ACADEMIC REGULATIONS AND GUIDELINES FOR THE CANDIDATES OF


RESEARCH PROGRAMMES (Fulltime/ Part Time)

Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Advanced Studies (JNIAS) is a premier Technical Institution


established by Dr. D. Swaminadhan Research Foundation (DSRF) at Hyderabad.

JNIAS has a number of Faculties, Schools, Departments and Centres in the field of
Science and Technology and Social Sciences and Humanities.

JNTUH hereby recognises JNIAS as an Advanced Research Institute for offering Ph.D.,
P.G., P.G Diploma and Training Programmes on a permanent basis. JNTUH and JNIAS
hereby agree to collaborate in making policy guidelines as also design, develop and
implement the Ph.D., P.G., P.G Diploma and Training Programmes in the following
disciplines in accordance with the MOU entered between JNTUH and JNIAS:
1. Environmental Studies
2. Water Resources
3. Energy
4. Computer Science
5. Management
6. Biotechnology
7. Mathematics
8. Physics
9. Chemistry
This notification is being issued in accordance with the MOU between JNIAS and JNTUH
for offering Ph.D programme by JNIAS and the final degrees will be awarded by JNTUH,
Hyderabad.

The Academic Regulations and guidelines for monitoring and Evaluation of the
candidates for admission into Part Time Ph.D Programmes for the academic year
2010-11 cover the following aspects:

1.0 ELIGIBILITY AND ADMISSION OF CANDIDATES:

Admission shall be open to candidates who fulfill the following requirements:

1.1 ELIGIBILITY:

I. Educational Qualifications:

(i) Candidates must have a Post Graduate Degree in concerned discipline with a
minimum of 55% percent marks in aggregate (in case of SC & ST 50%
aggregate marks).

For Ph.D. programme in Management Science, candidates possessing MBA


are eligible. The candidates possessing Post Graduate qualification in any
other discipline with 5 years of experience in managerial capacity are also
eligible.

(ii) In Multi disciplinary areas:

(a) Water Resources: Post Graduate degree in Water Resources/Civil Engineering


/AgriculturalEngineering/Hydrology/Geology/Geophysics/Meteorology/
Geography.

(b) Biotechnology: Post Graduate Degree in Biotechnology/Chemical


Engineering/Food Technology/Bio Chemical Engineering / Bio Chemistry
/Microbiology/ Life Sciences(Zoology, Botany, Genetics, Agricultural Sciences) /
Pharmacy / Environmental Sciences.

(c) Energy: Post Graduate degree in Energy Systems/Mechanical
Engineering/Electrical and Electronics Engineering/Chemical Engineering or
Technology.

(d) Environmental studies : Post graduate degree in Physical Sciences/Natural


Sciences/Life Sciences/

1.2 Admissions for the Ph.D Programmes in the above mentioned disciplines shall be
made by the Ph.D Admission Committee constituted jointly by Jawaharlal Nehru
Institute of Advanced Studies (JNIAS), Hyderabad and Jawaharlal Nehru
Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH) by conducting an interview.

1.3 All admissions for the academic programmes of the Institute are Nationwide and the
rule of reservation will apply.

1.4 In all faculties, candidates must have passed the Post Graduate Degree
Examination of any recognised University or an examination recognized as
equivalent by UGC in the discipline concerned with a minimum of 55% marks in
aggregate and for SC and ST category, the aggregate shall be 50% marks in the
concerned subject.

1.5 Candidates who have been working for at least 1 year in well equipped Educational /
Scientific / R&D / Industrial / Government Organizations and engaged in Scientific /
Technological / Engineering / Managerial activities, as the case may be possessing
the minimum academic qualifications shall be eligible for Part-Time Ph.D.

1.6 A candidate seeking admission as part-time scholar will have to produce the
following at the time of registration a letter from the employer permitting the
candidate to pursue the course.

