SCN195 – Community Health

Urban Studies – Writing Intensive, Pre-requisites: MAT099 & ENG101 (or equivalent)
Required Low Stakes Assignment Instructions
Writing Center: B200, Monday through Friday 9:15am – 9pm

REQUIRED Low Stakes Assignments – TWO (2): 10% of final grade
• Documentary films will be used as the basis for two short 500-600 word (2 page) essay response papers.
• The films may be viewed by logging into ePortfolio: search for SCN195 Community Health Video or login
then access this link https://lagcc-cuny.digication.com/SCN195_video
• Films will be viewed on student’s own time (or in class, if time permits) by a specific date.
• Each film will be discussed in class (take notes!) then the response paper will be due.
• Low stakes writing assignment are not concerned with grammar or spelling but developing students’ skills
through “informal” writing.
• Assignment grading will focus on clarity of ideas expressed in response to specific prompts.
• Instructor reserves the right not to accept late assignments and/or to deduct points if accepted.

Formatting and Style for Papers


Papers must be formatted using the guidelines suggested by APA and the MLA
• 1-inch margins on all sides (change default settings on word processing software if needed)
• 12 point Times New Roman font
• Running Header (appears at top of every page): For this class use – Name, SCN195, Date paper turned in
• Page number in footer on bottom right of page
• Double Spaced with Left Justification (leaves the right side ‘ragged’ and uneven)
• Indent first line of every paragraph ½ inch

Essay 1: Typhoid Mary – The Most Dangerous Woman in America


o Open with a brief reaction to the film (10 points) and then discuss the following issues (45 points each)
o How did Mary’s working-class world and position in society affect how she was viewed and the treatment
she received from the more educated public health officials?
o Discuss an event in the film that demonstrates an example of the decision making (inform of decision,
informed consent, or shared decision making) used with Mary in her diagnosis, treatment, and quarantine.

Essay 2: Designing Healthy Communities – Social Policy in Concrete


o Open with a brief reaction to the film (10 points) then use the Social Determinants of Health (Access to
Health, Social Status, Social Support, Food, Housing, Education, Work, Stress, Transportation, Place) as a
framework to discuss the following using examples from the film (40 points each).
o Which determinant is most affecting the health of the residents of Oakland?
o Which determinant is most affecting the health of the residents of Detroit?
o Close with your thoughts on which determinants is most affecting the health of the residents of your
neighborhood (10 points).
