Chamber honors Mike Hamner, Sue Baker for community service

Mike Hamner was described as a “quiet
and humble leader” who is the “perfect fit”
for the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce
Outstanding Citizen award.
Hamner is the vice president of operations for
Avon Protection Systems, where he supervises
250 employees.
Nominator Dan Minor, owner of Cadillac
Casting, said Hamner has been a “key factor
in growing and maintaining (Avon Protection
Systems’) local presence.”
Minor said he classifies Hamner as a “brother”
whose contributions to the Cadillac community
cannot be overstated.
“As president of the Industrial Fund,
Mike spent countless hours on the Mitchell
Corporation Reuse Committee and was a key
part of this committee being able to successfully
remove a $350,000 lien, which was making the
re-use of this site impossible,” Minor said.
In addition to serving with the Cadillac Area
Industrial Fund and Cadillac Area Industrial
Group, Hamner is a member of the Cadillac Area
Chamber of Commerce, Munson Healthcare
Board of Trustees and Board of Regents of Baker
College of Cadillac.
“Mike is a very quiet and humble leader who
has contributed much to our community,” Minor
said. “Mike is not a self-promoter and because
of this, many may not know what Mike has con-
tributed to our community. Thus, he is a perfect
candidate for this award.”
Upon receiving his award, Hamner was sur-
prised to find out his children had made a sur-
prise appearance.
Visibly moved, Hamner confided he didn’t
“believe in big speeches” but added that Cadillac
has been a special place.
“It’s a great place to raise a family,” Hamner
said. “It fits right into the blue-collar town we
want to be.”
For the Spirit of the Community Honors, the
chamber selected a life-long resident whose ser-
vice has resulted in a “stronger Cadillac.”
Sue Baker has played an active role in mul-
tiple community organizations, including the
Women’s Giving Circle, Rotary Club, YMCA,
Up North Arts, Viking Booster Club, and First
Presbyterian Church.
Baker was awarded the Outstanding Friend
of Education award in 2016 and nominator
Jennifer Brown, Cadillac Area Public Schools
superintendent, described Baker as someone
who sees a challenge and “jumps in with both
feet, rolls up her sleeves and makes things hap-
pen.”
“With her leadership, the schools have funded
freshmen sports, participation fees for low-
income students, and purchased needed equip-
ment to keep athletics going through budget
cuts,” Brown said.
“Most recently, Sue volunteered hundreds of
hours to lead and support the Cadillac for Kids
committee. She worked tirelessly to inform vot-
ers and assure that Cadillac Area Public Schools
would be a school system that would continue to
provide excellence in academics, arts and athlet-
ics for future generations.”
Baker credits her father for inspiring her to
serve.
She said he often volunteered his time in order
to make Cadillac a better place to live.
“I love this town and I love the people in it,”
Baker said.
New this year, the chamber awarded the first
Ambassador of the Year award to 107.9 CDY
employee Dawna Marie for creating a program
that allowed past and present chamber members
to record a radio spot free of charge.
“I love this community,” Marie said. “This com-
munity has blessed me. You guys have supported
me since 1971. I love everybody. I’m so thankful
for everything. It’s an honor to serve this com-
munity.”

Peterson Selected as Moderator

David Peterson, of the Cadillac law firm of Law Offices of David
R. Peterson, P.C., recently participated as a moderator at the Upper
Michigan Legal Institute. The two-day conference featured promi-
nent speaker who provided lectures and workshops on current devel-

prestigious award
The Society for Human Resource
Management (SHRM) recently award-
ed the Cadillac Area Human Resources
Association (CAHRA) its prestigious EXCEL
Gold Award for the chapter’s accomplish-
ments in 2017. The EXCEL Award can be
earned at four levels: bronze, silver, gold
and platinum. Each level has a prescribed
set of requirements and accomplishments
that must be met.
To receive this prestigious award, CAHRA
completed three initiatives:  1. organized
a networking event to increase their chap-
ter awareness and, ultimately, to increase
membership; 2. awarded a college scholar-
ship to a local high school senior interested
in the HR profession; and 3. donated a mon-
etary award to the Bob Rowland Memorial
Driver’s Education Scholarship fund to
allow three students to complete driver’s
education.

Project Christmas
Project Christmas has received a $1,000 grant award from the Cadillac and Kellogg for
Youth Committee; an advisory committee to the Cadillac Area Community Foundation.
The grant funds will be used for the purchase of books to be given for every child whose
family is a recipient of the Project Christmas program.
Project Christmas is a non-profit organization, entering its 30th year that works year-
long to raise funds to provide a Christmas holiday for less fortunate families in Wexford
and Missaukee counties. The Program served 904 families in 2017; 638 families from
Wexford County and 266 families from Missaukee County. The organization is run by
volunteers and supported by community donations. For additional information please

The Imagination Library is avail-
able to all families with children
birth to five years who reside with-
in the area served by the Wexford
Missaukee Intermediate School
District. The program is available at no cost to families and is sup-
ported completely by contributions from individuals, businesses
and local non-profit agencies. 100% of donated funds go toward the
purchase and mailing of books to area children.
The Great Start Collaborative is made up of parents, profession-
als, local agencies and schools who are working together to pro-
mote and improve our local system of resources and supports for
families with children birth to 8 years.

Munson Healthcare
Urgent Care Open
Care for allergies, mild fevers, rashes, minor inju-
ries and more, is now available at the new Munson
Healthcare Urgent Care located across from Cadillac
Hospital’s Emergency Room.
The facility began seeing patients on July 10 and will
be open daily from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.
Patients are encouraged to see their primary care
doctor first for non-emergent needs but when their
doctor’s office is closed or an appointment is not avail-
able, urgent care is available.
Munson Healthcare Urgent Care will provide con-
venient, walk-in medical service when primary care
physicians are not available or residents do not have
a primary care provider. The clinic will be staffed by
a highly qualified team and will feature on-site X-ray
and limited lab testing for patient convenience.
Residents should choose urgent care services when
experiencing health issues such as back or muscle
strains, bladder infections, coughs and sinus prob-
lems, mild burns, sore throats, nausea or vomiting,
pink eye, and other non-life threatening conditions.