1.7 All the fee payments shall be made in the form of bank draft drawn in favour of
Registrar, JNIAS, Hyderabad. The original certificates and admission folio of the
candidate shall be maintained by the office of the Research & Development cell,
JNTUH till the completion of the research program of the respective candidates.

1.8 A Student Admission Number, which will also be the Hall Ticket number, will be
assigned to the candidate by JNTUH. An Identity Card for the exclusive use of
Library facilities will be given to each candidate, by the Research & Development
cell.

1.9 The Institute reserves the right to terminate the Fellowship of any candidate if the
progress of research work is not satisfactory.

1.10 JNIAS / JNTUH may permit modification in the topic Area of research provided the
candidate has applied for it within one year from the date of admission. The topic of
research is the broad area of research whereas the title of research is the caption of
the thesis.

1.11 Declaration by the candidate that he/she has not registered for any other course
leading to the award of a degree. Incase of any such ambiguity he/she will forfeit
the admission.

1.12 Candidate seeking admission to register their name for Part – Time research
programme should submit his/her application duly signed by supervisor and along
with the signature of the Head of the Institution/Organization where candidate is
employed.

1.13 The selection of the candidates for admission into Ph.D would be made based on an
interview.

1.14 No fellowships would be granted for the admitted candidates.

1.15 Reservations: As per the rules.

2.1 ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

Diversity of An-oxygenic Phototropic Bacteria, Bacterial Metabolism of Sulphonated


Aeromatic Compounds Characterization and waste treatment, Nano Technology,
Hydrogen Production. Atmospheric sciences, zero pollution studies and allied fields.

2.2 WATER RESOURCES

Ground Water exploration, Water Resources Management, Water Harvesting and


allied fields

2.3 ENERGY

I.C. Engines, Heat transfer, Thermodynamics Analysis of cycles, Fuels, Turbo


machinery, conventional & Non Conventional Energy Systems. CAD/CAM,
Geometric modeling, Manufacturing, Optimization, Metal Cutting, Machine design
and Industrial Engineering. Smart composites and allied fields.

2.4 COMPUTER SCIENCE

Data warehousing and mining, Computers Networks, Software Engineering, Image


Processing, Speech recognition, mobile computing, artificial intelligence.

2.6 MANAGEMENT STUDIES

Management Studies, Accounting, Urban Economics, Human Resource


management and allied fields.

2.5 BIO-TECHNOLOGY

Microbial Biodiversity, Animal Cell Technology, Microbial Enzymes/ Products, Plant


Bio-Technology, Industrial Bio-technology and allied fields.

2.6 MATHEMATICS

Number Theory, Operations Research, Applied Statistics. Non linear dynamical systems,
Mathematical modeling, neural networks, data and knowledge extraction and allied fields.

2.7 PHYSICS

Fiber Optics & Sensors, Nuclear Radiation Physics, Bio-Physics, Solid State Physics,
Material Science, Thin film Technology, Plasma Physics, Space Physics, High Voltage
Engineering, Particles and Fields, Condensed matter Physics, Liquid Crystalline Phase
Transitions, Ferro Electric and Anti-Ferro Electric liquid crystals, Switching times and
Viscosity, Molecular Spectroscopy and allied fields.

2.8 CHEMISTRY

Bio-chemistry, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Testing of Biologically Active Molecules,


Analytical techniques in environmental studies. Bio-fuels. Determination and removal of
toxic elements in pollution. Pharmaceutical chemistry. Bio-inorganic chemistry, catalysis,
chemical kinetics, electrochemistry. Environmental chemistry and allied fields.

3.0 PRE - Ph.D. EXAMINATION

3.1 A minimum of two courses shall be prescribed in the relevant field of research for the
Pre-Ph.D. examination conducted by JNTUH from the approved list of Pre-Ph.D.
subjects.

3.2 The candidates are required to pass in these two courses; the minimum marks
required for a pass in each course shall be 50%. In case a candidate fails to pass in
three attempts his admission shall be cancelled. Payment of exam fees for writing
Pre-Ph.D and inability to write the exam is also deemed as an attempt.

