A SUPERFICIAL SURVEY OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES NEAR LA OROYA, PERU Por J. ROBERT SLLS For more than eleven years the writer has been impressed by the wealth of untouched archaeological material to be found in the re- gion of central Peru surrounding the smelter town of La Oroya in the department of Junin. A somewhat extensive search of the lite ture during this time has failed to reveal any thorough, study of the remains in this region, In his excellent “Ancient Civilizations of the Andes”, Philip Ainsworth Means refers to these parts only in that he publishes a photograph of certain stone structures near Pachacayo which he distinguishes, with some hesitation, as “pre-Tnean”, Some aliment is given to the -writer's* contention ithat these remains are worthy of study by the appearance in a recent number ‘(first semes- ter 1939) of the Revista del Museo Nacional, Lima, of an interesting account by Gladys A. Nomland of a site at San Blas, Junin, where he represented culture seems connected with that indicated at several localities near La Oroya. he extreme difficulty of ageess to the ruins and burial sites in this area has evidently been a large factor in keeping them obs- care, while their unspectacular character has certainly aided in pre- venting their exploration, It is the writer’s wish that the present communication be accepted, not as an exhaustive report upon the remains in this region, but, rather, 43 a preliminary survey of them to the end that they be brought to the attention of the gentloinen of the present Congress, The ‘writer has been saddened during many years by the evidences he has observed 6 the ravages of “vandals” and "pot hunters” among these irrepla- eeable relies of ancient cultuéts, It is hoped that these observations may sufficiontly interest the members of the Congress to cause steps to be taken to bring about a change in the condition of neglect which is Allowing to be destroyed the priceless things here which must have their significant relation to the whole of Peruvian prehistory. From these preliminary considerations, let us past to a general F Mscviption of the sites and remains under diseussion, Tt is thought ‘Well to confine the present article to such sites as have been visited or observed by the writer.
