Painting is an object with a three-dimensional message. Bob Brendl

THIS CLASS PREPARES STUDENTS FOR THE SUBMISSION OF AN AP 3D PORTFOLIO. 3D SKILLS AND MASTERY ARE
FURTHER DEVELOPED THROUGH CLASS LESSONS AND INVESTIGATIONS. QUALITY WORKS FROM THE STUDENT’S
SKETCHBOOK OR FROM CLASS PROJECTS MAY BE USED AS PART OF THE AP 3D PORTFOLIO SUBMISSION.

Welcome to Art I 3D!
3D Studio Art I Class Review: Projects will reflect your use and knowledge of the Elements and
Principles of 3D Design as discussed for each lesson. The Elements and Principles are added
sequentially during the term. Do not think that you cannot use an element or principle we have already
studied as you develop your work. Smaller studies will be done in your sketchbook, as well as class
work related to techniques, and your project ideas. Writing and Research about art and artists will also
be placed in your sketchbook or art folder.
Course Description 0101330: Students explore how space, mass, balance, and form combine to create
art forms or functional products and structures. Student artists consider the relationship of scale
through the use of positive and negative space volume, visual weight, and gravity. Student artists use
an art criticism process to evaluate, explain, and measure artistic growth in personal or group works.

GRADING / RUBRIC
Students will discuss, and critique personal art and artists’ works using a variety of methods including
personal art making, verbal and written critiques, reading / researching about art, and using
technological and / or printed resources to investigate the visual arts.

General Criteria for Grading:
1. Personal and thoughtful preparation and planning
2. Evidence of imagination and innovation
3. Care in craftsmanship and execution
4. Project meets assignment goals
5. Mastery of art skills / techniques and appropriate use of art media
6. Serious, focused effort by student demonstrating personal vision
7. Self and class critiques
8. Sketchbook development of ideas and research for projects
9. Assignment is completed on time and turned in for teacher evaluation

Mini Rubric: Work Quality in Concept & Execution:
1. Poor 3. Moderate 5. Strong
2. Limited 4. Good 6. Excellent

Numerical Grade:
Excellent: 100 – 95 Good: 84 – 75 Limited: 64 – 60
Strong: 94 – 85 Moderate: 74 – 65 Poor: 59-0

Grading is based on a point system. Each assignment will have specific criteria, which the student must meet.
Project assignments are assigned points – 100 – 600 pts. Research / Inquiry / Sketchbook work is also
assigned points as related to each assignment. Sketchbook works may be graded as PROJECTS.

3D PROJECTS: Projects will address specific spatial problems as related to 3D ISSUES

FOCUS – 3D ISSUES: ENGAGEMENT with SPACE USING a range of design principles: Unity, Variety, Balance,
Emphasis Contrast Rhythm, Repetition, Proportion / Scale, Occupied/Unoccupied Space
Preliminary studies will be completed in the sketchbook or work kept in an art folder / portfolio. We will use
multiple online resources including an Art Facebook page and the Class Pinterest Boards:
http://pinterest.com/artzheart/, as well as class resource books, videos, and/or visuals / EXEMPLARS.

CLASS ART STUDIO: Others use the same space to work. PLEASE make sure to leave your work area clean at
the end of class. Take a last look before you leave class to make sure everything is in order and you have all

The Elements and Principles of 3D Design:
The elements and principles of design are the building blocks used to create a
work of art.

How we apply the principles of design determines how successful we are in
creating a work of art.

Elements of 3-D Design
1. Space: distance, area, volume; physical space independent of what occupies it; absolute
space.
2. Line: the edge or outline of a form, the meeting of planes; linear materials include: wire,
wood, metal rod, string or any materials with a long thin shape.
3. Plane: a flat or level surface –– planar materials include foam core, cardboard, sheet metal,
plastic sheets, and plywood.
4. Mass/ Volume: closed, independent, three dimensional form –– completely surrounded by
space –– volumetric materials include blocks of plaster, wood or stone. Sometimes mass refers
to a positive solid and volume refers to a negative, open space surrounded by material, as in a
bowl or other vessel.
5. Shape: positive and negative: positive shape is the totality of the mass lying between its
contours; in three-dimensional work, the visible shape or outer limit of a form changes as the
viewer's position is changed. These outer limits are seen as shapes moving back and forth
between major contours.
6. Negative space: is empty space defined by positive shape.
Sometimes referred to as occupied and unoccupied space.

3
ART I 3D COMPREHENSIVE SYLLABUS 2018 – 2019 / KEEP IN YOUR NOTEBOOK!

7. Value: light and shadows on the surface of forms; quantity of light actually reflected by an
object's surface; value changes might be affected by the addition of color to the surface of a
work.
8. Texture: the surface quality of a form –– rough, smooth, weathered and so on.
9. Color: in 3D design, the actual color of the material being used.

Principles of 3-D Design

1. Harmony: resolution of forces in opposition.
2. Contrast/ Variety: different qualities or characteristics in a form; interest generated in a
work by using a variety of shapes, forms, textures and so on.
3. Rhythm/ Repetition: rhythm is the result of repetition; three rhythmic devices include:
A. the duplication of the same form
B. two forms used alternately; and
C. the sequential change of a form (large to small, for example.)
4. Emphasis: something in the work must dominate. A high point or climax occurring in the
work, or the domination of a motif or design element.
5. Continuity: organized movement or rhythm (repetition, alteration and progression).
6. Balance: ordered relationship of parts whether symmetrical or asymmetrical; equilibrium.
· Symmetrical Balance: equal visual units right and left/ top to bottom of an imaginary center
point.
· Asymmetrical Balance: visual balance achieved by dissimilar visual units; for example, two or
three small shapes on the right balancing one larger shape on the left.
7. Proportion / Scale: elements compared, one to another, in terms of their properties of size,
quantity, and degree of emphasis.
