PART – A (10×2=20 Marks) (Answer all questions)

1. What are the various phases of design process?

2. Write down the factors influencing machine design.
3. Define tolerance.
4. Explain the types of fits.
5. What is the difference between straight and curved beams?
6. What is meant by eccentric loading?
7. Define factor of safety.
8. What is stress concentration factor?
9. What are the factors that affect notch sensitivity?
10. What are the various theories of failure?
PART – B (5X13=65) (ANSWER ANY 5)

11. The crane hook carries a load of 20 kN as shown in Fig. 5.11. The section at X-X is
rectangular whose horizontal side is 100 mm. Find the stresses in the inner and outer fibres
at the given section.

12. A C-clamp is subjected to a maximum load of W, as shown in Fig. 5.13. If the maximum
tensile stress in the clamp is limited to 140 MPa, find the value of load W.
13.A cantilever of span 500 mm carries a vertical downward load of 6 kN at free end. Assume
the yield value of 350 MPa and factor of safety is 3. Find the economical section fro the
cantilever among (a) circular cross section of diameter ‘d’ (b) Rectangular section of depth
‘h’ and width ‘t’ with h/t = 2 (c) I section of depth 7t and flange width 5t where t is
thickness. Specify the dimension and cross sectional area.

14. Explain the factors influencing the machine design.

15. The stress state in a machine member is given as follows σ x = 20 MPa, σy = 7 MPa, Ʈxy = 4
MPa. Find the Principal, Normal and shear stresses. Locate the angle of σ 1 and σ2 from X-
axis.

16. Determine the maximum, minimum normal stresses and maximum shear stresses at the
crankshaft bearing as shown in figure.

PART – C (Compulsory Question) (1X15=15)

17. A Cantilever beam shown in figure made of C 40 steel of circular cross section is
subjected to a load that varies from F (compressive) to 3F (tensile). Determine the
value of F that this beam can withstand. Assume FOS = 2.1, stress concentration
factor = 1.2, notch sensitivity factor = 0.3, surface finish factor = 0.85, size factor =
0.86.
