A beautiful scenery, good-smelling fragrances, decors used for different

occasions, a present to friends and loved ones, and in various ways that can either be
romantic or not are just some of the things that flowers contribute by utilizing them.
Various flowers are used for different purposes, each of which has its own denotation.
The national flower of the Philippines, Sampaguita, is of no difference.

Sampaguita, a member of the Jasmine family, proves that it is famous neither for
being the national flower nor being popular in the market, but for the numerous benefits
it offers. Its fragrance can be a factor of its popularity as they are made and sold as
garlands in the streets and outside the churches. These garlands are usually given to
tourists, new graduates and competition winners. Its extracts are also used to relieve
pain such as headaches, muscle aches, and even has the characteristic of an anti-
depressant. The flower’s roots are also used to treat wounds and snake bites. Its leaves
and flowers have antipyretic and decongestant properties. Lastly, Sampaguita’s
beautiful flowers are also used as hair ornamentation. With these functions and
benefits, Sampaguita industries have been proven to have increasing profitability
relative to the increase in the demand of Sampaguita production.

Sampaguita industries are conventionally found on the provinces of Laguna,

Bulacan, and Pampanga, where the lands are well-suited to reproduce and cultivate
Sampaguita. The largest among these plantations can be found in Laguna. Following its
steps in the growing Sampaguita industry, the town of Lubao, Pampanga, took a huge
leap of faith a few decades ago, which has become the primary source of income for
some barrios in the town. The industry started in San Roque, Dau after Ricardo Lalic
and Pedro Pamintuan brought some Sampaguita from Laguna upon seeing its
productivity. Years later, the former Mayor of the town, Lilia Pineda, also realized the
potential of Sampaguita as a lucrative source of income.

Due to Pineda’s commitment to promote and improve the Sampaguita industry,

various government agencies had also pledged support for the provincial government’s
livelihood program. Since then, the Bureau of Plant Industry conducted seminars on
various Sampaguita production trainings to ensure the growth of Pampanga’s
Sampaguita industry. Through the manifestation of productive livelihood, the Bureau of
Plant Industry has vowed to support Pampanga’s rising Sampaguita industry, according
to an article of Balita Ph.

In alignment to these progresses, the group seeks to enlarge the production of

Sampaguita here in Pampanga, particularly in the rural areas of Mabalacat City, by
establishing another Sampaguita Plantation. Thus, maximizing the capacity of the fertile
lands of Pampanga while helping families and communities build livelihood out of the
production of Sampaguita in the area.

The group foresees that the establishment of which will be helpful in catering the
demands and needs for the Sampaguita plant of the neighboring provinces of
Pampanga and at the same time, providing a great deal of convenience to those that
are close to Mabalacat City.
