t has been 19 years since Keldrick Dunn last coached at
Redan High School, but he is now back and ready to lead the
Redan Raiders’ football team.
“It feels great to be back, seeing the old halls again and
seeing some of the old teachers,” Dunn said. “It’s going to be an
experience in itself, and I can’t wait to take this opportunity and
see what’s going to happen.”
Dunn is one of five new head football coaches in DeKalb
County. Rosaria Rice is the new coach at Druid Hills, Zack
Edwards has taken over at Lakeside, Lee Hannah is the new
leader at Miller Grove and Vonnell Carter is the new coach at Zack Edwards
Towers.
Keldrick Dunn
Carter spent the past three seasons at Southwest DeKalb as an
assistant coach. Hannah, who was at Flowery Branch last season,
is returning to DeKalb County. He coached at M.L. King from
2008 to 2009.
Dunn, who is in his 25th year in coaching, was the offensive
line coach at Redan from 1992 to 1999. He left Redan to coach
at Morris Brown College. He played tight end in the NFL for five
seasons in the late 1980s. Dunn will try to lead Redan to its first
winning season since 2010
“[Former] coach [Roderick] Moore did what he could with
the job that he did, and he taught me a lot,” Dunn said. “I’m just
going to take the baton and do what I do. I’ve been in this game
for a long time, I’ve worked with a lot of coaches and I’m going to
implement some of the stuff they did and take my own niche and
just run it in the ground.”
Redan’s opponents should expect to see a more aggressive
team this season, according to Dunn.
“On offense we want to move the ball around, get a lot of
formations and try to work from there,” he said. “On defense we
want to strike. We want to be more aggressive in everything and
try to put everything in perspective. We want the guys to have
fun and play the game.”
Edwards was promoted from assistant coach at Lakeside to
head coach. He has two years of coaching under his belt. He said
he is blessed to have an opportunity to be a head coach so soon in
his career.
