CIVIL ENGINEERING SPORTS AND ACADEMIC OLYMPIAD 2018

P.I.C.E. GENIUS 2018


MECHANICS OF THE COMPETITION

The competition will begin with 50 participants coming from the 5 Civil Engineering
divisions. From 50, 40 will be eliminated during the elimination round. Only the 10
remaining participants will be able to battle in the competition proper.

Each day, the remaining competitors go head to head in various mental challenges
testing their knowledge of:
General Knowledge
Memory
Philippines: Presidents and Geography
Earth and Space
Spelling

REGISTRATION:
The P.I.C.E. Genius competition is open to all bona fide CE Students. Each Civil
Engineering Divisions are encouraged to send a minimum of seven (7) and a
maximum of ten (10) participants of any year level (1st to 5th year). The Head of
Division is in charge of submitting their complete list of participants to the event
facilitator(s).

DRESS CODE:
The participants are encouraged to wear the color of their division.

COMPETITION MECHANICS

GENERAL RULES:

1. The P.I.C.E. Genius will be an individual competition and is a General


Knowledge type of competition.
2. There are six (6) rounds in the competition,
The General Elimination Round,
Memory,
Philippines: Presidents and Geography,
Earth and Space,
Spelling,
and the Academic Olympiad.
3. A day before or prior some specific rounds, module(s) will be given to the
participants where topics that will be covered in the competition can be
found. The elimination round is an exception to this and there will be no
given modules beforehand.
4. Questions for the entire contest will cover most of the modules that were
given. It is also possible that topics that are not in the modules may be asked
in the competition.
5. The types of questions vary from the specific rules of each round.
6. The contestants will be able to enter the competition hall one at a time. The
other contestants must wait in a designated area. The elimination round is an
exception to this rule.
7. Once a contestant has finished his or her round, he or she must sit in the
audience to watch the other contestants. The elimination round is an
exception to this rule.
8. Specified numbers of participants with the lowest scores will be eliminated
each round.
9. All problems/protests regarding a question/answer can only be entertained
and clarified after the round of the participant.
10. Clarifications regarding the rules of the competition shall be entertained
before the start of the competition proper.

DAY 1 (August 23, 2018)

GENERAL ELIMINATION ROUND:


Participants: 50

1. The Elimination round is divided into 2 phases: The Plucking Out and The
Cream of the Crop.
2. The Plucking Out Phase is composed of fifteen (15) questions.
3. Each correct answer is equivalent to one (1) point.
4. Questions in this round will be General Knowledge.
5. Questions will be flashed in the screen with or without choices.
6. Questions will be read aloud two (2) times, participants can only start
writing after the quizmaster says “Go”.
7. Participants should stop writing after fifteen (15) seconds when the
quizmaster says “Boards up”.
8. Boards should not be put down unless told to do so.
9. Twenty (20) individuals with the lowest scores will be eliminated or in
this case, plucked out of the competition.
10. The Cream of the Crop Phase is composed of fifteen (15) questions. Rules
numbers 3 to 8 shall also be applied.
11. Ten (10) individuals with the highest scores will complete the “Cream of
the Crop” and will proceed to the main competition.

MEMORY ROUND:
Remaining Participants: 10

“Mechanics for the Memory Round will be given before the start of the round*

*If ties would occur, points from the Elimination Round and the Memory Round will
be combined.
*Only seven (7) competitors may proceed to the next rounds.

DAY 2 (August 24, 2018)

PHILIPPINES: PRESIDENTS AND GEOGRAPHY ROUND


Remaining Participants: 7

1. Each competitor will be given a module a day prior the round.


2. The module will cover most of the questions in the competition.
3. Questions that are not included in the modules may be asked, that is why
further/extra research or study is encouraged.
4. Questions will not be flashed on screen and will only be read aloud once by
the quizmaster.
5. Two (2) minutes will be given to answer up to 15 questions about the
Philippine Presidents.
6. Ninety (90) seconds will be given to answer as many Philippine Geography
related questions as possible.
7. Competitors are allowed to say “pass” to questions.
8. Passed questions may be answered if there is still time left.
9. Each correct answer is equivalent to one (1) point.

EARTH AND SPACE ROUND


Remaining Participants: 7

1. Each competitor will be given a module a day prior the round.


2. The module will cover most of the questions in the competition.
3. Questions that are not included in the modules may be asked, that is why
further/extra research or study is encouraged.
4. Questions will not be flashed on screen and will only be read aloud once by
the quizmaster.
5. Two (2) minutes and thirty (30) seconds will be given to answer up to fifteen
(15) questions about the Earth (Earth Science).
6. Ninety (90) seconds will be given to answer up to ten (10) questions about
Space (Astronomy).
7. Competitors are allowed to say “pass” to questions.
8. Passed questions may be answered if there is still time left.
9. Each correct answer is equivalent to one (1) point.

*SCORES FOR PHILLIPINES: PRESIDENTS AND GEOGRAPHY and EARTH AND


SPACE will be combined. This will be used as basis for the ranking.
* Two (2) competitors with the lowest scores shall be eliminated.
*Only five (5) competitors may proceed to the next rounds.

DAY 3 (August 25, 2018)

SPELLING ROUND
Remaining Participants: 5

1. Each competitor will be given a module a day prior the round.


2. The module will cover most of the words to be spelled in the competition.
3. Words that are not included in the modules may be asked, that is why
further/extra research or study is encouraged.
4. The words to be spelled will not be flashed on screen and will only be read
aloud once by the quizmaster.
5. The competitor must spell the word out in a loud and clear fashion.
6. The competitor is not allowed to repeat letters unless the word has double
letters.
7. Once an incorrect letter has been said, the word is considered wrong.
8. Ten (10) words will be given to spell.
9. Each correct answer is equivalent to one (1) point.
10. Two (2) competitors with the lowest scores shall be eliminated.

ACADEMIC OLYMPIAD ROUND


Remaining Participants: 3
1. The remaining three (3) competitors will be given 10 minutes to answer up
to 50 questions from all subjects (Philippines: Presidents and Geography,
Earth and Space, and Spelling) covered throughout the competition.
2. Competitors are allowed to say “pass” to questions.
3. Passed questions will now be considered wrong.
4. The competitor with the most correct answers would be named P.I.C.E.
Genius 2018.

PRIZES:
1st Place:
Will be hailed as P.I.C.E. Genius 2018
Certificate of Recognition,
and 300 Peso Cash Prize

400 points will be awarded to the participant’s division

2nd Place:
Will be hailed as 1st Runner Up
Certificate of Recognition,
and 200 Peso Cash Prize

300 points will be awarded to the participant’s division

3rd Place:
Will be hailed as 2nd Runner Up
Certificate of Recognition,
and 100 Peso Cash Prize

200 points will be awarded to the participant’s division
