Role of accurate refiner gap control

The OptiFiner™ Concept for recycled fiber and stock preparation applications focuses on processing to obtain desired fiber properties through accurate refiner gap control. OptiFiner refining plays also an important role in Optifeed™ concept.

The stock preparation refining is one of the most important stages in the papermaking process. Refining affects the smooth running of the paper machine and determines the quality of the paper and its final properties.

Metso Paper’s refining experience dates back to the early 1950s when its first refiners were delivered to customers. With the in-house experience of both conventional conical refiners and double-disc refiners, the OptiFiner concept combines the favorable features and performance benefits of both refining concepts.

Today, OptiFiner refining technology is proven technology that is being developed continuously as well as related control systems and refiner fillings technology.

Refining result is determined between the refiner fillings. Consequently, the most important requirement in refining is to maintain precise control of the gap clearance combined with using the fillings tailored correctly to the stock. Stable operation and uniform refining results are ensured by the OptiFiner refiner design. The OptiFiner features a cantilevered design with fixed stator and uniformly moving rotor. The single stable gap clearance is maintained by precise control technology.

Due to cone angle the gap movement is only one third from axial loading movement of the rotor.

The flow pattern between the fillings ensures high fiber coverage on bars due to the application of centrifugal force. Combined with the long refining zone, this facilitates long retention time for the fibers between the fillings and ensures optimized fiber treatment results.

The Optifiner design, featuring a wide range of filling patterns, enables papermaker to optimize the virgin or recycled fiber pulp properties to meet desired final paper properties. Standard fillings of different coarseness meet the requirement for most typical short- and long-fiber refining applications, including recycled-fiber treatment.
