Department Philosophy: The belief of the instructors in the Physical Education Department at M.L.
King is that Physical Education is an integral part in the growth and development of an individual. As a
result of this philosophy courses within this department are designed to provide each student with an
opportunity to participate in various sports, conditioning and body development exercises, coeducational
activities, lead up games and large group games.

Course Description:
Compulsory Activities - Cardio activities, Aerobic focus, Muscular Strength and Endurance training,
Flexibility techniques, and Body Composition monitoring
Supplemental Activities - Weight lifting, Skills Training, Circuit Training, Fitness Games, Heart Rate
Monitoring, Conditioning, Nature walk Activities, Minor Aerobics and more.

* Based on established national/international standards for the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate
Programs, these courses are exempted from and/or may make modifications to the system-wide grading percentages.
However, the approved syllabi template established by the DeKalb County School System will be used.

Letter grades will be awarded according to the Dekalb County Grading Policy as follows:
A = 90-100 B = 80-89 C = 71-79 D = 70 F = 69 & Below

Required Materials:
• Dressing out is a requirement for Physical Education and uniforms are mandatory. Socks and tennis shoes
only are also part of the dress code.
• Individual lockers are available for each student.
• Students should use a combination lock. Locks may be purchased/rented through the PE Department.
• Do not share lockers.
• Key locks are discouraged. Please give the combination of your lock to the teacher.
• All PE Clothes are to be taken home on Friday for washing.
     
Classroom Expectations:
 All school rules as listed in the student handbook will be enforced.
• Students have 5 minutes to dress out and report for roll call. Students will also have 5 minutes to
change for the next class.
• No food, drink, candy, hats or gum is allowed in the gym or locker room before, during or after PE
class.
• Body lotions are not allowed in the gymnasium.
 No profanity.
 No hanging or grabbing of the basketball goals or nets.
• Students are responsible for the security of their own valuables
• No street shoes, slides, or flip flops on gym floor.
 No walking on gym floor.( Please walk around outside of red border)
 No cell phones or other electronic devices allowed.
• Disrespect of the rights, property and feelings of others will not be tolerated.

Late Assignments/ Make-up Policy/ Re-do Policy


• Students will be considered tardy if they miss more than 10 minutes of class.
• A student that is absent will earn a grade of zero.
• An excused absence will be allowed to be made up. Make-up work must be returned within 3 days of the
absence. Only excused absences will be allowed to make-up work.
• A student who is in attendance but who is either too ill or injured to participate may be excused that day by
bringing a note from a parent. After 2 days of nonparticipation a doctor’s note is required.
• If a student cannot participate for a period of more than 15 days they will not receive credit for that class.
Doctor notes must be clear and specific in outlining any restrictions.
