Lesson Plan

Name: Danielle Ross

Type of setting: Home/Classroom
Number of Students: 15
Special Needs: Tourette’s Syndrome
Grade Level: 4th Grade
Subject: Geometry
Topic: Angles
Video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwkQUuj_tR0

I. Purpose:
Students will learn how to properly measure, draw, and identify the three different types of
angles.
II. Student (Instructional) Objectives:
A. Content/Skill/Concept:
Once the student has viewed the Prezi, the students should then be comfortable with the
subject matter to put their knowledge comfortably into practice.
B. Behavior:
Students will be able to identify, list, and compare different angles and give their measurements.
They also will be able to draw an angle when given only the measurement.
C. Condition:
Students are asked to view the Prezi in a quiet, learner friendly atmosphere. The students will
be asked to spend enough time watching this video, perhaps viewing it several times, and be
able to come into class with an understanding of the subject matter. While viewing this Prezi the
students will be asked to keep a notebook and pen so they can write down any and all
questions they have so we can discuss them with the entire class the following day.
III. Standards
Standard 4.G.A.1
i. A. Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by their
properties of their lines and angles
1. Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute,
obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-
dimensional figures.
IV. Procedures
At Home: (20 minutes) Introduction to New Material (I Do):
At home the students will access my Prezi about angles on one of their devices at home,
it is recommended to use a computer. Once the children go through the Prezi slides they will
watch a short video from Khan Academy to further enhance their understanding of the topic. If
the students have any questions or concerns they will write them in their notebook so they can
ask them in class the next day.
In Class the Next Day: (45 Minutes)
1. Anticipatory Set (Do Now): (15 minutes)
Once in class the students have will 5 minutes to review and ask questions about the
video from the night before. After they will access their laptops and be directed to
https://www.mathgames.com/skill/4.1-acute-right-obtuse-and-straight-angles, which is a
fun and educational game for reviewing angles.
2. Guided Practice (We Do): (15 minutes)
Students will be put into three groups. Each group will be assigned five practice
problems from the textbook to solve. Once this activity is completed the students will
present and explain to the class their findings.
3. Independent Practice (You Do): (10 minutes)
The students will then be handed a piece of paper so that they can draw an object from
their imagination. They will have to use only straight lines to make this object. Once
done with the drawing they will identify the different angles they used. This will enable
me to completely assess that each student has a full understanding of the material and
how imagine different angles.
4. Include all key questions in your lesson plan at the step at which each of
these questions will be asked.
-Ask students to explain in their own words what each angle is. Help the students to be
able to measure and create each of the three types of angles, easily and without
confusion.
-How to identify what an angle is. Show them in class using a protractor and simple
classroom objects how to measure to find angles.
-Continue discussion in class on the reasons why it is important to know how to
correctly identify angles as the students continue their mathematical studies in
geometry.
-Ask students to draw an object and identify which angles they have used in their
creation.
5. Procedures
1. Students will watch the presentation at home and prepare to ask any questions
from the night before, as instructed.
2. Once at school I will ask if the students have any questions from the night before
so I can help them to understand better.
3. I will then instruct the students to get their laptops and start to play the angle
game that is assigned. https://www.mathgames.com/skill/4.1-acute-right-obtuse-
and-straight-angles.
a. -Ask students to explain in their own words what each angle is. Help the
students to be able to measure and create each of the three types of
angles, easily and without confusion.
4. Next I will instruct the students to write their own definition of the three different
angles and have them give an example seen in the classroom. I will give an
example of an angle I see in a classroom and the type it is.
a. -How to identify what an angle is. Show them in class using a protractor
and simple classroom objects how to measure to find angles.
5. After this the class will discuss the definitions and the examples they wrote down.
6. The students will then be put into groups of three (5 kids per group) and be
assigned 5 practice problems to answer which will be presented and explained in
front of the class.
a. -Continue discussion in class on the reasons why it is important to know
how to correctly identify angles as the students continue their
mathematical studies in geometry.
7. Lastly the students will get a piece of paper that they will draw an object of their
imagination on. They will have to use different angles in their object and discuss.
This will be towards the end of the lesson so I know if the students have an
understand. If there is a repeated problem I will explain.
a. -Ask students to draw an object and identify which angles they have used
in their creation.
6. Closure
To sum up the lesson as a class we will come up with as many real life applications, as
we can, that would necessitate the proper use of measuring an angle. Which would
ensure that they fully understand angles.
V. Assessment:
1. For the Flipped part of the lesson I will assess that the students understood by seeing
how they do on the following activities.
2. During the Anticipatory Set I will walk around and observe (informal) how the students
are doing in the online game. By seeing how many questions they get right vs wrong I
will have a better idea of how they are doing and if they are meeting the standards I set.
3. While doing the guided practice I will be able to see (informal) how the students interact
with one another and figure out how to do the problems. I will then see how they present
their answers and explain them to the class (formal) and tell them if they’re problem
answers were right or not.
4. Assessing the independent practice will be done by watching how the students integrate
their knowledge of angles into their own imagination (informal). By checking how they do
on their labeling of their drawings will be the formal aspect.
VI. Materials:
A. Computer or device to watch Prezi (accessible at home and school )
B. Prezi link
C. Notebook
D. Textbook
E. Protractor
F. Piece of paper
VII. Accommodation:
My accomodation for this lesson is for a student who has Tourette's Syndrome. Once the
student gets to class I will use include in my classroom review how the different types of angles
can be seen in real life examples, such as video games. I am making this accommodation
because students with TS tend to have attention issues. By working in topics that this child finds
interesting it will help the student to refocus and peak their interest on the topic being learned.
