LECTURE: 1

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION - I
-Sruthi
Masonry construction is one of the oldest types of
construction.
Advantages Drawbacks
• Durable • Comparatively great
and resistant to fire weight
• Local raw materials may • High thermal conductivity
be used • Requires expenditures of
• Extensive use in manual labor
modern construction • Cost of construction(foundati
ons and walls) is 15–
30 percent of the total cost of
a building
In contemporary construction, masonry construction
(mainly brick and stone walls and foundations)-
one of the widespread types of structural elements.

BRICK MASONRY
Systematic arrangement of laying bricks and bonding
them with mortar.
• Foundations Traditional brick:
• Walls • L- 21 to 25 cm Traditional
• Columns • W- 10 to 13 cm brick

• Buttresses • H- 7.5 cm
• Retaining structures  Normal size-
Brick
• Copings 23x11.4x7.6 cm
• Arches Modular brick:
• Floors, etc.  Normal size-
Modular
20x10x10 cm brick
 Actual size-
19x9x9 cm

Portion made by cutting
brick across their width.
• Three quarter bat
• Half bat
• Quarter bat
Closers-
Portion made by cutting
across their length
• Queen closer
• King closer
• Bevelled closer
Quoins-
External corner of walls
Bonds in brick masonry
Bonding- Process of arranging bricks with mortar.
Objectives of bonds:
• To break the continuity of the vertical joints in the
successive courses
• To ensure longitudinal and lateral strength of the
structure
• To provide pleasing appearance
Characteristics of brick bond:
• Uniform shape and size
brick
• Use if brick bats should be
discouraged
Classification of Bonds in brick masonry
• Stretcher bond
• Header bond
• English bond
o Double Flemish bond
• Flemish bond-
o Single Flemish bond
• Garden wall bond- o English garden wall bond
o Flemish garden wall bond
• Facing bond
• Dutch bond
• Raking bond- o Herring bond
o Diagonal bond
• Zig-zag bond
• English cross bond
• Brick on edge bond or soldier course
• Bonds in columns
• Bonds at junctions and squint junctions
Stretcher bond:

• Running bond
• Simplest bond; Used for walls having 9cm thickness
• Not suitable as a stand alone structural wall
• Used as a facade for the main structural building
• Often used in garden walls
Header bond:

• Heading bond
• Used for walls having one brick thickness
• Not preferable to use this for load bearing walls.
• Used as a facade for the main structural building
• Used for curved surfaces and also for foundations
