Eighteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time

Pope Francis is reminding Christian families to guard against being swept away by a hectic,
competitive throw-away society. Jesus calls us to center our work and activity in Him-the bread
of life! Make sure to make time for family meals, Sabbath rest, prayer and conversation that
includes God.
Pass the word….Do you know anyone that is interested in answering the call to become a member of
the Roman Catholic Church through RCIA? Our first inquiry night will be Monday, August 6 in the
rectory meeting room beginning at 7:00pm. Please extend a warm welcome to anyone you believe
would be interested.

My Dear Parishioners: This is my favorite Gospel from the Rite of Baptism for Children (Mk 10,
13-16) A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark. Jesus loves the children. “People
were bringing their little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples were
scolding them for this. Jesus became indignant when he noticed it and said to them: “Let the
children come to me and do not hinder them. It is to just such as these that the kingdom of God
belongs. I assure you that whoever does not accept the kingdom of God as a little child shall
not enter into it.” Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them.” The
words of Jesus are great reminders for all of us.

Next Weekend is Mission Sunday - August 11 & 12 - St. Augustine Church will
welcome Fr. Brandon Bigam the new pastor of St. Martha in Prestonsburg and its
mission of St. Luke in Salyersville, small parishes in the Appalachian region which
depends upon the generosity of many outside benefactors. Fr. Brandon is a new
priest as of 2017 and is excited about his first mission appeal. Established in 1988,
the mission Diocese of Lexington covers a 50 county area. Forty of those counties lay
within the mountain region of Appalachia where Catholics are less than 1% and are
often met with mistrust. Residents sometime lack basic services for daily living,
education and healthcare. The dioceses face daily challenges to provide resources and
personnel to effectively offer outreach ministries to this hidden population. Priest in
the area must serve multiple parishes and often travel 35-40 miles over the mountains
to celebrate weekend Masses. Ultimately, the Catholic presence in Appalachia would
diminish without the generous response from outside assistance.

Join the Women of Faith Book Club for a discussion of its next selection “Introduction to the
Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales.” Participants may select any aspect of this faith-filled
reflection for sharing with the group- the sacraments, prayer, the practice of virtues, etc. Our
meeting will be on Thursday, August 9 at 1pm in the rectory. This book has stood the test of
time to say the least- the first printing was in 1608. Come discuss the lessons we can apply
today 400 years later.

St. Augustine Men’s Fellowship will meet in the school cafeteria from 7-8:25am on Saturday, August 11.
We will continue our study of the book “The Marian Option” and we will pray a rosary for Marriage, the
Family and World Peace. All men are invited to join us. For questions call Gib Adolph at 330-848-1043 or
e-mail adolphbiz@email.com.

Will you have increased income as a result of the new tax changes? Perhaps you can
consider increasing your offertory contribution to our parish. Changes in the tax law
kept in place several popular and attractive charitable gifting options. Gifting
appreciated stock (held more than 1 year) to our parish may allow you to deduct the
stock’s full value and bypass capital gains tax. Also, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may
be able to reduce your taxable income this year with a gift made directly from your IRA
to our parish. Talk to your advisor and IRA administrator for more information and be
sure the gift is made directly from an IRA to a qualified charity such as our parish.
For questions, you are welcome to contact Mary Lou Ozimek of the Catholic
Community foundation at 216-696-6525 x4070 or via email at
