Every year we look fondly ahead to the approaching month of Ramadan.
A month to come closer to our Rab! A month to reflect and ponder upon the
Qur’an. A month of increasing good deeds. A month of forgiveness.

We delight in the blessings and bounty this month offers, and with great
eagerness we begin each Ramadan wanting it to be more fulfilling than the
last! But despite our initial excitement and good intentions, how many of us
fall short of what we hoped to achieve? How many of us complete the month,
regretting we did not do more, or fail to continue the high momentum after the
month has ended?

The purpose of this journal is to aid our connection with this month
bi’ithnilllah. To help us recognise and throw away the excuses which have
held us back in previous years, so that we can reach and appreciate the true
benefits of this approaching Ramadan, inshallah.

Packed with reminders from the Qur’an and hadith, as well as advices from
the Scholars taken from reputable online sources, carefully put together to
help you to plan your goals and prepare to defeat your excuses inshallah!

You will find the Journal divided into three sections:

All the Hamd is for Allah for His Bounty and Beneficence. He has favored us by
allowing us to reach the month of Ramadan and established for us therein from
righteous actions which bring us closer to Him. May the prayers and peace be upon our
Prophet Muhammad, the first to proceed in good actions, and upon his family, and
companions, who have believed in him, helped him, aided him and followed the light with
which he was sent. They are the successful. As to what follows:

I advise you and myself to have Taqwaa of Allah within this blessed month and other
than it from the months. However, this month has a status with which Allah has
particularized it, for it is a season of good actions. It has been narrated that he
(sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to invoke Allah for the reaching of Ramadan. So he
would say when he entered the month of Rajab: “O Allah bless us in Rajab and Sha’baan;
and let us reach Ramadan.”(Bayhaqee and others. Al-Albaanee declared it to be weak.)

It has also been narrated that he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would give his
companions glad tidings of its approach and clarify to them its virtues; saying: “O
people, a great and blessed month has come upon you.”[On the authority of Aboo
Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu
alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘Ramadan has come upon you, a blessed month. Allah the Mighty
and Majestic has obligated upon you its fast. The doors of the heaven are opened
therein and the doors of the Hellfire are shut and the rebellious devils are chained up.
Allah has a night therein which is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of
its good is truly deprived.”](Ahmad and others)

He would urge his companions to strive hard therein with righteous action, from the
obligatory and the supererogatory; from the prayers and the charity; and striving in
goodness and ihsaan; and patience upon obedience of Allah; spending its day with the
fast, its night with standing in prayer and its hours with reciting the Qur’aan and
remembering Allah ‘Azz wa Jal.
8
So do not squander it with heedlessness and aversion, as is the case of the wretched
ones who have forgotten Allah so He caused them to forget themselves. So they do not
benefit from the passing of the time of good nor do they recognize its sanctity. And they
do not give it its just due.

Many of the people do not recognize this month except as a month for alteration of the
eating and drinking; so they exaggerate in giving their souls what they desire and they
frequently purchase luxury items of foods and drinks; and it is known that abundance of
eating and drinking makes one lazy from doing actions of obedience. That which is
required of the Muslim is that he eats and drinks little so that he will be active upon
obedience.

Some of the people do not recognize the month of Ramadan except as a month of sleep
during the day and wakefulness during the night upon that which is of no benefit or that
which is actually harmful. So he stays awake most of the night or all of it, then he sleeps
during the day even (neglecting) the obligatory prayers; so he does not pray with the
Jamaa’ah nor in the times of the prayers.

Some of the people sit at the table for Iftaar, abandoning salatul-Magrib with the
Jamaa’ah.

These groups from amongst do the forbidden acts and with regards to this group, they
do not recognize the month of Ramadan except as a month for trade, laying out the
commodities and seeking after the fleeting dunyaa. So they are active in buying and
selling so that they cling to the marketplaces the people do not know the worth of the
month of Ramadan nor do they refrain from violating its sanctity, they are vigilant upon
the Haraam and they abandon the obligations. They and they make hijrah from the
masaajid. And if they go to the masaajid, they are in a hurry and reluctant, they do not
stay therein; because the coolness of their eyes is in the marketplaces.

Another group from the people does not recognize the month of Ramadan except as a
time for begging in the masaajid and in the streets. So that one passes most of his time
going and returning; travelling here and there and moving from land to land to gather
wealth by begging. He makes himself look as if he is in need while he is actually rich; and
as if he has an ailment in his body while he is actually healthy. He denies Allah’s
blessing upon him of richness and health, and takes the wealth without due right. He
wastes his valuable time in that which is harmful to him so nothing remains of virtue for
Ramadan with these groups.
9
Slaves of Allah, Allah’s Messenger(sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)would strive hard in this
month more than he would strive in other months; and he, upon him be prayers and
peace, would be serious in al-‘Ibaadah during all of its times. He would remove himself
in this month from most distractions which are in actuality worship, but he would remove
himself from the virtuous acts for that which was more virtuous than it. And the Salafus-
Saalih would follow his example in that and would particularize this month with an
abundance of importance and they would dedicate themselves therein to righteous
actions. They would spend its night in Tahajjud and its day in fasting, remembrance and
recitation of the Qur’aan. They would spend time in the masaajid with that; so let us
compare our affair to their affair and what is the extent of our knowledge with this month.
And let us know that just as the good deeds are multiplied therein, the sins committed
therein are likewise and their punishment is increased. So let us fear Allah the Glorified
and honor His sacred things: “And whoever honors the sacred things of Allah that is
better for him with his Lord.” (Al-Hajj 22:30)

May Allah grant success for all righteous statements and actions, and may Allah send
prayers and peace upon our prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

َ ُ‫ين ِمن قَ ۡبلِڪُمۡ لَ َعلَّ ُكمۡ تَتَّق‬

O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting)[] is prescribed for you as it was
prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqûn

Surah al-Baqarah 2:183

Al-Immam ‘Abdur-Rahman as-Sa’dee: Then Allah the Mpst High mentions His wisdom
َ ُ‫تَتَّق‬
behind the legislation of siyaam, so He said: ‫ون‬ ۡ‫لَ َعلَّ ُكم‬ for indeed as-siyaam is from
the greatest reasons for Taqwa, because in (fasting) is acting by what Allah commanded
and abstaining and abandoning what He prohibited and forbade.

