Outline for Lesson Plan


Short Story Lesson Plan – 1 Hour
You will read a story called: Cat in the Rain by Ernest Hemmingway
Learning objectives: to enable students

I. Pre-reading:
Activity 1: (Objective: to activate schema and/or create interest in the story.)
Time: 5 minutes
Materials:
Procedures: (in details)
 Ss find a partner who s/he has not spoken to, and ask the following questions:
o Have you ever rescued an animal from the streets?
o Have someone give an animal?
o Have you ever met someone in a nontypical situation?
o Have you ever fell in love with an older person?
o How did you feel?

Activity 2: (Objective: to provide language and/or grammar activity arising out of the
story.)
Time: 5 minutes
Materials:
Procedures: (in details)
 Ss identify 5 sentences that express desires for someone or something and another 5
sentences that express decisions. Ss must not repeat words more than twice.

e.g. The wife liked him. e.g. I’m going down and get that kitty.
She liked the deadly serious way he I’ll do it

Oh, I wanted it so much. I wanted a kitty. No, I’ll get it

II. While-reading:
Activity 1: (Objective: to promote general understanding of the story)
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: slips of paper with key words related to the story, a poster board.
Procedures: (in details)
 Ss cut a poster board and form a big arrow. They order the following passages of the
story starting from the square part of the arrow to the pointed one:
o They are in an Italian hotel.
o The wife sees a cat
o She goes down and try to get the kitty
o The husband is reading
o The wife talks with the patrone (hotel keeper)
o The wife likes the hotel keeper.
o The wife goes out from the hotel
o The wife looks for the cat
o The maid approach her outside
o The maid and wife start speaking
o They go in the hotel
o The wife sees again the hotel keeper.
o The husband asks for the cat
o The wife speaks about her appearance
o Someone knocks the door
o The maid gives the wife a tortoiseshell cat.
