Hwa Chong Astronomy Club has achieved stellar results at the AstroChallenge 2018. Organized by NUS Remembering Hwa Chong (Formerly The Chinese
and NTU, AstroChallenge is the largest astronomy-based competition in Singapore. High School) Alumnus Mr Jek Yeun Thong

The Astronomy Club has clinched the overall champion trophy for the senior category against stiff
competition from JCs and polytechnics across Singapore, the first time in the club’s history. The competition HCI Students Conferred Top Award at Intel ISEF
involves MCQ papers, Data Response questions, observation rounds and a final round structured along a 24 May 2018
game show format.
An Evening of Drama - The 37th Year On Stage
Furthermore, the club has also won the best observation award in the competition, maintaining its Pursuing Our Dreams
performance from last year. The observation competition involves practical handling of the telescopes, as

well as theory papers.

This year’s competition was particularly significant due to the perseverance and resilience displayed by the
Hwa Chong Students: putting up a tough fight against participating schools which previously dominated this
competition.

The Astronomy Club would like to thank teachers in-charge Dr Tan Mei Leng, Senior Consultant/Corporate
Services and Mr Ren Xiaohui, and our seniors for helping us in the preparation of the competition.

Dr Leek Meng Lee, Lecturer from the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, NTU presents the
trophies to the winning teams.

The team winning the championship trophy includes: (from left) Mao Ziming (17S7B), Fong Ken Rui
(17S60), Yang Yuchen (18S6G) and Jeanne Ouyang Jian Jun (17S6G)
The observation round team includes: (from left) Wang Ming Chuan (17S6C), Mao Ziming (17S7B), Fong
Ken Rui (17S60), Luo Yehao Benjamin (18S7D) and Tham Kai Wen (17S60).
