Assignment 1

1. My 1st state is obviosly Texas. It was and still is a very independent state. The state is very
rural and has many open lands. My 2nd state is Florida. Actually, Florida does not look like a
southern state at all. I have been to that state and it looks likes its in the middle of southern
and northern. Maybe its all the attraction to Disney Land. My 3rd state is Arkansas I have
drove through it there are a lot of open land and hills and mountains. It captures the
southern image well. My 4th state is Tennesse. You hear a lot about tennesse how its really
country and southern, but I cant really judge becaues ive never been there. My 5 th state is
South Carolina. Ive heard some history here about them threatining to separate because of
taxes. If you notice the hole south has threatened to separate but none of the north. My 6 th
state is Kentucky. Its name just rings south. Unfourtunetly I have never been there so I cant
say more. My 7th state is lousiana. I have been through lousiana and theres nothing really
special about it. Nothing really southern stands out. My 8th state is Georgia. Again nothing
really hits me about Georgia since ive never been there. My 9th state is Oklahoma. Its
actuallly filled with rolling plains and open rural areas. My 10 th state is Alabama. Never
been through it but I here its a lot like arkansas captures the southern image. By the way in
my perception the southern image is open plains, farms, grasslands, deserts, little houses
with no neighbors, and a lot of forests and woods.

2. The movie “The War” was set in Mississippi. The family is broke poor and has lost there
house. This movie covers so much about the south. It covers racism, prejiduce, and even
child abuse. I watched this movie in Mr. pearsons sociology class and we had to analyze it. I
analyzed that this movie captures the souths image as well as its social pattarns. The movie
is about two sibblings fighting through prejiduce and racism even though there white. I
think the south image used to be poor and hardworking and this movies I think is trying to
capture that.

3. The first negetive quality when I think of the south is our History. We have threatened
toseparate from the U.S. because we didn’t get our way. We wanted to have the black
slaves. The second negative quality is jobs. If your in your south there are a lot of jos that
deal with agriculture. If you want to be something else you have limited plans. The third
negative quality is our the norths views. If you go to the north people will probably notice
your accent and guess your from the south and judge you on it. People think your from the
south your not sophistacated you’ve never been away from the farm.

4. The first positive aspect of the south is that were very hardworking. We are in my
perception much more hardworking than the north. There view of hardworking is being in
an office all day. Our view is doing backbreaking work on the farm our taking care of
livestock. The second positive aspect is to me the animals. Sure the north have dogs and
cats. We have so many more. The third is our belief in god. Because of our past we have
so many churches and religions. So many of the people of the south belief in god.

5. Ive heard that W. J. Cash was a good southern writer. My mom told me about a book he
wrote “The Mind of the South.” She said it was a really good book cause it got the south
right. My next is Thomas Wolf. Im sad to say I havent read any southern books, but ive
heard of a lot. His book is look homeword, angel. It sounds like a good book. It’s about
someone whos coming of age and college and he lives in North Carolina. My final is Walker
Percy. He wrote the moviegoer. Its about a stock broker and the decline in southern
traditions.

Assignment 1
ESSAY OVER PERCEPTION

My perception of the south is positive. I love living in it and everything about it. All of
us are hardworking individuals who believe in christ and God. Even know the north look down
on us because were different and don’t use as much technology and don’t build as much big
citys and our past scars us were still all Americans. The south provides most of our nations
agriculture. Which means most of the livestock and farming products come form the southern
states.

In our past the southern states have made mistakes like the civil war were we
threatened to separate from the union. The slaves were also one of the big mistakes of the
south. After the north banned slavery the south still wanted to have them which is a big
mistake.

My perception of the southern states to me is very exact rolling plains, open areas,
beautiful mountains, and god loving hardworking people. Our past may make people judge us
very differently from the north. If you were to just hear about the south and the north you
would want to go and live and the north, but you actually have to go there for you perception
to change. Ive never been out of the south in my life and I don’t think I ever want to.