So from what it contains from Taqwa: is that the saa’im (the person who is fasting) leaves
off what Allah forbade him from, from eating and drinking and sexual relations and the
like of that, which his desires lean towards, seeking to get closer to Allah by that, hoping
for His reward by abandoning them. So this is from Taqwa.

And from it: is that the saa’im trains himself upon the observation of Allah the Most
High. So he abandons what his desires want, along with his ability for it, due to his
knowledge of Allah seeing him and His watching him.

And from it: is that the saa’im restricts the avenues of shaytaan, because indeed he runs
through the son of Aadam like blood. So with fasting, he weakens his power and
influence, and the sins he falls into become less.

And from it: is that the saa’im normally increases his worship and acts of obedience, and
the acts of obedience are from the characteristics of Taqwa.

And from it: is that the ghanee (the one who is rich), when he experiences the pain of
hunger, that obligates for him feeling sympathy towards the poor and destitute, and this
is from the characteristics of Taqwa.

It is reported that on the first night of Ramadân, ‘Umar – Allâh be pleased with him –
would pray Maghrib, then say (to the people):

Sit down. Then he would give a small address: Verily the fasting of this month has been
made a duty upon you, and standing in night prayer has not been made a duty upon
you, but those amongst you who can stand in prayer should do so, for it is from the
extra good deeds about which Allâh told us: so whoever cannot stand in prayer, let him
sleep on his bed.

And beware of saying: I will fast if so and so fasts and I will stand in night prayer if so
and so stands in prayer. Whoever fasts or stands in night prayer, he must make this for
Allâh. And you should know that you are in prayer as long as you are waiting for a
prayer.

Minimize any vain or false speech in the houses of Allâh (mosques; he said this two or
three times). Let none of you fast a few days before the month (in order to avoid missing
the beginning of the month; he said this three times). And do not fast until you see [the
crescent of the new month] unless it is overcast. If it is overcast, count [the previous
month as 30 days. Then do not break your fasts until you see the night upon the
mountain (i.e. you are sure the sun has set).

Question:

What are the most important means that will assist the woman upon obedience during
the month of Ramadan?

Answer:

The means that will assist the Muslim upon obedience to Allah whether they are male or
female are as follows.

1. Fear of Allah ‫سبحانه وتعالى‬and to believe that He is observing the creation in all of their
actions, and statements, and intentions and that He will take them to account for all of
that. Therefore if the person is cognizant of this reality then he will busy himself with the
obedience of Allah and leave off sins and he will hasten to repent from his wrongdoings.

2. Increase in the remembrance of Allah and the recitation of the Quran because this will
soften the heart. Allah the Exalted said, (what can be translated as) ‘Those who believe,
and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah: for without doubt in the
remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction’. (Chapter 13 verse 28) And Allah the
Exalted said, (what can be translated as) ‘The believers are those who, when Allah is
mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts’. (Chapter 8 verse 2)

22
3. Avoiding the distractions that harden the heart and distance the individual from Allah,
and this is every sin and mixing with evil people and eating from the impermissible and
being heedless of the remembrance of Allah the Exalted, and watching the evil films.

4. The woman remaining in her home and not leaving her home except due to a need and
then returning quickly to her home upon completion of her need.

5. Sleeping during the night because this will assist the person in waking up during the
last part of the night. And sleep a little during the day, this will allow the person to
perform their prayers in their respective times, and to busy their time with the obedience
of Allah.

6. Guarding their tongues from backbiting and tale carrying and he said she said,
bearing false witness and impermissible speech, but rather they should busy their
tongue with the remembrance of Allah.

Introduction

My brothers, a precious month and a great time is upon us. During it, Allah increases
rewards and bestows gifts in abundance. He opens the doors to goodness for whoever
wishes for it. It is the month of benefits and blessings, the month of endowment and gifts.

Sūrah al-Baqarah, 2:185

From the virtues of fasting is that Allah has prescribed it for all nations and has made it
a commandment upon them. He ( ‫ ) تعالى‬said:

24
Sūrah al-Baqarah, 2:183

If fasting were not such a great form of worship and essential deed by which to worship
Allah and connected with such great rewards, Allah would not have made it an
obligation upon all people, past and present.

The First Ḥadīth

One of the benefits of fasting in Ramadan is that it is a means by which sins are
forgiven and bad deeds are expiated. In the two authentic collections of ḥadīth (Sahih al-
Bukhari and Sahih Muslim), Abū Hurayrah (‫ ) رضي هللا عنه‬said that the prophet (‫) صلى هللا عليه و سلم‬
said:

This means that the person fasts out of true belief in Allah, being pleased with the
obligation of fasting that Allah has placed on him and hoping for Allah’s reward. The
person should not hate his obligation or doubt his reward. So if his belief and hope is
correct, then Allah will surely forgive whatever sins he may have made in the past.
And in Sahih Muslim, there is a ḥadīth in which Abū Hurayrah (‫ )رضي هللا عنه‬narrated
that the prophet (‫ )صلى هللا عليه و سلم‬said:

25
The Second Ḥadīth

Abū Hurayrah (‫ )رضي هللا عنه‬said that he heard the messenger of Allah (‫) صلى هللا عليه و سلم‬
say:

