EEL209 POWER ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND CIRCUITS

GTO,IGBT,MOSFET and RECTIFIERS


1. An IGBT Chopper modulated power from a 200 V DC supply to a resistive load of 20Ω. The
switching frequency of the chopper is 1 kHz for VDS (Sat) =1.9V Calculate (a) IGBT Current rating for a duty
cycle of 0.8 (b) Average power loss during conduction (9.9A, ID avg =7.92 A, 15W)

2. A Chopper is operated by an IGBT with a supply voltage of 480V and a Rload =4.8Ω. The average power
output at the load is to be 30 kW. Frequency of chopper is 1 kHz. Determine the on time of the chopper
and rating of IGBT. (rating of IGBT 600V and 100A)

3. A MOSFET is modulating the power in a chopper circuit whose input is 150V and Rload =7.3Ω. The ID vs
VDS characteristics are as follows (VGS(TH)=1 V):

4.A Chopper circuit uses a power MOSFET to modulate power from a DC supply of 150 V to Rload of 7Ω.
The data sheet of this 250 V 30 A MOSFET gives information that for a gate drive voltage VG of 10 V, the
turn-on time of the device comprises of a delay time of 30 nsec and a current rise time of 150 ns. The
total allowable power dissipation in the device is 100W. RDSOn =0.12Ω. Determine (a) VGS(TH) (b) Energy
loss during turn-on (c) Energy loss during device conduction interval assuming the Fswitching of chopper =
30 kHz and duty ratio of 0.8. (VGSTH < 7.47V, 79 microJ, )

5. A 1000 V 25A GTO controls power from a DC supply of 600 V to a Rload of 30Ω. The data sheet gives
the following information
VGTOOn = 2.2 V ; Average gate power should not exceed 10 W; IG Turn-on =0.5 A; IG Turn-off=-25A
Determine Device power gain,device turn-on current gain, device turn-off current gain, maximum average
power loss in GTo and the efficiency. (1191, 39.9, 0.8,43.8W, 99.6%)

6. A single phase full wave bridge rectifier is required to supply an average voltage of Vdc=400V to
a resistive load of R=10Ω. Determine the voltage and current ratings of the diode and transformer.
[Ans: Diode Id =20A, Ipeak=62.8A, IRMS=44.28A; Transformer Is=44.3A, VA rating=19.7kVA,TUF=0.8105]

7. A single phase half wave rectifier has a battery voltage of E=20V and its capacity is 200Whr. The
average charging current should be 10A. The primary input voltage is 120V, 60Hz and the transformer
ratio is 2:1. Calculate a)the conduction angle δ of the diode b)the current limiting resistance R c)the
power rating of the resistance R d)the charging time in hours e) the rectifier efficiency f) peak inverse
voltage of the diode. [Ans: δ =152.730, 1.8 Ω, 489.8W, 1hr, 29%, 104.85V]

8. The diodes in the single phase full wave rectifier have a reverse recovery time of 50µs and the
rms input voltage of 120V. Determine the effect of the reverse recovery time on the average output
voltage if the supply frequency is 2 KHz and 60 Hz. [Ans:10.3V, 8.9mV]

9. A single phase fully controlled bridge circuit is used to obtain the regulated dc output voltage. The
rms value of the ac input voltage is 230V and the firing angle at 60º, so that the load current is 4A.
a) calculate the dc output voltage ,P &Q b)calculate the same as in (i)if a freewheeling diode is used at
the output. The firing angle is maintained at 600. c) if SCR3 is damaged and gets open circuited.
Calculated the average dc voltage and the load current. [Ans: a)103.5V, 414W, 717Var b) 932W,
