The Restoration House
The Restoration House is a nonprofit organization that helps restore single mothers and their
children back to God’s good intent for their lives. Through supportive transitional housing, ally teams,
and family advocacy, The Restoration House walks alongside low-income single-mother families, helping
them break harmful cycles and regain hope and a future. At its core, The Restoration House believes
that God intended for us to live in a community. Further, God desires for all of humanity to be restored
in four key relationships—with God, self, others and creation. In support of this, TRH is building The
Village, a community in which single-mother families develop supportive relationships and find healing,
stability, and restoration as they build a brighter future (The Restoration House).
Life’s four key relationships: God — our relationship with God is the central relationship that
affects all others. Self — God desires for us to view ourselves as He does, as created by Him and in His
own image. Others — God desires for us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Creation — God desires for
us to act responsibly toward His creation; He calls us to be good stewards of all that He gives us (The
Restoration House).
Our values: Restoration —we value God’s desire for the complete restoration of all people.
Community — we value community, as demonstrated in God’s nature, life is less than what is could or
should be when life is lived alone. Reciprocity — we value reciprocity, because everyone should have
the chance to work for their future. Dignity — we value dignity, because being created in the image of
God all are deserving of dignity. Collaboration — we value partnership and cooperation over duplication
and competition (The Restoration House).
The Village
The Restoration House opened its doors in 2007 and has since then operated in multiple
housing sites spread over 11 miles. Although TRH has only had the capacity to work with 5 single-mother
families at a time, the dream for TRH has always been to serve many more single mothers and their
children in a community setting. With the expanded capacity (Phase 2 of TRH), The Village will have an
impact on 140-160 single mothers and 280-320 children over the next 10 years. The masterplan for The
Village include 24 housing units, a playground, community gardens, outdoor basketball court, office
space, conference room, reception area, walking trails and a community space with a computer lab,
playroom, teen room, training rooms, and multi-purpose room with instructional kitchen (The
Restoration House).
80% of households in Knoxville’s public housing are single-mother families, 35% of all Knox
County households with children are single parent families, 78% of these families with children under 5
live below the poverty line, The Restoration House receives nearly 40 calls per month from single
mothers seeking a better life for themselves and their children (The Restoration House).
Co-Founders
Daniel Watson and Mandy Watson are the co-founders of The Restoration House. They both
come from single-mother families and met in high school and became high school sweethearts. Because
of their experiences being raised as a single-mother family, that’s what prompted the vision of The
Restoration House. I spoke with Daniel Watson, via email, and had a great conversation with him. He
said that The Restoration House journeys with low-income single parents and their children in Knoxville,
TN and the surrounding counties. He also stated that all families that participate in The Restoration
House have a referral through a variety of local agencies and organizations, like crisis pregnancy
shelters, churches, adoption agencies, emergency and transitional shelters, and other organizations like
that. Mr. Watson stated that the need at TRH is so great and growing, that’s why they’re in the process
of expanding and increasing the capacity that they can take in.
He also said that TRH uses a 3-pronged model that is aimed to help the single-parent families
become self-reliant and to help them transition into the life God has for them.
1. Supportive Transitional Housing – TRH provides a transitional housing unit to each
of its single-parent families for an average of two years. Each parent focuses on
career development as she works toward self-reliance. Mothers are strongly
encouraged to be in school and/or working full-time within six months of entering
the program. Families pay 30% of their income toward rent and utilities to help
them begin the transition into market-rate housing.

2. Ally Teams – a team of 5-7 allies from local churches walk alongside each
participating family. The ally team provides emotional and spiritual support along
with practical guidance.
3. Family Advocacy – TRH’s Family Advocate assists with coordination and planning
related to a family’s vision for their future. A contract outlining the basic limitations
and expectations of the TRH program is signed by each participating single-parent
family. The Family Advocate develops an individualized service agreement with the
participating family which identifies goals and action steps for areas including
education, employment, financial literacy, life skills, personal growth, parenting,
child health, etc.
They, overall, try to provide the best type of accommodations for families in need. They try to
show the families kindness, try to teach them morals in life and try to get them on a better path, for
them and their families. They’re doing a beautiful job here at The Restoration House.
