ABSTRACT
Background: Propionibacterium acnes is a gram-positive bacteria, pleomorphic bacilli and anaerobic to the
aerotolerant which plays a role in the occurrence of Acne vulgaris that causes chronic inflammation in the
pilosebasea unit. Many plants that have potential as an antibacterial and not yet well utilized namely noni seed
(Morinda citrifolia L.). Research Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the content of secondary metabolite
compounds and inhibitory power of ethanol extract of noni seeds on the growth of Propionibacterium acnes
causes acne vulgaris. Research Method: This research used post test only control design with free variable was
ethanol extract of seed and dependent variable was inhibition zone of bacterial growth. Extraction was
performed using reflux method. The content of secondary metabolites was done by qualitative phytochemical
test and the inhibitory test of ethanol extract of noni seed was done by the method of paper disc diffusion by
observing the formation of clear zone. Research Result: The content of secondary metabolite compounds in
noni seeds was known to be a class of alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, tannins and saponins. The extract of
ethanol of noni seeds has the resistance to growth of Propionibacterium acnes was shown at 100%
concentration with 11.75 mm large, while at concentrations of 75%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, and 6.25% there was
not clear zones founded around the paper disc. Conclution: The conclusions of this study were the extract of
noni seed (Morinda citrifolia L.) possessing low inhibitory on growth of Propionibacterium acnes but did not
have Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bacteriasidal concentration (MBC) content of the
tested concentration.
