Learning Objective 4.4 The student will expand vocabulary when reading
b) Use knowledge of roots, affixes, synonyms,
antonyms, and homophones.
 Activity This activity will be students using laptops to create a
game that they will share with their peers. For most
English classes vocabulary words are assigned for
books they are reading or vocabulary words they
need to learn. Half of the class will be assigned one
half of the vocabulary list and, then the other half will
be given the other half of the vocabulary list (this way
once they are done they will pair up with someone
and play their game). The game they are playing is
called “Connect Fours” and basically the student is
creating four synonyms that will pair with each
vocabulary word. Once the student is done, the
teacher will check to make sure everything is right
with how the student set up the game, then if
everything is correct they will be paired with a
student with a different list and the two students will
switch computers. After they switch computers they
will play each other’s game testing their knowledge of
the vocabulary words. The student will have to play
multiple times, because there are more than four
words. So the activity will be finished when the
teacher says everyone can stop or the class is over.

 Directions for Use

to open the Internet. Etc..

Before you submit, delete the explanatory text (the text in small italics).
1. Open Google Chrome or Explorer
2. Type in the URL:

3. The read the instructions and click on “Start
New Game”
4. Give your game a name next to “Title”
5. Now you can start coming up with synonyms
for your vocabulary words. For the game to
work properly you are going to have to list the
synonyms a certain way and, then add the
vocabulary word at the end.
6. In the big blank box is where you are going to
make the game. Above the box there are two
things that will help you while making it one
says help and one says example. These will
help you type everything correctly so the
game works.
7. Once you have came up with your synonyms
you are going to type all of them in back to
back with no spaces and an asterisk* at the
end of each word. So it should look like this
“done*finish*ended*finalized*”
8. After that you need to add the vocabulary
word you were doing the synonyms for in ALL
CAPS. It should look like this
“done*finish*ended*finalized*COMPLETE”
9. After you are finished with one, you then hit
enter on your keyboard and start the process
over again.
10. Once you have finished you hit submit which
is underneath the box you typed everything in
and your game is complete.
