HOW TO WRITE A RHYTHMIC OSTINATO

Tempo – pace or speed at which a section of music is played

Rhythmic Ostinato – a short, constantly repeated rhythmic pattern throughout the entire piece of music which
creates a new layer of sound on top of the pulse

Rhythm:
• Rhythmic ostinatos usually use quarter and eighth notes and rests

HALF NOTE 2 BEATS


QUARTER NOTE 1 BEAT
QUARTER REST 1 BEAT
EIGHTH NOTE PAIR 1 BEAT

SIXTEENTH NOTE GROUPING 1 BEAT

There are 4 beats in every measure. Create two measures that will repeat over and over. Each box is a measure.

Good rhythmic ostinatos keep a steady beat and uses rest in the pattern. Rests are NOT assigned notes.
Make sure that you write the rhythmic ostinato using the tonic and dominant notes.
