1. A simply supported beam 4 m long has the cross section shown in Fig. 1. It carries a
uniformly distributed load of 20 kN/m over the middle half of the span.
Calculate the maximum shear and bending stresses if the cross-sectional area is an I-
beam with a flange width of 300mm, a flange thickness of 12mm, a web thickness of
10mm and a web height of 500mm.
2. A beam is simply supported at the left end and at 3 meters from its right end. The total
length of the beam is 10 m and it carries a uniformly distributed load of 10 KN/m at its
overhanging part. It also carries a concentrated load of 100KN located 3.5 m from its left
support. Determine the maximum shear and bending stresses if the cross-sectional area
is an I-beam with a flange width of 300mm, a flange thickness of 12mm, a web thickness
of 10mm and a web height of 500mm.
3. A beam having a capacity of 10 MPa for Bending and 3 MPa for shear stress has the
following dimensions: a flange width of 300mm, a flange thickness of 12mm, a web
thickness of 10mm and a web height of 500mm and a beam span of 10m. Determine:
a.) the maximum distributed load that can be applied to its entire span.
b.) the maximum value of 3 equally spaced concentrated loads of the same magnitude
applied.
