MSC 725: Quality Management and Control

COURSE OUTLINE

1. Course Description:

This course mainly describes the principles, tools and techniques of quality management & control and its practices
in organizations and how one can solve and cope up with the business situation by maintaining the quality of output
as well. For the increasing competition in the modern business world, the overall quality management has reached a
complex situation. Topics covered include contributions of quality gurus like Deming, Juran, Ishikawa and others.
Techniques of quality measurement, like process quality control, Pareto Chart, Run Chart, histogram, fishbone, JIT,
team work, house of quality configuration etc. will be discussed in depth to enhance the skill of the students.

2. Course Objectives

A. To provide students with a clear understanding of the principles, practices, tools and techniques, and
critical success factors associated with Total Quality Management and quality system.
B. To introduce students to the basic concept, quality gurus and function of TQM.
C. To explain quality circle and other quality techniques and comparison of those techniques with TQM.
D. To understand the involvement of the management of an organization in TQM and various tools and
techniques including benchmarking, QFD, SPC, JIT, TQE, etc. required in TQM.
E. To understand the need and techniques for managing TQM.

4. Course Requirements
Each student will write a term paper, which is to be submitted on due time. The length of the papers should be
sufficient to cover the subject matter in a thoughtful, comprehensive, and high quality fashion. Typically, this might
require about 8 to 10 double-spaced pages, with standard (1”) margins. The student is cautioned, however, that the
papers will be read, not weighed; and that quality will be considered of greater importance than volume in the
evaluation of the student's work.

Last date of submission of the paper is, one week before final exam

Papers submitted late will be downgraded by 25% marks for each day the paper is late.

Topics for the papers will be selected from any of the lecture topics to be covered with consultation of the
instructor.
