Bahasa Inggris: Tak Kenal Maka Tak Sayang
“You can never understand one language until you understand at least two”
Geoffrey Willans
English.
Sampai sekarang, bahasa Inggris
Amerika masih mewariskan peninggalan reformasi bahasa peninggalan Webster. Meskipun
bahasa Inggris Amerika telah berevolusi dan memiliki aksen tersendiri, makna setiap kata dan
aturan tata bahasa yang digunakan masih tetap sama dengan bahasa Inggris yang digunakan di
Jika Anda ingin berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan aksen British. Cobalah beberapa tips
berikut:
1. Mulai dengan R
Tidak semua aksen british adalah sama. Meskipun demikian, kebanyakan penutur
british aksen menyamarkan pengucapan huruf R setelah huruf hidup. Pada kata hurry
Contoh lain misalnya kata girl.
Jadi kata stupid bukan diucapkan stooped tapi stewpid
3. Huruf A
Huruf A pada kata bath, path, glass, dan grass benar-benar diucapkan dengan vokal
yang jelas, bukan disamarkan menjadi e seperti menjadi beth, peth, gless, atau gress.

British English and American English
If you ask someone in the UK where you can buy ‘chips’ from,
they’ll probably send you to a local chippy
(fish and chips shop) or to MacDonald’s.
However, if you ask someone in America
the same question, they will probably tell
you to go to a supermarket, thinking you
want this ->

colour color

Grammar – There are many grammatical differences between
American and British English. For example, if someone asks if you
are hungry but you have just finished your lunch, in British
English you would need to use the present perfect tense, “No,
I’ve eaten already”, but in American English you can use the past
tense, “No, I ate already” (this would be incorrect in British
English).
autumn fall
garden yard
holiday vacation
lift elevator
nappy diaper
pavement sidewalk
queue line
sweets candy
torch flashlight

As you can see, there are many differences between American
English and British English but don’t worry about it too much.
Most Americans and Britons know many of the differences so
you shouldn’t find yourself in too much trouble when you go on
holiday! The most important thing to remember is try to be
consistent (especially when you are writing English) – decide
which type of English you are going to use and stick with it.
Look at these pairs of words below. From the meaning or spelling, can
you guess if they are British English or American English?
1. Aeroplane – airplane

4. Drugstore – chemist

In a simpler world, English would be written the same way everywhere. However, when Noah
Webster created an American English dictionary in the early 1800s, he did more than just add
new words to British English: he also revised the spelling of many common words to eliminate
what he saw as unnecessary letters. His new spellings were adopted in the United States but
not the UK, and these spelling differences remain to this day.
The list below is intended to provide an overview of the most common spelling differences
between American and British English. The words beginning each list are intended to establish
overall patterns, whereas the words in italics toward the end of the lists are examples of
deviations from the rule. If you have questions about any other terms that aren’t on this list,