» It is for me « Of all the deeds a person may do, Allah has specifically chosen for
himself and connected himself to fasting. He did so because of a certain honour he holds
for fasting and a certain love he has for it. When a person fasts, his genuine sincerity is
made apparent to Allah because fasting in itself is a secret between a worshipper and
his lord; no one other than Allah is aware of it. When someone who is fasting is in a
place away from others, it is possible for him to eat or drink which Allah has made
forbidden to him. However, he does not do so because he knows he has a lord who is
aware of everything he does, even when he is alone, and he knows Allah has forbidden
him from eating and drinking at that time. So he prevents himself from eating and
drinking only for Allah, fearing his punishment and hoping for his reward. And for that,
Allah thanks him for his genuine sincerity and specifically chooses his fasting for
himself from all the other deeds a person may do. About this, Allah says in another
ḥadīth:

The virtue of Allah especially choosing fasting will also be made apparent on the Day of
Resurrection, Sufyān Ibn ‘Uyaynah said:

26
» and I will personally reward it « As Allah has connected fasting to himself, he has also
generously connected its reward to himself. Good deeds have their rewards multiplied in
number: one reward is multiplied by ten to seven hundred times or even more.
However, with fasting, Allah has associated its reward with himself without specifying a
certain number. And remember, he is the most giving and the most generous and a gift is
only as good as its giver. So the reward given to a fasting person is certainly great and
without limit.
Fasting also includes all three types of patience: having patience upon obedience to
Allah, having patience while staying away from what Allah has forbidden, and having
patience with the natural decree of Allah such as the pain one feels from hunger, thirst,
and fatigue. So fasting contains all of those three types of patience and those who fast
are truly considered the patient ones, Allah ( ‫ ) تعالى‬says:

The Third Ḥadīth

Ḥudhayfah (‫ ) رضي هللا عنه‬said that Allah’s messenger (‫ )صلى هللا عليه و سلم‬said:

» Fasting is a means of protection « meaning it is a defence or shield that the fasting

person uses to protect himself from saying useless, obscene, or rude things. For this,
the prophet (‫ )صلى هللا عليه و سلم‬said, “The person should not speak badly or act rudely.”
And fasting also protects a person from the fire; Imam Ahmad narrates a ḥadīth in which
the prophet (‫ )صلى هللا عليه و سلم‬is reported to have said, “Fasting is a means of protection
by which the worshipper is protected from the Fire.”

27
» And if someone fights him or insults him, let him say, “I am fasting, I am fasting.” « Also
in this ḥadīth, the fasting person is instructed that if someone insults him or tries to fight
with him, he is not to confront the aggressor in the same manner so as not to encourage
the insulting and fighting and thus prevent it from intensifying. And so that the fasting
person does not seem weak or cowardly by simply remaining silent, he is instructed to
tell the person that he is fasting as an indication that he refuses to confront the
aggressor in the same manner out of respect for his own fast, not out of weakness or
inability to stand up and retaliate. In this way, the arguing, insulting, and fighting may
stop. Allah says:

Sūrah Fuṣṣilat, 41:34-35.

» The smell of a fasting person’s mouth is better to Allah than the scent of perfume. « The
Arabic word used here (khulūf) refers to the change in smell in the mouth when the
stomach is empty. It is a disgusting smell in the sight of people yet in the sight of Allah, it
is better than the fragrant scent of perfume because it originates from the worship of
Allah and obedience to him. And anything that results from worshipping Allah and
obeying him is beloved to him, and he will give the worshipper in exchange something
that is better and more pleasant.

So the breath of a fasting person’s mouth is better to Allah than the smell of perfume
because it is a sign of fasting. It is pleasant to Allah and he loves it. This also confirms
the great status fasting has with Allah in that something hateful and disgusting to people
becomes beloved and pleasant to Allah because it originates from a person’s obedience
to Allah by fasting.

28
The Fourth Ḥadīth

Abū Hurayrah (‫ )رضي هللا عنه‬said that he heard the messenger of Allah (‫)صلى هللا عليه و سلم‬
say:

As for a person’s happiness at the time of breaking his fast, he is happy that Allah has
blessed him with the completion of fasting that day as a means of worship since fasting
is one of the best deeds a person can do. How many people were prevented for whatever
reasons and were unable to fast that day? Also, the person is naturally happy with what
Allah has now made permissible for him of food, drinks, and intimate relations that were
earlier forbidden for him during his fast.
As for a person’s happiness at the time he meets his lord, he is happy with his fast when
he finds its reward, saved in full for him, with Allah at a time when the person needs it
most, a time when it will be said:

My brothers, reaching the month of Ramadan is a great reward in itself for those who do
so and sincerely take advantage of it by returning to their lord: returning from
disobeying him to obeying him, from forgetting him to remembering him, and from
distancing themselves from him to repenting and turning to him.

Oh Allah, wake us from the sleep of negligence, grant us an increase in awareness of

you before it is too late, bless us with the ability to take advantage of our time in what
benefits us for our appointed time, and forgive us, our parents, and all Muslims by your
mercy, for you are the most merciful of the merciful. And may the prayers and peace of
Allah be upon our prophet Muhammad and upon his family and companions.

How often do we hear ourselves say that there is just simply not enough time in the day!
Our roles as daughters, sisters, wives and mothers ensure we have many responsibilities
to fill. Plus, some of us may work on top of all of that!

Many of us would love to have more time to spend with the Qur’an! We would love to
have more time in Salaah connecting with our Rabb! We would love to fit in more time
listening to the advice of the Scholars and reading their books!

But with the busy lives we lead, there really is not enough time in the day to do as much
as we would like to and still fulfil our worldly duties….right?

Well, we might surprise ourselves with just how much time we really do have, if we are
willing to be completely honest with ourselves when looking at exactly how we do spend
our days.

The following pages have been designed to help you take a real outsiders look at how
you spend your time over a whole week, and it is very simple!

All you need to do, is take a note of everything you do throughout each day, from the
moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed at night. Everything needs to be
accounted for including the exact time spent on each activity! Whether it’s a 15 minute sit
down with a cuppa and some lunch, half an hour playing with your toddler, or 2 hours
cleaning the kitchen cupboards…everything needs to be accounted for!

