Beacon Sizing

• For better location accuracy, ensure that successive beacons are

placed <=40 ft apart
• Beacon distances may vary based on various factors (e.g. path vs. area Recommended for larger open areas
model, reflective vs. non. reflective environments, varying ceiling
heights, etc.)
3
Recommended for tighter location
accuracy (1-5m)

Deployment Considerations
1. Wall Mount vs. Ceiling Mount

• Battery-powered Aruba beacons are adhesive and can be mounted in different

ways
• Most common mounting techniques: Wall mount and ceiling mount
• Wall mount- Can be deployed in open-roof areas or areas with very high ceilings
• Ceiling mount-
– Ideal for environments with aesthetics concerns (most customers will only allow
ceiling mounting)
– Provides more resiliency to attenuation from crowds
– Keeps beacons out of reach from curious people
– Successfully tested with ceilings at least 17ft high

Deployment Considerations
2. RF Challenges

• Deploying beacons in areas with reflective surroundings may result in

jumpiness of blue dot
• Carpeted areas have shown better blue dot stability than areas with marble
floors
• Consider Path model, if possible, for reflective environments.

Configuring Beacons
Beacon Terminology

A beacon’s identity = UUID + Major + Minor

1. UUID: String used to identify an organization

2. Major/Minor: This combination can be used to uniquely identify

beacons.
– Majors can be used to differentiate geographical areas within a deployment

– E.g. Beacons on Floor 1 and Floor 2 may be identified by Majors 1000 and 2000 respectively

– Beacons on Floor 1 may be identified by Major/Minor: 1000/1, 1000/2, 1000/3 …. and so on
