10 REASONS WHY THE LEGAL

PROFESSION IS UNIQUE IN ITSELF

Today world is changing at a speed of light! We all have the desire to stand unique, to show the
world that we are no less than anyone. But, can we really able to achieve our dreams? Are we
fully satisfied with our jobs? What makes us to run like a racing horse? Why aren’t we happy?
Why we are not able to enjoy our life? In spite of our hard working, why are we not able to
achieve our goals? The answer to all these questions is that we follow the path which is told by
our elders and relatives. We never apply our brain in choosing the road which we have inbuilt
interest in it. So, the solution to the above asked questions is that we should take the road less
travelled by! And the career in legal field is one of those roads which are less travelled by. In this
article I’ll be explaining in brief the top 10 reasons which make the profession in legal field
unique. However, these are not exhaustive.

1. Too many career opportunities – Till 12th I had no idea about legal field. It was after
my entrance in the legal field by cracking CLAT that I came to know the vast scope in
the field of law. No matter whether it is medical or engineering, law is in every field. In
mathematical terms it can be said that every field is a subset of law. When we talk about
the field of medical science then law such as medical negligence comes into play which
comes under the law of torts. Similarly, if we talk about the business world then the laws
such as corporate law, federal equal employment opportunity laws, telemarketing sales
law, international laws and many more hundreds of similar laws. One can go for
practicing in litigation or in corporate field or in law firms.
2. High earning capacity – Legal profession is one of those professions where one can earn
a lot of money. If we take the example of Ram Jethmalani, he charges up to Rs. 25 lakhs
per hearing as his fees. Similarly, if one chooses to go for corporate job, then he can get
initial package of up to Rs. 16 lakhs. While working in a law firm or in corporate sector,
there may not be job satisfaction for many. But working in judiciary is having job
satisfaction almost for everyone. However, no matter where we are practicing or
working, we should be having the habit of making justice in good faith and conscience.
Judge should never be prejudiced.
3. Prestige – It is very sad to say that in movies lawyers are portrayed as liars. But in real
life being a lawyer is a great prestige for oneself. Legal professionals such as magistrates,
judges and chief justices earn a lot of prestige. They can play quite an active role for the
development of society. When comparing between a lawyer and a judge, lawyers are able
to earn and accumulate more wealth as compared to judges. But from the view of prestige
though both earn quite good name & fame but the post of judge is more prestigious.
4. Debating & convincing skill – As soon as one gets into law colleges or university, he
starts developing his debating skills right from their 1st year. There are hundreds of law
colleges in India which give opportunities to its students for debating and mooting which
is must for becoming a good lawyer. They also develop power to convince others.
5. Helping the needy – There is a Latin phrase ‘pro bono publico’ which literally means for
public good. This Latin maxim allows legal professionals to work voluntarily and without
any payment for the poor needy persons. This also makes as a kind of CSR (Corporate
Social Responsibility). Lawyers need to give free legal advice and also to serve poor free
of cost.
6. Diverse field to practice – Legal profession is not only the river rather it is the entire
ocean! Our legal system provides an ample of field to practice into. Ranging simply from
practicing in lower subordinate courts to chief justice of Supreme Court, one can get
many opportunities to serve the society. MC Chagla, first chief justice of Bombay High
Court in his famous autobiography Roses in December writes about his journey as how
he travelled from acting as a puisne judge to the post of Chief Justice of International
Court of Justice (this autobiography is being recommended from my side for every law
student).
7. Intellectual challenges – Legal professionals get ample of cases of diverse fields. They
have to be quick and proactive. They have the skill of doing research right from their
college life. In colleges & university, law student need to write research paper and also to
get published for making their CVs strong and ultimately getting an edge over others.
8. Work environment – The legal profession is changing continuously, bringing new
challenges and new opportunities every day. Henceforward, legal professionals are
problem solvers, innovators and able to take new responsibilities effectively. However,
practicing in law is a quite interesting field.
9. Flexibility – The legal field is very much flexible. Lawyers have freedom to set their own
working hours, to set their own fees, to approach the client in whom they are interested
and they can also take a day off if they wish to do so.
10. Learning throughout life – Legal profession is one of those professions where one
learns throughout one’s life. They need to be updated with day-to-day laws & statutes
along with national as well as international current events. This is the reason why we say
that lawyers practices in a court i.e., they need to learn throughout their life and hence
calling them as practicing.

There are many more reasons which make the legal profession unique in itself. However, due to
some limitations & restrictions I have mentioned only the top 10 reasons which make legal
profession unique in it.
