San Miguel Corporation

In 1819, Southeast Asia’s first brewery produced and bottled beer, La fabrica de Cerveza de San Miguel
was established. By 1914, San Miguel Beers were exported from Manila to Shanghai, Hongkong and
Guam. As San Miguel extended its operations, it established the first local brewer in Hongkong in 1948.
Today, San Miguel Corporation’s flagship product – San Miguel Beer, is now included in the top 10 beer
brands in the world and considered one of the largest selling beer. The company further extended its
operations in various countries in Asia– Hongkong, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia.
The corporation also subsequently entered into food and packaging business, and heavy industries
including power and other utilities, mining, energy, tollways and airports.

Through partnerships of major international companies which include Hormel Foods


Corporation, Yamamura Glass and Fuso Machine, Mold Manufacturing of Japan and Japan’s leading
brewer and global player, Kirin Brewery Company, Ltd., San Miguel was able to enhance its competitive
position in Asia.

Petron

Petron’s history can be traced way back in 1993 when Standard Vacuum Oil Company (Stanvac)
was established as a result of the merger between Socony Vacuum Oil Company of New York and
Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. In 1957, to meet the country’s increasing needs for fuel, Stanvac
constructed a refinery in Limay, Bataan. After the end of partnership between Socony Vacuum Oil and
Standard Oil Company in 1962, Esso Philippines was established. In the midst of first oil crisis in 1973,
Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) acquired Esso Philippines and renamed it Petrophil
Corporation. In 1988, Petrophil Corp. changed its name which gave birth to Petron Corporation. In 1990,
PNOC partnered with Saudi Aramco, world’s largest crude oil producer in preparation for the full
deregulation of the local oil industry. Through a stock purchase agreement in 1994, Saudi Aramco
gained 40% ownership of Petron. PNOC sold its 20% shares which was known to be the “Mother of all
IPOs” in the Philippines. Petron started the 21st century by entering into the petrochemical business in
able to diversify its operations. In 2009, Petron was put under the management of San Miguel
Corporation (SMC). In the same year, Petron initiated the micro-filling or bulilit station as part of its
retail network expansion program. Its Petron Blaze 100 was the highest recorded octane rating in fuels
technology history. By 2010, Reader’s Digest awarded Petron with the Gold Trusted Brand Award in the
Petrol Station category for the 10th consecutive year. In 2011, Petron Bataan Refinery marked its 50th
anniversary and launched the Expansion Project (RMP-2), the company’s biggest and most ambitious
project. Today, Petron is still committed to its vision to be the leading provider of total customer
solutions in the energy sector and its derivative businesses.
