Topic: Introducing Yourself Date:

Objectives: ​By the end of the lesson the students will know how to ask and answer “What’s your name?” (in a full
sentence) in English. They will be able to count to 10 and recite the English alphabet. They will also be able to ask
and answer the question “Where are you from?” They will be exposed to basic SVO sentence structure, pronouns,
and the verb ​to be.

Level: Low Beginning


Skill Area(s): Vocabulary, Grammar, Pronunciation

Warm-up Activity As students enter, say “hello” and shake their hands.
(​10 mins​) Hi, my name is _____ What is your name? Point to self, then to student.
Prompt them until they understand and respond with “My name is _____.”
Do this with all students.
Say “What’s your name?” again, prompting them to say the correct
response. Get them to ask each other/me this question a few times.

Vocabulary (alphabet) Next, put up alphabet. First, listen to whole alphabet (CD 1 TR 3)
(​15 mins​) Say each letter again, slower.
Show slides of letters individually, saying the letter first, then having them
repeat it. Do this 2x.
Do listening activity B (CD1 TR 4)
Do listening activity A on pg. 5 (CD1 TR5)
Then use scrabble letters and spell my name. Then have them spell their
own names, repeating the letters out loud.
Say the name of a letter, and have the students find the corresponding
symbol in the scrabble letters.

Vocabulary (numbers) Counting demonstration with books


(​15 mins)​ Then put up number signs (0-10)
“Quiz” with numbers on fingers

Grammar (pronouns) Transition to pronouns. Repeat the beginning activity, this time
(20 mins) emphasizing pronouns “MY, YOUR, HIS, etc.)
MY name is ______. What’s YOUR name?
Show pictures in appendix b, repeating the label.
Show them the pictures again, saying nothing, and ask them to repeat. Do
this a few times until they seem to have it down.
Have them turn to a partner, and take turns stating each others’ and other
classmates’ names.
Debrief/Summary Turn to a different partner (or, depending on class size, do this as a class)
(​5 mins)​ and repeat the alphabet, numbers, and practice introducing yourself.

Materials / Resources / Supplies English in Action​ textbook, CD, CD player, projector, ​Scrabble ​letters,
etc. numbers (printed out, cut out, laminated)