In order for you to find benefit to this, you must promise to be absolutely honest with
yourself, and don’t do anything differently than what you normally would do – continue
do what you would naturally do each day inshallah.

By doing this, you will be able to sit back at the end to really see how you are spending
your time, and if you are really putting it to its best possible use bi’ithnilllah!

Now, take a look at your past week’s use of time. Can you identify areas of
procrastination? Have you spent every moment of your days wisely?

Can you spot times in the day where you do actually have gaps that could be filled with
something more productive and beneficial such as reading the Qur’an or studying, even
if it’s only 15 minutes here and there?
Can you see how you could re-arrange some of your activities so that free time can be
created, just by better managing what you do?

Use this section to think about how you spend your time and what you tend to choose to
do with it.
Start thinking about what and how you can improve the management of your days, and
where you can make time for beneficial activities, such as reading Qur’an, spending
longer in salaah, sitting with the children to go through a beneficial book etc.

Perhaps you can find extra time by waking up 30 minutes before everyone else? Maybe
use 2 separate 15 minute free slots throughout the day to sit with the Qur’an? See what
you can make possible by managing your time and activities more effectively inshallah!

Question:
I have some questions; the first question: what was the state of the Salaf As-Saalih, may
Allaah have mercy upon them and be pleased with them, in anticipation of this great
month? How was their guidance? How was their character and their conduct? The
second matter, O eminent Shaykh, how does the Muslim prepare to take advantage of
these nights and days which he is now living in; preparation by way of knowledge, by
knowing the rulings of fasting and knowing the nullifiers of the fast and its rulings?
Some of the people are heedless of these things so they do not understand the affair of
fasting and they also do not have the obligatory understanding of the affair of the fast,
has the Shaykh noticed this matter? May Allaah reward you.

Answer:
In the name of Allaah the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Wa Alaykum As-Salaam
wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh; may Allaah bless you. Regarding that which you have
drawn attention to, from these two great matters; the first question is regarding the
condition of the Salaf in the month of Ramadhaan. The condition of the Salaf, as it is
recorded in the narrated books with chains of narrations from the trustworthy people
(narrating) from them is that they would ask Allaah the Mighty and Majestic to make them
reach Ramadhaan before it entered; they would ask Allaah to make them reach the
month of Ramadhaan due to what they knew that it contained from abundant good and
general benefit. Then, when Ramadhaan entered, they would ask Allaah to aid them upon
righteous actions therein. The when Ramadhaan ended they would ask Allaah to accept
it from them. As Allaah the Mighty and Majestic says:
40
ُ ِ ‫ك‬
َ ‫ئ‬
ِ َ ‫ل‬‫و‬ُ‫أ‬
ِ
And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds)
with their hearts full of fear (whether their alms and charities, etc., have been accepted or
not), because they are sure to return to their Lord (for reckoning). It is these who race
for the good deeds, and they are foremost in them [e.g. offering the compulsory Salât
(prayers) in their (early) stated, fixed times and so on]
Al-Mu’minun 23:60-61

They would strive hard in doing actions, then worry would afflict them, after the action,
as to whether their action was accepted or not. That was due to their knowledge of the
greatness of Allaah and their knowledge that Allaah does not accept except that (action)
which is done purely for His face and correctly in accordance with the Sunnah of His
Messenger from actions. So they would not purify themselves, and they would fear that
their actions would be rendered null. So (worry) that they (the action) will be accepted
was weightier with them than (even) the performance of them. This is because Allaah the
Mighty and Majestic says:

َ ِ‫ِال ُم هتق‬
ِ‫ين‬ ‫إِ هن َماِ َي َت َق هبل ه‬
ْ ‫َُِّللاُِ ِم َن‬
Verily, Allaah accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious).
Al-Ma’idah 5:27

So they would devote their time within this month, as we have previously mentioned, to
worship and would minimize actions of the Dunyaa. They would spend their time sitting
in the houses of Allaah the Mighty and Majestic and they would say: We are
safeguarding our fast and we will not backbite anyone. They would read the Mus-hafs
and study the Book of Allaah the Mighty and Majestic. They would safeguard its time
from squandering. They were not heedless or negligent as many of the people are today.
Rather, they would preserve its time; the night, by standing (in prayer) and the day by
fasting, recitation of the Qur’aan, the remembrance of Allaah, and righteous actions.
They were not negligent therein of (even) a minute or a second, except that they would
put forth therein righteous actions. This is the first question.

Aa’ishah (raa) said:

This hadeeth is proof that the last ten days of Ramadaan have a special virtue over any
other (set of days), in which one should increase in obedience and acts of worship, such
as prayer, making dhikr (remembrance) and reciting the Qur’aan.

‘Aa’ishah (raa) has described our Prophet and role model, Muhammad (Sallallaahu
‘alaihi wa Sallam), with four attributes:

1. He (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) would “spend his night in worship”, meaning he

would not sleep during it. Thus, he (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) would remain awake
throughout it in worship and he would liven his soul by spending the night in
sleeplessness. This is since sleep is the brother of death. The meaning of “spend his
night” is that he (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) would spend all of it in the state of
qiyaam (night prayer) and performing acts of worship that are done for the sake of
Allaah, Lord of the worlds. We must remember that the last ten days of Ramadaan are
fixed and numbered.

As for what has been reported concerning the forbiddance of spending the entire night
in prayer, which has been mentioned in the hadeeth of ‘Abdullaah Ibn ‘Amr (raa), then it
is in regards to someone who does that consistently throughout every night of the year.

42
2. He (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) would “wake up his family” meaning his (Sallallaahu
‘alaihi wa Sallam) pure wives, the Mothers of the Believers, so that they may take part in
the profiting of good, the dhikr (remembrance) and the acts of worship during these
blessed times.

