that normal
communication can take place.

1.1.2.2 Checking the receiver


(1) Receiving log
After setting the DSC mode, check that the contents of the communications
addressed to your vessel are correctly printed out onto a printer.
(2) Audio signal receiving
Set the receiving frequency to the JBO communications frequency level, and
check that audio signals are correctly received.
Also, check that the MOD, AF, BFO, and other variable keys correctly operate.
(3) Sounds of the loudspeaker
Check that normal sounds are heard from the internal loudspeaker of the MF/HF
controller.

1.1.2.3 Checking the digital selective call unit


(1) Distress message creation ,

Check that distress messages can be created in FILES 1 to 15 using the method
described in the equipment operating manual.
(2) Distress alarm message storage
Check that when power is temporarily turned off and then turned back on, the
distress messages created previously during step (1) above will have been
stored into the memory of the equipment.
Note: Enter messages in FILES 1 to 15, and perform checks.
(Press the ”DSC” key located in the FREQUENCY & FUNCTION section of the MF/HF
controller panel, and then holding down the asterisk key ”fi<”, press the enter
key ”ENT”. This displays data-setting items. If the data of the particular
item is not to be modified, press the cursor control key ”AK" to
proceed to
the next item.
If the data is to be modified, select that item using the cursor control key
”V” after setting the selection mode using the period key Pressing

the ”ENT” key here moves the cursor to the next item.

1.1.2.4 Checking the narrow-band direct printing telegraph


(1) Operation of the printer
Create messages using the NWZ-700 data terminal equipment, and check that the
messages can be correctly printed out.
Note: As directed in the equipment operating manual, select
F10(EDITOR) from the
initial display of the data terminal equipment and create test
messages.
Next, press the [PRINT] key. The messages will then be printed out.
(2) Recording paper and other consumables
Make sure that spare recording paper and other consumable materials are ready
on hand.

1.1.2.5 Checking the automatic emergency telephone equipment


(1) Press the ”TEST” and
”START/STOP" keys of the DISTRESS ALERT section of the MF/HF
controller panel together and check that the internal
loudspeaker generates
light ’beep’ sound.

1.1.2.6 Checking the digital selective call and watch/keep unit


(1) Message receiving
Have a remote office send a DSC message at any one frequency and check that the
message can be correctly received.
'

(2) Distress alarm storage


Check that any distress messages that may have been received in the
past are
correctly stored into the memory of the equipment.
'

(3) Scanning
Have a remote office send DSC messages at any two different frequencies and
check that the messages can be correctly received.
(4) Printer
Make sure that the printer correctly operates during the
message receiving
checks described in step (1) above.
1.1.3 Protective unit check

Make that the terminal sections and other sections of the main and
sure
auxiliary
power lines are appropriately protected so that electrical shocks do not occur.
2. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS AGAINST ERRORS

2.1 Self-Diagnosis

2.1.1 Usage of the self-diagnostic functions

2.1.1.1 Executing self-diagnosis

1) Prior to the start of self-diagnosis, the display unit of the NCH-700 MF/HF
controller makes the following display:

2.1.1.2 Terminating self-diagnosis

2.1.1.3 Self—diagnosing the NBDP (narrow-band direct printing telegraph)

Self-diagnostic testing of the NBDP consists of tests of level I and tests of


level 2.
Tests of level 1 can be carried out just by operating the keyboard of the
NWZ-700 data terminal equipment.
Tests of level 2 can be performed by setting the appropriate DIP switch.
Tests of level 2 contain various types of tests, such as an automatic gain
control (AGC) circuit, a serial I/O port test, etc. With the level-2 tests,
therefore, almost all circuits of the NBDP can be checked.

I) How to perform self-diagnostic tests of level 1'

In the TLX (FIB) mode, the liquid—crystal display unit of the data terminal

equipment initially makes this display:

To execute self-diagnostic tests of level 1 on the NBDP, press function key


”F9” on the keyboard of the data terminal equipment.

Next, press ”3” ”Enter” on the keyboard to select item 3 [Self check].
Test results are displayed on the liquid-crystal display unit of the data
terminal equipment, and they are also printed out onto the printer.
See Section 4, TROUBLESHOOTING, to check further details of display.

2) How to perform self—diagnostic tests of level 2

Almost all circuits of the NBDP are subjected to the self—diagnostic tests of

level 2. If JRC is to be contacted for any corrective information on NBDP


malfunctions, please let us know the test results that have been printed out
onto the printer.
Self-diagnostic tests of level 2 cover not only those of level
I, but also
various other tests, such as a serial I/O port test and an AGC test.
Prior to the start of the level—2 self-diagnostic
tests, DIP switch setting
shown below is required for the serial I/O ports and for the
loop tests of the
modem.

To execute self-diagnostic tests of level 2 on the NBDP, as with the level-l


tests, press function key ”F9” on the keyboard of the data terminal equipment.
Next, press ”3” ”Enter” on the keyboard to select item 3 [Self check].
Test results are displayed on the liquid-crystal
display unit of the data
terminal equipment, and they are also printed out onto the printer.
See Section 4, TROUBLESHOOTING, to check further details of display.

After the tests, switch 6 of the DIP switch assembly must be


reset to OFF. !
2.1.2 Error messages

The error message codes that may be displayed after self-diagnosis of each
circuit are listed here together with a description of the meaning of the

message\codes.

2.1.2.1 MF/HF receiver

Error message codes on the NRD—740 MF/HF receiver are listed below.
(This receiver contains replaceable PC boards that consist of eight circuits.
During self-diagnosis, appropriate signals are applied for each stage of the
AF, IF, and RF circuits. If any abnormal PC boards are found, the names of
those PC boards will be displayed.)
ERROR 60 The output signals of the RF TUNE CPL-269 circuit are abnormal.

ERROR 61 .The output signals of the RF AMP CAP—339 circuit are abnormal.

ERROR 62 The output signals of the IF FILTER CPU—59 circuit are abnormal.

ERROR 63 The output signals of the IF AMP GAE-263 circuit are abnormal.
ERROR 64 The LOOP-l CGA-153 circuit is unlocked.

ERROR 65 The LOOP-2 CGA—154 circuit is unlocked.

ERROR 66 The output signals of the REFERENCE/BF CGD—l42M circuit are

abnormal.

ERROR 67 The synthesizer control circuit and memory control circuit within
the CPU CDC-617M circuits are abnormal.

2.1.2.2 DSC W/K receiver

Error message codes on the NRD—720 MF/HF DSC W/K receiver are listed below.
(This receiver also contains replaceable PC boards that consist of eight
circuits. During self—diagnosis, appropriate signals are applied for each
stage of the AF, IF, and RF circuits. If any abnormal PC boards are found,
the names of those PC boards will be displayed.)
ERROR 70 The output signals of the RF TUNE CPL—271 circuit are abnormal.
