explain it
- what do you think a disciple looks like?

HOW DID JESUS START
TO MAKE DISCIPLES?
Jesus knows who he is.
Knows his task, to save the world.
It is hard and challenging—has there ever been
a harder task?
Where should he start, what should
he do?

John 1
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him and said, ‘Look, the
Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I
meant when I said, “A man who comes after me has surpassed me because
he was before me.” 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came
baptising with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.’
32 Then John gave this testimony: ‘I saw the Spirit come down from heaven
as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the
one who sent me to baptise with water told me, “The man on whom you
see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptise with the
Holy Spirit.” 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.’[f]
The first thing we see is he got baptised
by John The Baptist (JTB).
JTB had come when Israel was empty,
longing for God.
He started to speak the Word of God
into the hearts of desperate people
Jesus goes to John, he needs to identify
with the people he is here to save.
JTB recognises Jesus and the process
begins…
John 1:29, 36
John saw Jesus and said, ‘Look, the
Lamb of God, who takes away the sin
of the world!…37 When the two
disciples heard him say this, they
followed Jesus.
WHY?
What are you hungry for?
JTB had created in them a
hunger for Messiah—and
when Messiah came, they
followed because they saw
an answer to their hunger.
JTB had prepared people for what was to come
—his ministry had produced a sense of
expectancy, Messiah was coming.
People were getting their lives ready for God to
move again!
Preparation is
important in disciple
making.
In disciple making this time is like seeds of
commitment are starting to germinate, but
nothing can be seen yet.
Are you watching what God is doing?
John 1:37 When the two disciples heard him say
this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning round, Jesus saw
them following and asked, ‘What do you want?’
They said, ‘Rabbi’ (which means ‘Teacher’), ‘where
are you staying?’
39 ‘Come,’ he replied, ‘and you will see.’
So they went and saw where he was staying, and
they spent that day with him
Encourage questions and thinking
Don’t intimidate people
Allow discussion (carefully direct it)
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the
two who heard what John had said and who had
followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to
find his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found
the Messiah’ (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought
him to Jesus.
Andrew,
listens to
Jesus and
then…
Jesus looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of
John. You will be called Cephas’ (which, when
translated, is Peter.
What do you know of Peter’s
personality (from the Bible)?
What do you think Jesus saw in Peter?

Jesus observed people and then dealt with
each personality in a different way:
Peter - a bold prophetic word
Nathanael - proof of his supernatural
gifting, “I saw you…”
Jesus is adaptable.
He speaks to people wherever they are
and seems to understand, with sensitivity
and divine insight, how to communicate
with them.
John 1:49 Then Nathanael declared, ‘Rabbi, you
are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.’
50 Jesus said, ‘You believe because I told you I
saw you under the fig-tree.You will see greater
things than that…you will see “heaven open, and
the angels of God ascending and descending on”
the Son of Man.’
Jesus left them all on a
note of curiosity…you
haven’t seen
anything yet!
Jesus saw the way to save
people, to bring humanity
back to God was people
—not programmes!
E. M. Bounds
“God’s plan is to make much of the
man, far more of him than of
anything else. Men are God’s method.
The church is looking for better
methods: God is looking for better
men.”
Most pastors believe in
people-oriented way of
working in church and
ministry—few are willing
to actually do it in the
way that Jesus did.
Do you want to take the risk and
time to invest in the lives of people?
Every Christian needs to take time to select
a few people and to spend time teaching
them the basics, such as Bible study, prayer,
outreach, and various ministry skills.
Do you show a good example?
Discipleship does not use
emotional sermons, or music
to get people to follow.
The Holy Spirit must grip the
persons heart and mind and
to draw them on.
SUMMARY:
HOW DID JESUS START TO
MAKE DISCIPLES?
Jesus started his
ministry with a simple
invitation: “Come and
see.”
In the first four-month
period, he allowed people
to observe who he was
and to learn what he
planned to do.
He answered their
questions at length.
Even though he was the
Messiah, he did not force
himself on the people of
Israel.
