Artifact #5- ELED Assessment and Instruction Plan

Overview

I have included this assignment as an artifact because not only am I very proud of this

assignment, but it also shows that I have the necessary skills in literacy instruction to be able to assess and

instruct my students. For this assignment, I completed a series of tests on a grade 5 student in my sons’

classroom. I completed Interest Inventory, Elementary Spelling Inventory, High Frequency Assessment,

Running Record Level R with Comprehension quiz and finally a Running Record Level R with

Comprehension quiz. These assessment are actual assessments that are used in the classroom and I felt

very professional when I administer them to the student. Not only do these assessments prove my

readiness to teach and assess students, it shows that I have mastered the skills required to be an

elementary school teacher.

Connection to Standards

INTASC Standards

The INTASC standards are broken down into 10 standards and I would like to include

standard #9 –Professional Learning and Ethical Practice, which states, “The teacher engages in

ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice,

particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other

professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner. I

would like to include 9(a) “The teacher engages in ongoing learning opportunities to develop

knowledge and skills in order to provide all learners with engaging curriculum and learning

experiences based on local and

state standards”, as well as, 9(k) The teacher knows how to build and implement a plan for

professional growth directly aligned with his/her needs as a growing professional using feedback
from teacher evaluations and observations, data on learner performance, and school- and system

wide priorities” (InSTAC). I feel that these two standards align well with this artifact as I was in

control of building this assessment based on what tests I should administer and at what levels.

With respect to the running record, I felt that I didn’t want to discourage the student right away

so I started with a low test for her grade level and gradually built up from that.

NYS Code of Ethics for Educators

The NYS Code of Ethics for Educators is a group of standards for teachers to follow with

respect to the ethical practices of the profession. These standards include 6 principles, and for

the purpose of this artifact, I would like to include principle #6, which states, “Educators advance

the intellectual and ethical foundation of the learning community. Educators recognize the

obligations of the trust placed in them. They share the responsibility for understanding what is

known, pursuing further knowledge, contributing to the generation of knowledge, and translating

knowledge into comprehensible forms. They help students understand that knowledge is often

complex and sometimes paradoxical. Educators are confidantes, mentors and advocates for their

students’ growth and development. As models for youth and the public, they embody intellectual

honesty, diplomacy, tact and fairness” (highered). These standards fit well with my artifact as

one of the first responsibilities I have to students and their families is trust. Trust is earned in

many ways in the classroom and to show my students that learning is complex but fun will be

extremely rewarding.

Ontario Teacher Ethical Standards

The Ontario Teacher Ethical Standards are standards set out for educators to understand

the ethical standards that are required for the profession. The Ontario Teacher Ethical Standards

are built on 4 principles and for the purpose of this artifact, I would like to include the principle

of trust, which states, “The ethical standard of Trust embodies fairness, openness and honesty.

Members' professional relationships with students, colleagues, parents, guardians and the public

are based on trust” (oct). Trust is earned in the classroom and this is done so by creating and

maintaining a working relationship with students and their families.

P-12 NYS Common Core Learning Standards

These standards are very important in regards to the curriculum. These standards are

divided her grade and subject. For the purpose of this artifact, I would like to include standard

Reading Standards RF.4.4: Foundational Skills (K–5), which states:

4. Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

a. Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.

b. Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive

readings.

c. Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as

necessary.
These standards align with my running records which I completed on my student to determine

her frustration level of reading

NYS Learning Standards

The English Language Arts are broken down into 5 standards. For the purpose of this

artifact, I would like to include standard #1, which states, Standard 1: Language for Information

and Understanding Students will listen, speak, read, and write for information and understanding.

As listeners and readers, students will collect data, facts, and ideas; discover relationships,

concepts, and generalizations; and use knowledge generated from oral, written, and

electronically produced texts. As speakers and writers, they will use oral and written language

that follows the accepted conventions of the English language to acquire, interpret, apply, and

transmit information” (nysed). I have included this standard as this is the best fit for the

completion of this literacy assessment.

The Ontario Curriculum

The Ontario Curriculum is a set of standards that divides the curriculum by grade and

subject. For the purpose of this artifact, I have included Comprehension Strategies

1.3 identify a variety of reading comprehension strategies and use them appropriately before,

during, and after

reading to understand texts (e.g., activate prior knowledge through asking questions about or

discussing a topic; develop mind

maps to explore ideas; ask questions to focus reading; use visualization to clarify details of a

character, scene, or concept in

a text; make predictions about a text based on reasoning and related reading; reread to confirm or

clarify meaning)

This standard aligns directly with this assignment as it covers all the bases of the assessment s

that I did on the grade 5 student.

CAEP Standards

The CAEP standards are standards for educators who are entering the profession. These

standards are broken down into 5 standards, and for the purpose of this standard, I would like to

include 1.2 Providers ensure that candidates use research and evidence to develop an

understanding of the teaching profession and use both to measure their P-12

students’ progress and their own professional practice. This standard aligns well as it ensures

that all new candidates have an understanding to develop lessons from P-12.

ISTE Standards

The ISTE standards are broken down into 7 standards, and for the purpose of this artifact,

I would like to include standard 1, which states, “Educators continually improve their practice by

learning from and with others and exploring proven and promising practices that leverage

technology to improve student learning” (iste). This standard in particular asks that educators

improve their practice by continuous learning and the use of technology. As a Medaille student
in my last semester, I have continued to expand my learning in the areas of curriculum and

technology.

ILA Standards

The ILA standards are broken down into 7 standards and for the purpose of this artifact, I

would like to align with standard #3, assessment and evaluation. This standard states,

“Candidates understand, select, and use valid, reliable, fair, and appropriate assessment tools to

screen, diagnose, and measure student literacy achievement; inform instruction and evaluate

interventions; participate in professional learning experiences; explain assessment results and

advocate for appropriate literacy practices to relevant stakeholders” (ila). This standard aligns

with this artifact as it is an artifact full of cultivating assessments and it shows the abilities of the

student and the skills of the candidate,

Conclusion

To conclude this section of my Elementary Portfolio, I would like to list the standards

that were enclosed in this section. I have included: INSTAC standards, NYS Code of Ethics for

Educators standards, Ontario Teacher Ethical standards, P-12 Common Core Learning

Standards, NYS Learning standards, Ontario Curriculum standards, CAEP standards, ISTE

standards, ILA standards and finally CEC standards. I have aligned each artifact with these

standards and I hope that they are understood to you as they are to me
