DKG Mission Statement: The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal
growth of women educators and excellence in education.

From the President’s Pen

Friends and fellow Kappa Phi members,

I am honored and excited by the confidence and opportunity that you have given me. It is
my pleasure to serve as your president, and I look forward to working with you to further
the goals of DKG and Kappa Phi over the next two years. We have been charged with exploring new
paths and new ways of doing things to build bridges into the future.

This summer has been full of opportunities to actively participate in DKG activities. Kappa Phi was rep-
resented by Susan Price, Celeste Craig, Nancy Shaheen and Lee Nitcholas at the DKG State Convention
in Waco in June. We were very busy attending meetings and enjoying the new and innovative sessions,
but we managed to get in a considerable amount of fun, as well.

Your Executive Board had a planning meeting at Tina Flatt’s house in June and worked on plans for the
upcoming year. Following the meeting Tina fed us all a delicious lunch. Kudos to Tina for being a great
and brave hostess! (She had a group of band members from her son’s high school coming for a get-
together after us.)

In July Susan Price represented us at the DKG International Convention in Austin, and she will be shar-
ing that experience with us soon. We are very interested in hearing about an International convention.

July 15 was the deadline to sign up people for the Area IX Workshop on Saturday, September 15, in
Little Elm. We will be collecting the $12 fee at our August meeting. I haven’t seen the final list of those
attending, but it looks like we will have a nice group. And I just got a notice that we can still add more if
anyone else wants to come.

Thank you for entrusting me with the leadership of this important organization. Working with all of you
as a team, we will build bridges into the future!

Lee Nitcholas, Kappa Phi President

$$ Money Matters $$

Delta Kappa Gamma International requires an annual report of the chapter treasurer,
and I thought you might like to know where we stand. Our June 30th report of 2017
showed total assets of $10,909.04, with 29 members. The June 30th, 2018 report
shows $10,710.66, with 28 members. Remember that $5786.86 was designated scholarship money sev-
eral years ago. Also, from the membership money of $90, $60 is sent to State and International. I think
we do a great job with the money we have. An increase in membership would help our finances.

I sent Nu Delta Chapter registration fees (for the Area Workshop) of $12 for eight members. If you have
not paid, remember to do so. You can send it to me or give it to me the next time you see me. If you did-
n’t commit to attend the Area Workshop, you can still do so, but materials may not have your name on
them. Let me know.

You can pay your dues for 2018-19 beginning August 1st. Promptness is much appreciated by me!

Stay as cool as possible!

Pat Bielamowicz, Treasurer

DKG International Convention Reflections

I was privileged and honored to represent Kappa Phi at the International Con-
vention in Austin. It was a good experience, and I did enjoy the convention.
Met folks from Japan, Hawaii, and all over the U.S. and the world. Heard a
variety of languages being spoken in the hallways. A lot of the meetings were
3
business meetings, but I did hear some good speakers, especially at the Global
Awareness Forum. I almost got to vote on the name change, but only had an
opportunity to vote on amendments. They ran out of time at that meeting and voted on it the next day.
Found the results on DKG Facebook—the name stays the same.

On Monday morning I was one of Michelle Grandinetti’s registration helpers. We took the member’s
information card and gave them a program and a registered voting device. (Those were so cool! Once
you voted, the results from over 2,000 women were noted on the screen as to whether it passed or not—
by percent.) It was a good way to meet folks from all over. That afternoon I had some spare time and
went back and alphabetized the contact cards. I feel like I did at least a thousand!

But then we had the first meeting and the Procession of the Flags. Quite inspiring to see the different
flags. And some of the flag bearers wore a traditional dress from their country. Interesting meeting
followed by the Texas Night and some Texas Two Stepping. A good time was had by all there.
