ASSIGNMENT 5

Due Date: March 20, 2006

A penalty of 10 marks/day will be taken off for late assignments

Pipeline with Pump or Turbine

(1) Losses through the system of Figure 1 are 4V2/2g, exclusive of the turbine. The turbine is 90 percent
efficient and runs at 240 rpm. To produce 1000 hp for H=300 ft, determine the discharge and torque
in the turbine shaft.
(2) How much horsepower (Q γ Hp /550) must be applied to 2.5 ft3/s of water from the lower to the upper
reservoir (see Figure 2). Draw the hydraulic grade and energy lines. Assume smooth cast iron pipe
and square-edge pipe entrance (Kentrance =0.50, γ water = 62.4 lb/ft3, ν water = 1.2 x 10-5 ft2 /s)

Force Exerted on Pressure Conduits

(3) On the right end of a 6-in-dia horizontal pipe is a diverging nozzle which discharges a 6.5-in-dia jet.
The velocity in the pipe is 10 fps and the jet discharges into the air. If the fluid is water, what is the
axial force on the nozzle? In which direction does this force act? Neglect fluid action.
Reaction of a Jet
(4) Consider the 0.10-m-diameter water stream hitting the conical deflector in Fig. 3. Find the force F
required to hold the deflector stationary.
Other Applications of the Momentum Principle
(5) Find the horizontal thrust of the water on each meter of width of the sluice gate shown in the Fig. 4.
Laminar Flow in Circular Pipes
(6) (a) An oil with a kinematic viscosity of 0.005 ft2/s flow through a 3-in diameter pipe with a velocity
of 10 fps. Is the flow laminar or turbulent?

(b) If the oil of Prob. 6(a) weights 58 lb/ ft2, what will be the flow rate and head loss in a 3,000-ft
length of 4-in diameter pipe when the Reynolds number is 800?
