A Brave New World

By James M. Sutton

The book a Brave New World was written by a person by the name of Huxley. This story is the direct
antithesis of what George Orwell predicted was going to happen in the future. To understand the story
and what the intentions of the author are one has only to look at the title and understand what is meant
by the title. For one, Huxley chose to describe this ‘New World’ of his imagination as being ‘brave.’
Now, what can be gathered from his choice of description here? The term brave is commonly used in
the English language bearing a positive connotation meaning courageous, e.g. Saleh was very brave
when standing up to the oppressor, and it bears a negative connotation similar to the meaning of bold,
e.g. He made a very brave statement during the meeting. Huxley of course has chosen to side with the
meaning of ‘bold’ more than the meaning of ‘courageous.’ If the title of A Brave New World were to
bear the meaning of courageous that would be a very positive quality expressing that this new society
has taken a stance to eliminate the evils of society and bring about justice. It would mean that this
society would stand up and face all adverse conditions that stand in its path during its propagation of
truth and justice. However, if the meaning of the title were to carry these grand traits with it, it would
fall in the category of Utopian novels and not Dystopian novels; therefore, we must understand from the
onset that we are going to partake on a journey into man’s boldness and arrogance against the Lord of
the Worlds and His creation.

Now that the title is clear for all to understand, we must now look at the time period the writer came
from to understand more of why he chose the predictions that he chose.
