The learners value the functions/purposes of oral communication.

III. Performance Standards


The learners write a 250-word essay of his/her objective observation and evaluation of the
various speakers watched and listened to.

IV. Learning Competency


The learners should be able to…
1. discuss the functions of communication;
2. identify the speaker’s purpose(s);
3. watch and listen to sample oral communication activities;
4. ascertain the verbal and nonverbal cues that each speaker uses to achieve his/her purpose;
5. comprehend various kinds of oral texts;
6. identify strategies used by each speaker to convey his/her ideas effectively; and
7. evaluate the effectiveness of an oral communication activity.

Day: 1
I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the meeting, the students should be able to:
1. recall an experience of receiving inspiring words;
2. define motivation as a function of communication;
3. identify the value of motivation as a function of communication; and
4. perform a simple role-play about inspiring others.

III. STRATEGY
A. Motivation
Memory Check – The students will be asked…
1. When was the last time you were motivated by someone to do something good or worthwhile?
What did this person say to you? What made his/her words so inspiring?
B. Presentation
1. Motivation as a communication function will be defined.
2. The students will watch and listen to an inspirational video which will be analyzed.

C. Infused Values
Inspiring others - Motivation is the desire to do things. Communication motivates or encourages
people to live better. Even a simple pat on the back and reassuring nod can be inspiring.

D. Summary/Synthesis
Motivation is the key communication function that aims to encourage people into action. Words
and gestures motivate people. Thus, being able to motivate others through these is a skill you
should develop so that you can encourage and inspire the people around you in various ways.

E. Evaluation
The students will be given instructions to follow.
How would you motivate the following people? Pair off with a classmate and role-play each
situation. Use appropriate words and gestures.
1. A friend who injured himself while playing
2. A friend who failed a test
3. Your classmate who joined a contest had a tough loss
4. A friend having a hard time finishing his/her artwork
5. A friend who lost a loved one

IV. ASSIGNMENT:
1. What are some words that people say to motivate others? What nonverbal cues accompany
these words?
2. Explain the line “Everybody needs motivation”.

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the meeting, the students should be able to:
1. identify the accurate source of information in times of difficulty;
2. read a text for an analysis;
3. determine the value of information as a function of communication; and
4. discuss the relationship of information as a function of communication to individual’s daily
activities.

III. STRATEGY
A. Motivation
Memory Check – The students will be asked…
1. Which media entity or government agency do you rely on when it comes to knowing vital
information about the weather or any potential situation of difficulty? Why? Is it effective in
disseminating information? Why or why not?

B. Presentation
1. Information as a function of communication will be defined.
2. Reading text will be introduced in the class and will be analyzed by the students.

C. Infused Values
Honesty - Many people have jobs that require them to disseminate information to the public. If
you choose a similar career, remember that only truthful and accurate information should be
shared.

D. Summary/Synthesis
The function of communication is apparent in the information-dissemination function of news
agencies. This has become so much easier due to technology. Through the use of media and
internet, it is much easier for some people to misinform the general public. Hence, effective
communication strategies are crucial in fulfilling the informative function of communication.

E. Evaluation
Buzz Session – Based on the two questions being provided, the students will discuss their ideas
in the group.
1. Give three examples of important pieces of information that people share with one another on
a daily basis. Explain briefly why each pieces of information is important.
2. Do you think communicating information is the most basic communication function? Why or
why not?

IV. ASSIGNMENT:
How is information an important communication function between a government and its people?

II. Content Standards


The learners recognize that communicative competence requires understanding of speech
context, speech style, speech act and communicative strategy.

III. Performance Standards


The learners demonstrate effective use of communicative strategy in a variety of speech
situations.

IV. Learning Competency


The learners should be able to…
1. identify the various types of speech context;
2. exhibits appropriate verbal and nonverbal behavior in a given speech context;
3. distinguishes types of speech style;
4. identifies social situations in which each speech style is appropriate to use;
5. observe the appropriate language forms in using a particular speech style; and
6. respond appropriately and effectively to a speech act.

A. Motivation
How do you communicate with yourself? Cite three ways. What is its benefit?

B. Presentation
1. Types of speech context will be discussed.
2. Types of speech styles will also be explained.

C. Infused Values
Right Choice of Words - It is important to know the situation and the appropriate words to use
when dealing with other people.

D. Summary/Synthesis
The context dictates and affects the way people communicate. There is a marked difference in
the language used, degree of formality, and manner of expression in each style due to the
different types of people involved and their degree of closeness.

E. Evaluation
Identification –Examples will be given and the students will identify what speech context it
belongs; and situations will be provided, they will determine the type of speech style.

IV. ASSIGNMENT:
How can a person effectively enhance hi/her intrapersonal intelligence and intrapersonal
communication skills? Cite at least three which you think are doable.

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the meeting, the students should be able to:
1. demonstrate understanding of speech context and speech style; and
2. demonstrate positive behavior through composition writing.

Recap – The students will be asked questions pertaining to the previous topic.

B. Presentation
Direction for the individual composition writing will be given.

C. Infused Values
Creativity – Speech writing will be easy when the teacher doesn’t impose the flow of writing a
composition because the students are individually creative.

D. Summary/Synthesis
Writing is a challenge because it isn’t easy to start. However, when the writer grasps the
appropriate words for his speech, ideas flow continuously.

E. Evaluation
Speech Delivery – The students will deliver their speech in front of the class and the listeners
will identify the purpose of the speakers.

IV. ASSIGNMENT:
Define Speech Act and give at least three examples.