3. He (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) would “exert himself”, meaning he (Sallallaahu

‘alaihi wa Sallam) would persevere and struggle in worship, adding more to his deeds
than what he had done in the first twenty days (of Ramadaan). He only did this because
the night of Al-Qadr occurs during one of these (last ten) days.

4. He (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) would “tighten his Izaar (waistcloth)” meaning he

would exert himself and struggle intensely in worship. It is also said that it means he
(Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) would withdraw from women. This seems to be more
correct since it inclines with what was mentioned previously and with the hadeeth of
Anas (raa): “He (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) would rollup his bed and withdraw from
women (i.e. his wives).” [2]

Also, he (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) would observe ‘Itikaaf in the last ten days of
Ramadaan and the person who is in the state of ‘Itikaaf is restricted from interacting
(sexually) with women.

So, O Muslim brother, strive to characterize yourself with these attributes. And guard the
prayer you make in the depths of the night (tahajjud) with the Imaam in addition to the
Taraaweeh prayer (which is prayed in the early parts of the night), so that your exertion
in these last ten days may go beyond that of the first twenty. And so that you may
achieve the attribute of “spending the night in worship” by praying.

And you must be patient in your obedience to Allaah, for indeed, the tahajjud (night)
prayer is difficult, but its reward is great. By Allaah, it is a great opportunity in ones life
and a profitable thing to take advantage of, for the one whom Allaah grants it to. And a
person does not know if perhaps he will encounter one of Allaah’s many rewards during
the night prayer, thus serving as assistance for him in this world and in the Hereafter.

The righteous predecessors of this ummah would lengthen the prayer at night, exerting
themselves. As-Saa’ib Ibn Yazeed said: “‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab ordered Ubay Bin Ka’ab
and Tameem Ad-Daaree to lead the people in prayer with eleven raka’aat. The reciter
would recite one hundred verses, to the point that we had to lean upon wooden staffs
due to the long standing. And we would not stop until the early parts of Fajr.”

43
1.
2.

Abdullaah Ibn Abee Bakr reported: “I heard my father (i.e. Abu Bakr) say: ‘During
Ramadaan, we would finish (the night prayer) late and we would hurry the servants to
present the food (of suhoor) for fear that Fajr (morning) would come upon us.” [4]

There are two struggles of the soul that the believer faces during Ramadaan: the struggle
by day with fasting and the struggle by night with qiyaam (night prayer). So whosoever
combines these two and fulfills their rights, then he is amongst the patient — those who
will “be given their reward in full without any reckoning.” [5]

These ten days are the last part of the month and a person’s actions are based on his
last ones. So perhaps, he will encounter the night of Al-Qadr, while standing in prayer
for Allaah and thus have all his past sins forgiven.

And one must incite, animate and persuade his family to perform acts of worship,
especially in these great times in which no one neglects it except that he has been
deprived. What is more incredible than this is that while the people are performing
prayer and making tahajjud, some individuals spend their time in forbidden gatherings
and sinful events. This is indeed the greatest loss. We ask Allaah for his protection.

Therefore, embarking on these last days means entering into the profiting from righteous
deeds in what remains of the month. From the unfortunate matters is to see that some
people excel in righteous actions, such as prayer and recitation of the Qur’aan, in the
first part of the month, but then signs of fatigue and weariness begin to show on them
afterwards, especially when the last ten days of Ramadaan come in. And this is in spite
of these last ten days possessing a greater standing than the first ones. Thus, one must
persevere in striving and struggling and increase his worship when the end of the month
draws near. And we must keep in mind that a person’s actions are based on his last
ones.

Abu Umaamah (raa) reported that the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) said:

This hadeeth indicates the virtues of reciting the Qur’aan, the greatness of its reward and
that it will intercede for its holders on the Day of Judgement towards their entrance into
Paradise.

An-Nawaas Ibn Sama’aan (raa) reported: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu
‘alaihi wa Sallam) say: ‘The Qur’aan will be brought on the Day of Judgement as well as
the people who used to act upon it. Surat-ul-Baqarah and Aali ‘Imraan will then
approach them.’ The Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) likened them to
three examples, which I have not forgotten afterwards. He (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam)
said: ‘As if they were two clouds or two dark black canopies with light between them both
or like two flocks of birds stretching their wings in the air pleading for the one who
recited them.’”

‘Abdullaah Ibn ‘Amr (raa) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa
Sallam) said: “The fast and the Qur’aan will intercede for the servant on the Day of
Judgement. The fast will say: ‘My Lord, I restricted him from food and drink, so allow me
to intercede for him.’ And the Qur’aan will say: ‘I prevented him from sleeping at night, so
allow me to intercede for him.’ So they will be allowed to intercede.”

Therefore, it is essential for the person fasting to recite the Qur’aan much during these
blessed days and honorable nights. For indeed, there is a special virtue for the
abundance of recitation in these days, which is not found in any other month. He should
take advantage of the nobleness of time during this month, in which Allaah revealed the
Qur’aan.

There is a special merit to reciting the Qur’aan in the nights of Ramadaan. For indeed,
the night brings an end to the busy daily affairs, the enthusiasm is roused and the heart
and the tongue mount upon reflecting. And Allaah is the one in whom we seek
assistance.

It is reported that Jibreel used to meet with the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam)
during each night of Ramadaan and they would study the Qur’aan together. [4] So if
making thikr (remembrance of Allaah) were better than the Qur’aan or equal to it (on
these nights), they would have done that all the time or at certain times along with
constantly gathering for that occasion.
Thus, this hadeeth illustrates the precedence of studying the Qur’aan during Ramadaan
and gathering together for that occasion as well as turning towards one who is more
prominent in the memorization of it.

