The new 3EK7 surge arrest-
er from Siemens offers
superior protection against
power surges for the
equipment in electrical
distribution systems with
operating voltages of up to
52 kV.
Besides being highly resistant
to environmental pollution of
all kinds, its performance in
dealing with earth faults and
its excellent short-circuit
ratings are setting entirely
new standards.
The silicone on the new 3EK7
surge arrester refuses to
allow any deposits of pollution
or films of moisture to form
on it. Thus surface currents
caused by pollution are
extremely low.
This arrester is also very
lightweight, robust and du-
rable – and offers outstanding
cost effectiveness.

Silicone:
Total safety
Together, the water-repellent
(hydrophobic) property of the
silicone and the elasticity of
the synthetic composite mate-
rial ensure that the 3EK7 surge
arrester enjoys an exceptio-
nally long service life, even
under the toughest climatic
conditions and in the harshest
industrial environment.
Moreover, it does not give off
any toxic substances, even in
the event of fire.
Silicone:
Exceptional resistance to
surface pollution
The silicone on the 3EK7
surge arrester prevents
moisture and pollution from
settling on its surface.
Because this water-repellent
property is also transferred to
contaminant layers, it is
impossible for a complete
layer of conductive moisture
to form on the surface. Even
the heavy saline fog that
occurs in coastal regions has
no adverse effect on the
excellent dielectric properties.
The end result is that no
surface currents can be
generated, and discharges
on the surface of the arrest-
er are minimal.
Stays leak-tight for years
The silicone enclosure
sprayed directly onto the
metal-oxide resistors of the
3EK7 surge arrester has a
number of significant
advantages. Unlike
conventional arresters with
synthetic enclosures that are
either push-fit or shrink-fit,
the construction of the 3EK7
means that there is no chance
of there being any holes or
cavities that moisture might
creep into – one of the most
common causes of failure in
medium-voltage surge
arresters. The 3EK7 remains
absolutely leak-tight and
completely insensitive to
moisture, no matter what the
weather.
Exceptional service life
High-quality materials and the
latest manufacturing
techniques ensure that the
3EK7 surge arrester has a
long service life. The excellent
mechanical strength of the
silicone sheath provides
optimum protection of the
3EK7 under all conditions –
during transport and
installation, and in service
against wind, weather and
wilful attempts to cause
damage. This means, of
course, that power supply
system outage times are kept
to an absolute minimum.
Safe overload
characteristics
The metal-oxide resistors of
the 3EK7 surge arrester are
surrounded by glass-rein-
forced plastic rods that en-
close them like a cage. In the
event of the resistors being
overloaded – an extremely
rare event but nevertheless
one that cannot be ruled out
entirely with any type of
arrester – it is impossible for
arcing to generate excessive
internal pressure because the
resistors are not enclosed in
a sealed mechanical shell. The
arc can escape through the
silicone sheath without ab-
ruptly ripping open the me-
chanical supporting structure
of the enclosure. At the same
time a large number of GRP
rods ensure that the metal-
oxide resistors remain in
place, reducing to an absolute
minimum the risk of any flying
fragments.

Technology
that is totally convincing
The 3EK7 surge arrester
offers truly sophisticated
technology that can take even
the hardest of knocks in
everyday service. It means,
of course, that it can handle
overloads extremely well,
should they ever occur, and
that there is almost no chance
at all of nearby equipment
suffering secondary damage
(due to flying splinters or
fragments).
Totally convincing design
The key design features of
the 3EK7 surge arrester are
the way in which the HTV
silicone (High Temperature
Vulcanizing) is vulcanized
directly onto the resistor units
and the way in which the
resistor stacks are clamped
solidly between the end
fittings by 8 GRP rods. The
end result of this type of
construction is absolute leak-
tightness and high mechanical
strength combined with the
ability to prevent any buildup
of excessive internal pressure
as a result of overloading.
In addition, compared with
other polymers, the HTV
silicone of the enclosure is
water-repellent and flame-
retardant, and has been used
with great success in all types
of power systems for over 20
years (including extra-high-
voltage networks).
Passed with flying colors:
All current standard tests
It would be difficult to provide
a more convincing demon-
stration of quality – the 3EK7
surge arrester passed all the
tests demanded by current
standards with flying colors.
So the whole range complies
with all the latest issues of
IEC 60099-1, 60099-4 and
ANSI/IEEE C62.11.

Comprehensive range of
accessories
The standard versions of the
3EK7 surge arrester come
preassembled with a nut and
washer on the M12 stud at
each end and with an
additional clamp at the high-
voltage end. This enables the
arrester to be installed in
existing plants in a variety of
ways without the need for
any additional parts.

With the aid of metal clips

from the range of accessories
it is also possible to mount
this arrester on NEMA or DIN
terminals. An insulated
mounting must be employed
for the arrester when a
disconnector is used. There
are suitable insulating clips
available for this purpose and
they are also suitable for
NEMA and DIN terminals.
