3PART 1 - GENERAL
41.1 DESCRIPTION
5 A. SCOPE
6 The Contractor shall perform external inspections of the project cast iron pipe (CIP),
7 ductile iron pipe (DIP) and steel pressure mains and record the estimated pipe wall
8 thickness using ultrasonic technologies. The pressure mains will remain in service during
9 the ultrasonic inspection. The intent of the inspection is to obtain data of sufficient
10 quality and quantity to identify areas of pipe wall material loss due to internal corrosion,
11 particularly at high points of the pipeline.
12 At each location an ultrasonic test is performed work shall be coordinated with OCU and
13 the location of the test shall be documented as specified using approved GPS technology.
14 No payment shall be made for any work not properly field located by GPS.
15 B. REQUIREMENTS
16 1. The Contractor shall prepare the exterior of the pipeline for inspection including any
17 pipe cleaning and surface grinding to provide a good contact surface for the ultrasonic
18 probe.
19 2. Calibrate the ultrasonic testing (UST) equipment using a section of pipe similar to the
20 test pipe in terms of material and original wall thickness. The UST equipment shall
21 be calibrated to match the measured wall thickness of the sample.
22 3. The Contractor shall conduct an external inspection of the identified project ferrous
23 pipe main sites using ultrasonic testing equipment and shall document the site of each
24 test and the measured wall thickness at each site. A minimum of six locations around
25 the circumference of the pipe shall be tested at each test site. These shall include a
26 minimum of three locations at the pipe crown at the 1:00, 12:00 and 11:00 o’clock
27 positions, one at each side of the pipe at the spring line and one in the lower half or
28 haunch of the pipe circumference depending on ease of access.
29 4. Prepare a report for submittal to the Engineer which documents the testing conducted
30 on the pipe at each site, with test results referenced to each site and at each test
31 location. The documentation will present the test results of the UST including an
32 evaluation of the data from each test and an assessment of the thickness of the pipe
33 wall at each location around the pipe circumference. The draft reports should be
34 prepared on a monthly basis.
35 5. The Contractor shall also provide daily field reports to the Engineer.

11.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE
6 Supervisor’s Qualifications: The Contractor shall assign a qualified field inspection team
7 with a supervisor having a minimum of three years of experience in such work necessary to
8 successfully meet this specification and provide references for three ferrous pipe inspection
9 projects involving the UST equipment to be used on this project.
10 Equipment Calibration: The Contractor must calibrate the UST equipment to work on the
11 type of pipe to be inspected in this project. The Contractor must submit a plan for calibrating
12 the equipment on site prior to beginning the first inspection. Alternatively, the Contractor
13 must provide documentation that the equipment to be used has been calibrated on identical
14 pipe. The documentation should confirm that the equipment operator during the calibration
15 is the same operator on the project work.

1PART 3 - EXECUTION
23.1 GENERAL
10 The Contractor shall begin the inspection work within 8 hours of preparation of the pipeline
11 for inspection, including all excavation and preparation of suitable access.
13 The Contractor shall conduct an ultrasonic survey of the project ferrous pipe segments and
14 evaluate the ultrasonic data obtained to estimate the wall thickness at each location on the
15 pipe circumference at each test site.
16 The field notes from the ultrasonic survey shall clearly identify each test location around the
17 pipe perimeter and the measured wall thickness at each test location. Copies of the original
18 field notes shall be provided as part of the documentation. The field notes shall include date
19 and time, weather conditions, names of the inspection team members, and the identification
20 of the inspection site. The notes shall include the identification number (MAXNUM) of the
21 pipe segment being inspected as provided by the Owner or Engineer.
223.3 PREPARATION
23 The Contractor shall undertake all measures needed to prepare the ferrous pipelines for
24 inspection using the Contractor’s equipment. This shall include any additional cleaning of
25 the pipe exterior and any smoothing of the pipe wall as required to obtain an accurate
26 measurement.
28 The Contractor shall use OCU’s GIS numbering system and the segment identification
29 number (MAXNUM) when performing the inspections for this project, as provided by the
30 Engineer.

13.5 INSPECTION REPORT
2 The Contractor shall provide an Inspection Report to the Engineer which will include the
3 following at a minimum:
4 1. Identification of the test site by street address, intersection or easement. The report
5 shall provide the pipe segment identification numbers (MAXNUM) assigned by the
6 Engineer and the Owner as well as the date of the inspection and any other pertinent
7 information.
8 2. A description and documentation of the calibration of the ultrasonic equipment used
9 for this inspection.
10 3. A description of the inspections performed including the location along the pipe
11 perimeter of each ultrasonic inspection and the resulting wall thickness
12 measurements. This data should be presented in tabular form.
13 Five hard copies and one electronic copy of the Inspection Report shall be delivered to the
14 Engineer within 14 days of completing all inspections or testing on each pipeline segment.
15 Within two weeks of receipt of any comments from the Engineer, the Contractor shall
16 incorporate any comments and submit five hard copies and two electronic copies of the Final
17 Inspection Report to the Engineer.