The predecessors of this ummah would recite the Qur’aan constantly during Ramadaan.
And when they would fast, they would sit in the masaajid and say: “We will guard our
fast and not backbite anyone.”
They would recite the Qur’aan in their prayer and out of it. ‘Uthmaan (raa) would
complete the recitation of the (whole) Qur’aan once a day. And some of the Salaf would
complete it during their qiyaam in Ramadaan every three nights. Some of them would do
it every seven days and some every ten days.
Ash-Shaafi’ee would complete the Qur’aan sixty times during Ramadaan, while reciting it
outside of prayer. Al-Aswad would recite the whole Qur’aan every two nights of
Ramadaan. Qataadah would always compete the Qur’aan every seven days. He would do
it every three days in Ramadaan, and during the last ten days, he would do it every
night. Their reports concerning that are famous.

Al-Haafidh Ibn Rajab (rahimahullaah) said: “The forbiddance of reciting the Qur’aan in
less than three days (as stated in a hadeeth) has only been mentioned in regards to its
being done on a normal basis. As for the specific times that are virtuous, such as the
month of Ramadaan and especially the nights in which the night of Al-Qadr is sought. Or

46
those places that are virtuous, such as Makkah for the one who enters it without residing
there, then it is recommended to recite the Qur’aan a lot in these times and places,
seeking the merits connected with their time and place. This is the opinion of Ahmad,
Abu Ishaaq and other scholars. And the actions of others indicate that as has been
stated previously.”
The person reciting the Qur’aan must observe the proper etiquettes of recitation. Some
of them are that: He make his intention sincerely for Allaah, that he recite it whilst being
in a state of purity, that he use the Siwaak and that he recite it while pondering on its
meaning and observing total consciousness. Allaah says:
“A Book, which We have revealed to you in order that its verses may be pondered upon,
so that the people of understanding may be reminded.”

Also, from the etiquettes of the recitation is that one does not stop his reciting in order
to speak to someone else. Indeed, when many people sit to recite the Qur’aan, and there
are people sitting next to them, a majority of the time, they stop their recitation and
speak to their neighbors. This is not proper since it is turning away from the recitation
without a valid reason.
And it is on the one who recites, to act upon the Qur’aan, making permissible its Halaal
and forbidding its Haraam, so that the Qur’aan can be a proof for him on the Day of
Judgement and intercede for him in entering the gardens of bliss.

Take some time to think about what Allah says in the Qur’an about Ramadan. Think
about what the Prophet (‫ ) صلى هللا عليه و سلم‬has said about Ramadan. Think about how the
Salaf used to prepare for Ramadan and how they exerted themselves to reap its benefits,
sincerely seeking only the pleasure of Allah alone. Think about the advice the scholars
have given regarding Ramadan.

Now, think about your own actions and your own relationship with Allah. What do you
want to achieve during this Ramadan inshallah? How will this year be different?

What benefits do you want to gain from fasting this month inshallah?

How will you attain those benefits bi’ithnillah? What potential difficulties or excuses can
you foresee occurring which may prevent you from reaching them?

Pause for a moment to contemplate on what has been your downfall in past years. What
could you do differently this year to overcome those hurdles inshallah?

After thinking about this, write down your goals, potential obstacles and solutions to
those potential difficulties.

The purpose of this exercise is not by any means a commitment written in stone. But
rather, a tool to help you assert yourself throughout Ramadan inshallah.

Even if after you set your Ramadan goals, you are unable to overcome the difficulties
which prevent you from reaching them, alhamdulillah, you are striving. You are trying.
And if you were sincere when aiming for those goals, trying only to please Allah, then
you will benefit inshallah.

Shaykh Ahmad ibn Ahmad Shamlaan (may Allaah preserve him) mentioned thirteen
mannerisms that are to be observed for the one eating the Sahoor:

1. Sincerity of the intentions

2. Saying Bismillaah when one is about to eat, eating with the right hand and eating from
that which is closer to you. Based upon the Hadeeth Umar ibn Abee Salamah.
3. Gathering together upon the food. Indeed in that there’s a blessing.
4. Not being wasteful in the meal and praising Allaah for it.
5. The the meal is from lawful wealth. Indeed it is stronger for the (carrying out) the act of
worship. Indeed Allaah is good and He only accepts that which is good.
6. Having concern for the (proper) time (regarding the Suhoor)
7. Seeking the forgiveness and making supplication in abundance during the time of as-
Sahar (last part of the night shortly before the break of dawn). For indeed it is a
blessed time (period).
8. Give Sadaqah during that time and being diligent to be one who aids the one who has
the ability to fulfill the fasting by feeding him the sahoor.
9. Washing the mouth good along with the usage of the Siwaak. This is in order that the
traces of the food do not remain in the mouth which will cause the one fasting doubt if
it was to overwhelm him and enter down his throat.
10. Waiting after the eating of the Sahoor for the purpose of performance of the dawn
prayer. How praise worthy it is if the person was to go to the Masjid and wait for the
prayer. Indeed that is stronger for him upon that (matter of praying the Fajr prayer on
time). This is the case especially when many from amongst the people stay awake
during the nights of Ramadaan up until the (time for) Sahoor. They eat the Sahoor then
lay down. As a result of that, sleep overcomes and they miss the prayer. It’s possible
that the person doesn’t get up until after the sun rise and some mid-day.
11. Taking the food that is suitable for the condition of the one fasting. Like eating the
dates along drinking milk and that which is similar to it.
12. Getting the children accustomed to eating the Sahoor and fasting.
13. Giving precedence (to others over oneself).

The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said,

[At-Tirmidhi, authenticated by Al-Albani (rahimahullaah).]

It has been explained by the people of knowledge that whoever gives a Muslim something
to break his fast with, he will receive this reward that came in this hadith. “Breaks” is a
general word and giving him dates is considered breaking. The sunnah is to break your
fasting by dates, as has been narrated by Anas (radiallaahu ‘anhu), who said,
“The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) used to break his Saum (fasting)
before performing Maghrib prayer with three fresh date-fruits; if there were no fresh
date-fruits, he would eat three dry dates; and if there were no dry date-fruits; he would
take three draughts of water.” [At-Tirmidhi]
Suggestion: Buy a box [or boxes] of dates, and hand it [them] over to the masjid, for the
sake of none but Allaah, to provide to the worshippers at the time of breaking the fast.

