Pitch Black – 18 (PB-18

It is a biennial warfare exercise hosted by Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Indian Air Force
(IAF) for first time will participate in multinational air exercise Pitch Black – 18 (PB-18) in
Australia hosted Royal Australian Air.
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a small deposit scheme for the girl child launched as a
part of the „Beti Bachao Beti Padhao‟ campaign. By amending Sukanya Samriddhi Account
Rules, 2016, the Union Government has reduced minimum yearly deposit required under popular
girl child savings scheme, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana to Rs 250 from Rs 1,000 earlier. This has
been lowered to enable more people to enjoy benefits of this scheme.

Myanmar has joined the India-initiated International Solar Alliance (ISA), thus, becoming the
68th signatory to the Framework Agreement of the ISA that aims for optimum utilisation of solar
energy.

Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga project

The gas pipeline project aims to provide piped cooking gas to residents of Varanasi and later to
millions of people in states like Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.

Haryana Government has launched „Paudhagiri campaign‟, an unique program to increase green

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) recently organised the „Ganga Vriksharopan
Abhiyan‟ in five main Ganga basin states – Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and
West Bengal. The State Forest Departments of these five states acted as the Nodal Agencies for
the smooth and effective execution of the campaign.

Samagra Shiksha scheme:

„Samagra Shiksha‟ is an overarching programme for school education extending from Primary
till class 12. The programme was introduced in the Union Budget 2018-19 with the aim to treat
school education holistically without segmentation of primary and secondary education.
India became Vice-Chair or regional head of Asia Pacific Region of the World Customs
Organisation (WCO) for two years from July 2018 to June 2020.

Sambal Scheme
Madhya Pradesh Government has Sambal Yojana, an outstanding power bill waiver scheme and
subsidised power scheme for labourers and poor families.

‘Khan Prahari’
It is a Mobile Application „Khan Prahari‟ developed by CMPDI, Ranchi a Subsidiary of CIL and
Bhaskarcharya Institute of Space Application and Geo-informatics (BISAG).
Khan Prahari is a tool for reporting any activity taking place related to illegal coal mining like rat
hole mining, pilferage etc. One can upload geo-tagged photographs of the incident along with
textual information directly to the system.

International

Hague Convention
The Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of
Intercountry Adoption (Convention) is an international agreement to safeguard intercountry
adoptions. Concluded on May 29, 1993 in The Hague, the Netherlands, the Convention
establishes international standards of practices for intercountry adoptions
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has adopted Resolution 2428 (2018) to impose an
arms embargo on South Sudan

European Bank for Reconstruction & Development:

India has joined the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) as the 69th
shareholder, paving the way for more joint investment with Indian companies across the EBRD‟s

India, South Korea Sign Five MoUs in Science & Technology
India and South Korea today signed five MoUs in the field of Science & Technology. Union
Minister for Science & Technology, Dr Harsh Vardhan and his South Korean counterpart,Mr.
You Young Min signed three MoUs for (i) Programme of Cooperation 2018-21; (ii)
Establishment of Future Strategy Group; (iii) Cooperation in Biotechnology & Bioeconomy.

Two other MoUs were signed between Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), and
South Korean National Research Council for Science & Technology and IIT Mumbai and Korea
Institute of Science &Technology,to further accelerate future-oriented cooperation in their
respective sectors.

Golden Globe Race

The 2018 Golden Globe Race is a sailing race around the world which started on 1 July 2018
from Les Sables-d'Olonne, France.
Commander Abhilash Tomy of the Indian Navy is all set to head off on a unique voyage. The
officer is the only invitee from Asia to participate in the prestigious Golden Globe Race (GGR)

Eminent Persons Group (EPG)

The EPG was formed in January 2016 by Governments of Nepal and India for reviewing the
entire gamut of Nepal-India relations and update bilateral agreement and treaties. It is a joint
mechanism consisting experts and intellectuals from India and Nepal. There are four members
each from Nepalese and Indian.

South Africa has unveiled MeerKAT- a super radio telescope, a first phase of what will be the
world‟s largest telescope in a project to try to unravel the secrets of the universe. The telescope
was inaugurated in the remote South African town of Carnarvon.

The fourth edition of Bay of Bengal Initiatives for Multi-Sectoral, Technical and Economic
Cooperation (BIMSTEC) will be held in Kathmandu, capital city of from 30 to 31 August, 2018.
India is going to host inaugural 2+2 Dialogue with United States in September 2018 in New
Delhi.
The dialogue s aimed enhancing strategic coordination between both countries and maintaining

Parliament has passed Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018 that aims to curb practice of
evading criminal prosecution by economic offenders fleeing from country to evade clutches
Indian law by remaining outside jurisdiction of Indian courts.
Stock exchange major Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has secured image trademark for its
iconic building, Phiroze Jeejeebhoy Towers located on Dalal Street in Mumbai, Maharashtra
under Trade Marks Act, 1999.

FASTags
FASTag is a simple to use, reloadable tag which enables automatic deduction of toll charges and
lets you pass through the toll plaza without stopping for the cash transaction. FASTag is linked
to a prepaid account from which the applicable toll amount is deducted. The tag employs Radio-
frequency Identification (RFID) technology and is affixed on the vehicle's windscreen after the
tag account is active.

Science and Tech

BrahMos missile
BrahMos, the supersonic cruise missile was successfully test-fired recently. BrahMos is a joint
venture between the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of India and
NPOM of Russia. The name Brahmos has been taken from two rivers – Brahmaputra and
Moskva. It is a world-class weapon with multi-platform, multi-mission role and is capable of
being launched from land, sea and air.The Brahmos cruise missiles have an effective strike range
of around 290-300 km.

Scientists have created a and named it Meghalayan, after a stalagmite from new phase in
Earth’s geological history a cave in the Indian state of Meghalaya that helped define climatic
events 4,200 years ago, marking the beginning of the phase that continues till today.
Parker solar probe: NASA robotic spacecraft to probe the outer corona of the Sun

GRACE- FO mission:
The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-on (GRACE-FO) mission is a
partnership between NASA and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
China successfully launched two remote sensing satellites PRSS-1 and PakTes-1A of Pakistan on
board of Long March-2C rocket from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre.

PakTES-1A:
It is Pakistan‟s indigenously developed scientific experiment satellite developed by engineers
from its space agency SUPARCO (Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission)

Formalin is a toxic, colourless solution that is derived by dissolving formaldehyde gas in water.
Fish samples in Chennai test positive for formalin. This is the first time samples of fish in Tamil
Nadu have tested positive for formalin.
Kepler is a space observatory launched by NASA to discover Earth-size planets orbiting other