3.3 The Pre-Ph.D. examination shall be held after six months and before twelve months
from the date of admission.

3.4 The subjects offered for Pre-Ph.D. examinations in various faculties including syllabi
is available on the JNIAS website.

3.5 Candidates possessing an M.Phil degree in the subject concerned will be exempted
from the Pre-Ph.D. examination. Such candidates should however appear for
interview for selection for part-time Ph.D. programme.

4.0 FEE PARTICULARS:

On selection for admission, candidates shall be required to pay the prescribed fee as
per the following criteria and deposits. The fee and deposits have to be paid on
stipulated dates regularly every year, till the successful completion of the programme
and submission of thesis or cancellation of the admission as the case may be. If the
fee is not paid by the stipulated due date, a late fee will be levied. Non-payment of
the prescribed fee beyond the extended due date will lead to the cancellation of
admission with prior notice to the candidate.

Semester Fees: Rs. 20,000 Tuition Fee and Rs. 5,000 as development fee per
semester

Application & Examination Fees: As specified by JNTUH, Hyderabad.

5.0 DURATION OF THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME

5.1 Research Scholars registered for Part Time Ph.D can submit the thesis after
completion of a minimum of three years from the date of admission subject to
passing of the pre-Ph.D. Examination.

5.2 For the candidate to submit the thesis for Ph.D., he/she shall publish three research
papers with at least one paper published/accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed
refereed national or international journal and others in refereed national/international
conferences, which has to be enclosed to the thesis. The candidate can also submit
the thesis, if he/she has at least one recognized patent rights, whose details are to
be enclosed.

5.3 Early Submission: If a research scholar desires to submit a thesis prior to the
completion of three years, he/she should have

i) completed two and half years


ii) published at least four (4) international journal papers
iii) have recommendation of the Review Committee
iv) have an outstanding contribution
v) have valid reason thereof for early submission
and he/she should have passed the pre-Ph.D. Examination.

5.4 The Candidates should complete the research work within a maximum period of 5
years. They should pay tuition fee until the end of the semester/year in which the
thesis is submitted. If the Tuition Fee is not paid as per rules, penalty may be levied. If
Tuition Fee is not paid continuously for two years the registration will be cancelled.

5.5 Late Submission: A grace period of one year will be given for completing the work
subject to recommendation of the supervisor & the Research Committee and approval
of university competent authority.

If the candidate fails to submit thesis within stipulated period, his/her registration will
be cancelled. However, depending on the progress of the work and as per the
recommendation of the Review Committee, re-registration may be considered with a
penalty of Rs. 15,000/-. Such candidates are required to submit their thesis within two
years from the date of extension.

6.0 GENERAL INFORMATION:

6.1 The academic and other regulations of JNTUH will apply to all the Ph. D Programmes.

6.2 Incomplete applications or applications received after the last date will not be
considered and fee paid will not be refunded.

6.3 CERTIFICATES TO BE SUBMITTED:

1. Degree Certificate of the qualifying Examination. (Provisional Certificate, if the


convocation is not held by the University, along with an evidence to this effect).
2. Date of Birth Certificate (SSC/SSLC/HSC/MP/CBSC).
3. Latest No Objection Certificate in original from the present employer to prosecute
the Part-Time Ph.D.
4. Latest experience certificate of at least One year by 30th June, 2009 after
acquiring the prescribed qualification.
5. Permanent Integrated Caste Certificate in respect of SC/ST/BC candidates issued
by a Revenue authority not lower in rank than that of Mandal Revenue Officer.
6. Caste Certificate (in respect of SC/ST/BC candidates) from the head of the
institution last studied even if scholarship was not availed of under these
categories, (Alternatively, certificate from the service records duly signed by
competent authority in the organization, where the candidates is presently
employed).
7. Medical Certificate from District Medical Board for PH candidates.