Anas (radiallaahu ‘anhu) reported:

The Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) came to visit Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (radiallaahu
‘anhu) who presented bread and olive oil to him. The Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa
sallam) ate it and said, “The observers of fast have broken their fast with you (this is the
literal translation, but the meaning is: ‘May Allaah reward you for providing a fasting
people with food to break their fast’); the pious people have eaten your food and the
angels invoked blessings on you.” [Abu Dawud]
The Commentary from Riyad-us-Saliheen reads: The word “Aftara” is informative in
nature, but it is used in the sense of a prayer. Thus, what it denotes is “May Allaah give

58
you the reward of one who arranges for the Iftar (breaking the Saum) of somebody.”
Thus, it induces one to hospitality according to his means.

Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih Al-’Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said,

“Those who have the ability should strive to feed those who are fasting (when it’s time to
break the fast) either in the masaajid or in other places. This is since whoever feeds a
fasting person, he will receive the same reward as the one fasting. So if a person feeds
his brothers who are fasting, he will receive the same reward as them. Therefore, those
whom Allaah has granted wealth should take advantage of this opportunity to obtain a
great reward.”

[48 Su'aalan fis-Siyaam]

Asked about holding banquets, inviting people, slaughtering, distributing meat in charity
and other efforts with food, Shaykh Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah) answered:

“Yes, offering food in Ramadaan has extra virtue due to the nobility of the time and the
need that the fasting people have for food. The Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam)
said: “Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like that of his reward (the
fasting person)“, so preparing food in this month for the needy is from the best of
actions because (the reward for giving) charity in the month of Ramadaan is multiplied
more than in the other months."

Many of us may think of journaling as keeping a diary like little girls do… but this is not
quite the same.
Journaling serves a greater purpose! It is a great way to help aid our personal growth
and development by becoming more conscious of our self.
You might think you don’t have time to sit and write about your day….and you are
probably right! However, journaling isn’t merely about writing the day’s events, nor does
it require a lot of time to be spent on it.
Rather, it is a simple tool which allows you to reflect over your actions, and the process
of recording your thoughts can give you a great positive insight into your own
behaviors and moods!
This insight can be hugely beneficial to you in developing your character as well as
spiritual, physical and emotional performances, because through understanding and
recognizing your behavioral patterns, you can help yourself to better them bi’ithnillah.
This following section allows you to jot down a few lines of self-reflection as you go
through Ramadan.
No one has to see what you write, it should be personal to you in order to give yourself
the freedom to be honest with yourself.
Ponder upon your actions and how you can strive further to improve them seeking only
the pleasure of Allah.
If you are not comfortable with writing your thoughts, instead use the space to copy out
an ayah or a hadeeth each day which will help you in your personal development
throughout this month bi’ithnilllah.

The main purpose of this activity, is to help you develop a greater sense of self-
awareness to encourage your striving to be the best Muslim you can be bi’ithnillah.

[Muslim]

This hadeeth is proof that the servant is obligated, after having Eemaan in Allaah, to
persevere and be steadfast upon obeying Him by performing the obligatory acts and
avoiding the prohibited ones. This is achieved by following the Straight Path, which is
the firm Religion, without drifting away from it to the right or to the left.

If a Muslim lived through Ramadaaan and spent its days in fasting and its nights in
prayer, and in that month he accustomed himself to doing acts of good, then he must
continue to remain upon this obedience to Allaah at all times (after that). This is the true
state of the servant (‘abd), for indeed, the Lord of the months is One and He is ever
watchful and witnessing His servants at all times.

Indeed, steadfastness after Ramadaan and the rectification of one’s statements and
actions are the greatest signs that one has gained benefit from the month of Ramadaan
and that he struggled in obedience. They are tokens of acceptance and signs of success.
Furthermore, the deeds of a servant do not come to an end with the end of a month and
the beginning of another. Rather they continue and extend until one reaches death, for
Allaah says:

80
[Surat-ul-Hijr: 99]

If the fasting of Ramadaan comes to an end, then indeed the voluntary fasting is still
prescribed throughout the entire year, and all praise is due to Allaah. If standing in
prayer at night during Ramadaan comes to an end, then indeed, the entire year is a time
for performing the night prayer. And if the Zakaat-ul-Fitr comes to an end, then there is
still the Zakaah that is obligatory as well as the voluntary charity that lasts the whole
year. This goes the same for reciting the Qur’aan and pondering over its meaning as well
as every other righteous deed that is desirable, for they can be done at all times. From
the many bounties that Allaah has bestowed upon His servants is that He has placed for
them many different types of acts of worship and He provided many means for doing
good deeds. Therefore, the enthusiasm and the zeal of the Muslim must be constant and
he must continue to remain in the service of his Master.

It is unfortunate to find some people performing worship by doing different types of

righteous acts during Ramadaan – they guard strictly their five daily prayers in the
masjid, they recite the Qur’aan abundantly and they give in charity from their money.
But when Ramadaan comes to an end, they grow lazy in their worship. Rather,
sometimes they even abandon the obligations, both generally, such as praying in
congregation, and specifically, such as praying the Fajr prayer!

And they (even) commit forbidden acts such as sleeping over the time of prayers,
indulging in places of foolishness and entertainment, and mingling in parks, especially
on the day of ‘Eed! Obtaining help from these evils is only through the Grace of Allaah.
Thus, they demolish what they have constructed and they destroy what they have
established. This is an indication of deprivation and a sign of perdition. We ask Allaah
for His safeguarding and protection!

