will not be an exhaustive study of any book of the Bible. In fact, the
orientation to any particular book usually will be just sufficient to establish
the context for the promise, as we find it. The focus, therefore, will be on the promise itself and how it
speaks into particular circumstances. Most important, we will consider how the promise speaks into our
circumstances. How does God’s promise of presence change us and the way we live? If we believe the
“word of God is living and active” (Heb. 4:12), then we must let it live and act.
