Introducción
Los medicamentos para la interrupción del embarazo representan una
opción viable para los casos de aborto legal. De acuerdo a las leyes de
aborto, los países de América Latina y el Caribe pueden dividirse
en tres grupos. Un primer grupo lo conforman países en donde el
acceso al aborto no se limita por razón alguna. Estos países son Cuba,
Guyana y Puerto Rico. Otro grupo está conformado por países don-
de la práctica del aborto está completamente prohibida, ni siquiera
para salvar la vida de la mujer. En este grupo se encuentran Chile y
El Salvador. Mientras que en el grupo restante, conformado por la
mayoría de los países, el aborto es permitido bajo algunas circunstan-
cias, que incluyen comúnmente la necesidad de proteger la salud o la
vida de la mujer y cuando el embarazo fue el resultado de una violación.
México es un país donde se consideran varias circunstancias bajo las
cuales el aborto no es punible, aunque la ley varía de estado a estado.

Los estudios que se conocen a la fecha han tenido una eficacia varia-
ble, con cifras de éxito entre 47% [Creinin & Vittingtoff 1994] y
96% [Carbonell et al., 1997a]. Los estudios más recientes reportan ci-
fras por encima del 80% de eficacia [Carbonell et al., 1997a; 1997b;
Jain et al., 1998; Tang et al., 2002a]. El estudio que reportó la mayor
eficacia utilizó dosis de 800 µg de misoprostol vía vaginal (VV), cada
48 horas, hasta un máximo de tres dosis. Se reportó una eficacia su-
perior al 90% para embarazos de menos de 63 días de amenorrea
[Carbonell et al., 1997a].
