PROBLEM
The existing high pressure steering hoses connecting the steering pump
to the steering motor can fail in the coupling or hose to coupling
joint on certain D8T Track-Type Tractors. If the existing steering
hoses fail, the hydraulic system will lose oil and hydraulic and
steering functions can be degraded or lost.

ACTION REQUIRED
Note on 366-8857 Harness (Bulk):
This 6 wire, 14 gauge, braided harness is sold by the decimeter (dm).
However, to fill dealer orders CAT supplies a bulk spool (package) of
609 dm (60.9 meters) which can not be broken or returned. If the order
quantity to CAT is 1 to 608, the system will round it to the minimum
length of 609 dm. Since the spool is expensive, you may want to check
with other branch stores or other dealers to supply the 7 dm of harness
needed for each tractor. 7 decimeter (dm) equals 700 mm or 0.7 meter.

Follow the procedure in REHS7605, Special Instruction, "Procedure To

Install Longer Steering Hose Lines On Certain D8T Track-Type Tractors",
in order to modify the tractor and install the longer hoses. A new
mounting block must be welded inside the man hole to the left fender. A
new bracket is bolted to this block and used to secure a new hose clip
for the longer hoses.

A certified welder is required to weld the block to the fender. Stress

in these block-to-fender welds is high. Welding skill and specific
techniques are required to assure good results while welding out of

A locating fixture for the block and a new boss must be fabricated per
instructions in REHS7605. Parts required for this fixture and
additional tooling hardware are not included in the Parts Needed in
this Service Letter. Refer to Table 6 in REHS7605 for parts needed for
tooling.

NOTE: This is a 8.5-hour job

If there has been a previous repair, part age/hours will apply.

Retain a copy of the previous repair invoice in the dealer's
records for audit purposes, and specify repair date and machine
hours in the "Additional Comments" section of the warranty claim.

An additional 2.0 hours labor and travel time and mileage are
allowed for the certified welder. If welding is done by an outside
supplier, claim welding expenses at cost.

A maximum of $150 per branch store will be allowed for all

material and labor to fabricate the fixture and provide parts
listed as required tooling in Table 6 of Special Instruction
REHS7605.

PARTS DISPOSITION
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty
parts handling.