Indeed, these types of people take the example of turning in repentance and ceasing
from committing evil deeds as something specific and restricted to (only) the month of

Ramadaan. So they stop doing these (good) acts when the month stops. Thus, it is as if
they have abandoned sinning for the sake of Ramadaan, and not out of fear for Allaah!
How evil are these people who do not know Allaah except in Ramadaan!

81
1.

Truly, the success that Allaah grants His servant lies in the fasting of Ramadaan. And
Allaah’s assisting him to do that is a great blessing. Thus, this calls for the servant to be
grateful to his Lord. And this understanding can be found in Allaah’s saying, after
having completed the favour of the month of fasting: “(He wants that you) must compete
the same number of days, and that you must magnify Allaah (by saying Allaahu Akbar)
for having guided you, so that you may be grateful to Him.” [Surat-ul-Baqarah: 185]

So the one who is grateful for having fasted, he will remain upon that condition and
continue to perform righteous deeds.

Indeed, the true manner of a Muslim is that of one who praises and thanks his Lord for
having been bestowed the ability to fast and make qiyaam (night prayer). His condition
after Ramadaan is better than it was before Ramadaan. He is more ready to obey,
desiring to do good deeds and quick to implement the obligatory acts. This is since he
has acquired benefit from this prominent institute of learning. It is that of one who fears
for having his fast not accepted, for indeed Allaah only accepts from those who have
Taqwaa.
The righteous predecessors would struggle to complete and perfect their deeds, hoping
afterwards, that they would be accepted and fearing that they would be rejected. From
the reports of ‘Alee (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) is that he said:

‘Aa’ishah said:

So be warned and again be warned – of turning backward after having attained

guidance, of going astray after persevering! And ask Allaah to provide you with
endurance in doing righteous deeds and continuity in performing good acts. And ask
Allaah that He grant you a good end, in order that He may accept our Ramadaan from
us.

Ramadan is a school of iman and a ‘stop to recharge one’s spiritual batteries’ – to

acquire one’s provision for the rest of the year…
For when will one take a lesson and change for better if not in the month of Ramadan?
The noble month is a true school of transformation in which we change our actions,
habits and manners that are in variance with the Law of Allah ‘azza wa jall.

If you are from those who benefited from Ramadan, fulfilled the requirements of taqwa,
truly fasted the month, prayed in it with truthfulness, and strove against you soul, then
praise and thank Allah, and ask Him for steadfastness upon it until you meet your death.
Be not like one who has sewn a shirt and then destroyed it… Have you seen one who
sewed a shirt or thawb, so when she looked at it, she liked it. Then she destroyed it
pulling a thread by thread for no reason. What would people say about such a person?!
Or have you seen one who earns a fortune trading throughout the day, then when the
night comes, he throws away all that he earned, dirham by dirham. What would people
say about such a person?!

This is the condition of one who returns to sinning and evildoing after Ramadan and
leaves obedience and righteous actions. So after he was favored with the blessing of
obedience and enjoyment of communicating with Allah he returned to the blaze of sins
and evil actions. How evil are the people who know Allah only in Ramadan!
My dear ones,
falling short in one’s commitment to Islam after Ramadan is manifested in many ways,
including:

1 – Men leaving the five prayers in congregation, after they filled mosques for Taraweeh
prayers, thus going to the masjid for recommended prayers and leaving obligatory ones.
84
2 – Return to musical entertainment, forbidden films, women displaying their adornment
beyond that which ordinarily appears thereof, free mixing etc.

This is not thankfulness for blessings and favors, nor is it the sign of acceptance of
one’s actions, rather this is opposition to favors and absence of thankfulness.
These are from signs of one’s deeds not being accepted – and Allah’s refuge is sought –
for one who truly fasts rejoices on the occasion of `eid, praises his Lord for helping him
complete the fast, and remains fearful that Allah may not accept his fasting, just as the
Salaf would continue asking for acceptance of their actions in Ramadan for six months
after it.
From signs that one’s deeds are accepted is that he or she has improved in his or her
obedience to Allah `azza wa jall.

Increase you in good, faith and righteous actions. So if the servant is truly thankful to
his Lord, you will see him guided to more obedience and distanced from sinfulness.
Thankfulness is leaving sins, as the early Muslims said.

The Muslim must continuously be in the state of obedience of Allah, firm upon His
Sharee`ah, steadfast upon His Deen, so that he or she is not of those who worship Allah
only during one month or only in one place. Rather, the believer knows that the Lord of
Ramadan is also the Lord of other months, and that He is the Lord of all times and
places, so he is steadfast upon the Sharee`ah of Allah until he meets Him while He is
pleased with him. Allah ta`ala said,

And,

85
1.

And the Prophet, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, said,

– If the fasting in Ramadan has ended, then there remains voluntary fasting, such as
fasting six days in Shawwal, on Mondays and Thursdays, the three days in the middle of
the month, the days of `Aashoora and `Arafat, and others.
– If standing in prayer at night during Ramadan has ended, then there remains voluntary
night prayer throughout the year.

– If the charity in Ramadan and zakat ul-fitr have ended, then there is the obligatory
Zakat, and also there are many other open doors to charity, voluntary actions and jihad.
– Reading of the Qur’an and contemplating it is not only for Ramadan, rather it is for all
times.
Righteous actions are for all times and all places, so strive – O my brother and sister –
and beware of laziness. And remember that it is not allowed for us to leave the
obligatory actions or delay them, such as the five daily prayers on time, in congregation
etc.
And do not fall into forbidden actions, such as forbidden sayings, food and drinks, or
by looking at or listening to what is forbidden.
Be steadfast and upright upon the Deen of Allah at all times, for you do not know when
you’ll meet the Angel of Death. Beware of him taking you while you are in a state of sin.
“O Allah, Who turns the hearts, keep our hearts steadfast upon Your Deen.”
I ask Allah to accept from us and you our fasting, our prayers and other righteous
actions, that our condition after Ramadan be a better one, that the state of our Ummah
improves, that we are granted honour and that we truly turn to our Lord…Ameen
