First Word

“The
American
Experiment”
Dr. Del Tackett
Sunday Night
7:00 p.m.
Worship Center

First Baptist Church Naples October 2 & 3, 2010

“The Issue is Still Truth”
Francis Schaeffer, the great Christian apologist and philosopher,
said not long before he died, “The issue is still truth.” Absolutely! He
also called this most important matter “true truth.” As we welcome
Dr. Del Tackett and his lectures on “The Truth Encounter” and
“The American Experiment,” we are drawn back to Schaeffer’s
words.

Evangelical Christians today are being accused of“absolutaphobia,”

saying that we are wrong to say that anyone can be right. Those who believe
in consistency of values are seen as mentally ill, narrow-minded, or as redneck
jihadists. This “Christian bashing” is reflected in the bumper sticker, “Hate is not
a family value.” So we are accused of “hate crimes” when we denounce the sin of
homosexuality or when we evangelize. We are even accused of playing politics
when we try “to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God.”

The postmodernists of our culture reject biblical standards, absolute truth,

and morality for the sake of constant change, which to them equals freedom.
They have many identities that are not allowed to impinge on the other. They
unblushingly compartmentalize life, having a sexual side that is different from a
church side, a public life divorced from a private one, as if one has no influence
over the other. Many of them feel that it is impossible to lie because truth is just
a matter of interpretation, and truth claims are merely construction of language
and subject to endless reinterpretation. When it comes to the law or the
Constitution, they prefer loopholes rather than keyholes of truth claims, fluidity
rather than foundational principles.

“Tolerance” has become the primary virtue of the culture. Christians have always
taught that true tolerance is allowing others to make their own choices in a free
society. However, so-called tolerance is now a club to beat us over the head if we
disagree or even say that we “love the sinner but hate the sin.” They want us to
agree with them and smear what they call our “negative tolerance” by pushing
“positive tolerance.” But as G.K. Chesterton wrote, “Tolerance is the virtue of
people who do not believe anything.”

This challenge to our youth is why it is so vital that we have a biblical, loving,
and exciting ministry for our teens. We welcome Justin Faircloth as he comes in
view of a call to be voted on next week as our Middle School pastor. This position
includes fifth through eighth grade. Pray for his wife, Alana, and for him.

We must pray for spiritual discernment, wisdom, love, and courage to heed the
words of President George Washington in his Inaugural Address to Congress, “We
must not disregard the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has
ordained.” The issue is still truth.

Guest Reception
There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the
Saturday night and Sunday morning 11:00 a.m. service. Come and meet
Dr. Wicker.
FBCN Welcomes Justin Faircloth
On October 9 &10, please join us in

Baptist Church of Inverness, FL where he has served as Youth Pastor for the past

Prayer Surge is a church-

wide prayer emphasis.
Join us together as we
pray for...

Our Nation
2 Chronicles 7:14

• Pray that Americans would understand and heed the fact that our
nation’s strength comes from God, not from ourselves.
• Pray that authentic Christians would model Christ’s love and grace in
workplaces throughout America.
• Ask the Lord to thwart efforts to remove Him from America’s public
square.
• Intercede for our troops serving in Afghanistan, Iraq, and throughout
the world. Ask the Lord to comfort, protect, and guide them.
• Pray that God would send godly leaders to run our country in the
upcoming election.
• Pray that God will give our leaders wisdom.
• Pray that God will change our country’s morals (abortion,
homosexuality, drugs, crime, divorce, etc.).
• Pray that God will convict and change us (God’s people, especially the
church in America).
